Finally a replacement for my beloved 957's. Simple & tough!
I have been wearing Red Wing 957 boots for over 35 years. The model was discontinued for some reason. I suspect that it just didn't have enough bells & whistles for the target market. Actually, the 957 had absolutely NO bells or whistles. That's one of the main reasons I love them. They are just plain work boots, incredibly tough and a pair usually lasted me around 8-10 years and fit like a glove. I received a pair of Red Wing Gentleman Travelers in Black Cherry. I put them on for the first time this morning at 6 am and it's now noon and they already feel great. They are very close to the 957's in appearance, except that they are 6 in. rather 8 in. boots. I love them and I'm going to buy another couple of pairs just like them before Red Wing realizes that they have produced another model of perfect boots and discontinues them.

Workmanship of quality -
The leather boots, from Red Wing, are exceptional. The workmanship of certainty; elevated to a refined art is evident in these boots. An attitude of sturdy independence and solemn purpose were obviously appreciated by the designer/maker during their creative hour.

Well worth it!
I purchased a pair of these overseas as Zappos didn't have my size/color choice at the time. I've been wearing them all week - they are quite stiff in the beginning - both in the sole and the uppers, but they're wearing in well and molding to my feet. I suggest wearing them off/on until they're broken in. They do run about 1/2 size too big if you have normal/wide feet. You might go down another 1/2 size if you have narrow width feet. For me, I normally wear a size 9 M dress shoe and the 8.5 size works well for me.
The leather is OUTSTANDING! It is Horween leather and is the most amazing shade of deep, rich red. Although I was hesitant to order this color, I am glad I did - the red is not so much the main color, but as an accent to the overall dark color/black. Simply beautiful and adds a nice dimension to the color. The sole is great - not too thick and easily resoleable if needed. I highly, highly recommend these - put up with the break-in and you'll have a great set of lifetime boots.

Great Boots -
These boots are just what I wanted - something that's tough enough to endure the winter elements while still looking very cool. Give it awhile to break in but once they do it's well worth it.
Size down about 1/2 size if you have medium width feet. If your width is narrow then maybe even size down a full size. I have wide feet (EE) so my true size worked out great but they are a tad bit too long.

Red Wing "Beckman Boots"
First pair of Red Wing boots I've owned...and I must say they're exceptional quality and ooze class and retro style!...They look like they could be hand made by some old master cobbler of yester year, and don't resemble the mass produced offerings from the likes of Timberland etc.
If you're going to buy one pair of expensive boots in your lifetime then these Red Wing "gentleman traveler" are a must have!...

Amazing!
Fantastic boots. Very stiff when brand new, after a week or two of painful wear around the ankles, they softened up and molded to become one of my most comfortable shoes. The black cherry leather is an amazing shade. Everything about the GT is topnotch, from construction to leather used. Price is on higher side but completely worth it at full retail. No buyers regret at all. Sizing does run about ½ size large so best to size down ½ from your normal dress shoe size.

Worth every penny.
The biggest drawback to these boots is the price, but these boots are worth it. The construction is top notch, and done in the US. These boots will last literally a lifetime with proper care and an occasional resole. The Horween leather is perhaps the best available for a combination of looks and utility. It will be as durable as any work boot but still look great with a good shine.
Keep in mind if you are considering these that they may not be what you are used to. They do not have a cushioned insole, and they will be very stiff and quite uncomfortable for the first week or so. After that, however, they will mold to fit your feet perfectly and be the most comfortable pair of boots you could own.
These boots do run long, so order at least a half size down from your normal size. A tight fit is best since the leather will stretch a little, especially in width.

This is a very well made boot that promises to last as long as I'm willing to keep getting it resoled. Most issues are covered in existing comments. These boots do take awhile to become comfortable. I wear an 11 in Red Wing composite toe safety boots and probably should have exchanged these for a 10 1/2 as they are a touch large. The foot bed is quite narrow at first and was uncomfortable until the leather in the sides softened and started to conform to my feet. The tongue is attached up the full height of the boot, leading to some uncomfortable bulges when laced. This was solved by cutting the tongue partially free so the leather doesn't have to fold back on itself, eliminating the bulge where your ankle flexes. Boots are lightweight and waterproof enough for a splash through the puddles and more. Sole comes with nearly zero padding; got some cheap drug store type insoles and they seem to be working well enough for now. My boots are two weeks into being broken in and they've improved considerably as far as comfort. They still aren't the easiest things to get on though; you have to loosen the laces a lot to get your foot in.

Short review:\r\n-Not really D width more like C but will stretch to fit D and in my case EE. Why was this popular boot not offered in Wide?\r\n-Order only half a size down if you have wide feet\r\n-Boots insole is not ideal after stretching to an EE foot gaps appear between the boot sides and the insole that cause discomfort. Correctable with some thin leather insoles or custom leather ones.\r\n-Not usable with a Superfeet insole, its already a very low volume boot.\r\n-Great laces.\r\n-Good polishable leather, be careful with the white stitches.\r\n-Moderately arched built in leather insole.\r\n-The shank although steel is only a very narry flimsy half shank. There is a lot of sole flex.\r\n-Heavy duty as casual shoes go, but not tough enough for extreme conditions.\r\n-Rubber commando sole and neoprene heel are long lasting, but marking.\r\n\r\nLong review:\r\nI am measured 11.5 EE on a Brannock Device, in the morning. However after a long days walk, work, being on a plane etc. My feet swell larger to maybe 12 and maybe even a little bit wider. I ordered 10.5, a full size down. This turns out to be a mistake for me as I hadn\'t realized that these shoes lose some length as the leather flexes and the sole curves a tiny bit in addition to the whole magical foot growth. These boots a year later are now a little too short. ORDER HALF A SIZE DOWN is my recommendation for wide footers. Another thing to note of these boots is that their shank is only a flimsy tiny half shank. I can take the boot in my hands and flex the sole easily. They do not provide a lot of stiff support you will need if you expect to walk over rough terrain. After doing an over night on the Appalachian Trail in these my arches and toes cried out because they were not supported by the flimsy shank. I can\'t speak for construction work, but if they cannot stand up to packing alot of weight in mild back country conditions I doubt they would do well in the construction yard.\r\n\r\n

Check out Alden 405 they offer more sizing options and are better constructed.

Just what I wanted. I have been needing to temporarily replace my White's semi-dress boot to get a rebuild and bought a pair of these. I'm two days in and they are just starting to break in, which is a good thing. I intend on needing a resole and new heel within a year or so, but that investment will be well worth it on these boots.

Nice boots for working gentleman -
These boots fit well and were pretty comfortable out of the box. They run a little narrow. They are attractive boots made the old fashioned way, with sewn on full leather built-up soles. They'd be nicer with a liner. Great for a well-dressed man who needs a boot to wear to worksites or in other hazardous conditions.

Like love: wonderful with a little pain -
I love, love the look and finish of these shoes, but they are a bit painful to break in. The inside seam of the tongue dug into my ankle bone, but it's getting better… but for look, durability, and high quality, it's hard to beat.

Really nice boot. However, I did return them. One of the boots had a really annoying loud "pop" when walking originating somewhere in the forefoot. Not only could you feel it, but it was quite loud; didn't want to risk this being something that would not go away after a while after spending so much money on this boot. Only wore in the house on carpet; however, did seem like they were going to put me through some serious torture getting worn in, but everyone says they are great once they reach that worn in state. As for the fit, they really seemed to run relatively true to size for me; however, 1/2 size down would perhaps have fit better. Going to keep my eye on them to see if the price drops, at which time I just may give them another try. Zappos rules, brotha.

Fantastic, too heavy, difficult to size...
I love this boot. It is obviously built to last and it looks great. That said, it's just not the best match for my foot. My normal size is 10, but the Gentleman Traveler 10 was quite large - lots of heel slipping with every step and an almost clown-shoe like appearance with my chicken legs. So I exchanged it for a 9. (There was no 9.5, unfortunately.) The 9 was near impossible to even slip onto my foot, and while there's just enough room for my toes, it really binds the rest of my foot. The leather is very strong and I'm unsure about just how effective a stretching attempt would be. I can get the boot on without too much grunting and grimacing if I use a shoe horn, but is it really worth it? Again, fantastic boot, but be prepared to have some sizing issues and a possibly painful break-in period.
