Once I get them on they fit well and are comfortable, but I need a shoehorn to do it - maybe due to a slightly high arch. Some people say size down but I take my regular size (10) in most but not all Frye. I took a 10 in these.

I love these boots. They are surprisingly feminine looking, and can really be worn with anything. I had originally intended to purchase the Frye Veronica engineer boot, but after comparing both styles in the store it was clear that the 12r's are much better quality. These boots are made in the USA, they have a thick heavy duty sole (but they are surprisingly light), and the leather is dyed all the way through which is not the case with the Veronica boots. I fully expect these boots to last at least a decade if not longer. Just a heads up, as with all sturdy leather boots these ones do need to be broken in. If you rub some leather conditioner on them, it will make things a lot easier. Don't worry though because once that whole process is over they are very comfortable. In short these boots are definitely worth the price, especially when you consider that you'll probably have them for the rest of your life.

True Frye quality. The leather is soft, and supple around the leg and the two-tone effect is subtle and lovely. Haven't taken them off since they arrived except to sleep.

I have a tricky size, 10.5 which normally is not made by most shoe companies. Therefore, I wear size 11. In this shoe it was quite big, so I got back onto Zappos to order the next size down which was out of stock, sad. But I went for it and tried the 9.5 (a whole size smaller than my feet measure) & it works! This boot takes a small (& I mean small amount) of effort to pull on with my medium width feet and athletic calves. It feels like they'll stretch just perfect to fit my foot like a glove! The quality of the leather and make of the boot are noticeable!

Frye does it again! I am in love with these boots. I have been wanting a knock around pair of black or gray boots for a few years. I had debated on this style for a while. I finally took the plunge, and I am so glad I did!! What sold me on this pair was the fact that it was both black and gray. In person these are super cool looking. The distressing is just the right amount. The quality is impeccable. Super sturdy and well made. I am a true 7.5, which I ordered, and these are a tad snug but I'm not exchanging. I would not say they are too small, just need to be broken in a bit. Interesting as the Frye Harness 12R (which I might add is also amazing) are loose in 7.5. I did think the shaft height might be odd but it doesn't bother me. I'm 5'2 and this hits right below my calf muscle. This is my third pair of Fryes and I'm not stopping here. I have another pair (the Wyatt short) on order now. I can't get enough of Frye boots! All in all a winner. I can't wait to wear these!

I was thinking to get engineer12 or veronica shortie and after reading reviews I decided to get the engineer12 and I'm glad I did! They are much better in person then on photo! I had a little difficult to put them on but when I did they were so comfortable and very stylish! I'm very pleased with my new boots! I'm size 9 or 9.5 some times 10 and I got those 9.5 and they are perfect! Have some room but not too much, I have a high arch and was worry that they gonna be tight on but for my surprise boots fit great! I love my engineer12r, if you are thinking to get them or not do it!

Great boot. Finally settled on this one after having to send back 3 other pairs of Frye boots. The charcoal old town color is a nice gray with almost a greenish tint to it. Works well with all colors. I am a standard size 6, and the 6 fits really well in this style. I agree with another reviewer that there is a slight ridge at the arch of the footbed (between the extra leather in the heel and the mid-part of the footbed). This kind of bugged me since I am quite flat-footed, but I added a thin insert and find the boots quite comfortable now. Walked all over NYC in them without problems.

This was my first purchase with Zappos, and I have been looking for Frye boots on sale for MONTHS!! These were such a great price and super adorable. They fit perfectly and hit a good spot on my leg (I am a size ten shoe and 5'9). I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for a great shorter boot. I originally looked at the 8R but these 12R's were cheaper and a little taller so I went with these. I am so happy I did because they are still pretty short and the 8R would have been sitting on my ankle. Zappos is so helpful and such a great site A+!!

First pair of Frye's and will be with me a lifetime! Best boots ever. First time wearing them I had to be on my feet for 6 hours and I was totally comfortable. Incredible craftsmanship and worth the cost.

I love these! I am 7.5W comfortably and 7.5m/b with some effort to break in. I got these in 7.5 and they fit perfectly. Some reviewers said that it was hard to get their feet into these boot, so I anticipated that I would have a major problem to wear these boots; I have wide feet with very high arch. Usually I break out sweats when I try on pull on boots; I have Frye Carmen harness that most people say it's easy to put on, but I have been working on to stretch them still. Anywho, with these, I had a very little issue. I did though use plastic bags to slide my feet better, but only needed minor effort to do so. They were so comfortable right away. Oh, I love these so much. So chic and you can play around with these to create different looks, too. Love it!

I bought these boots in January 2013, and wore them at least three days/week until summer. I just got back from a long vacation (September 2013) and these were one of the two pairs of footwear I brought with me. They're so comfortable! I wore them nearly every day, walking in cities, hiking in the country, running through train and metro stations - they're just the best. I usually wear 8 1/2 in Frye, and that's what I ordered, and they're a perfect fit. The arch support was good (and I have nearly flat feet), and they're roomy enough to wear with good wool socks, but my feet run on the narrower side of medium, without being a true "narrow."

Love these boots! Like one of the other reviewers mentioned, I too struggled with what color? I couldn't decide between the Gaucho or Smoke. I ordered the Smoke but returned for the Gaucho. The smoke looks already lived in and the Gaucho is a clean brown leather. These are very substantial. I ordered a half size up and the fit is perfect! Since receiving these I have ordered two more pairs of Frye Engineers in the 8" shaft. They are even more comfortable than these! I do think I'll purchase the Sand color in these because now I have no light brown boots!

These are great. They fit really well right out of the box and felt wonderful. The smoke color is like a dirty brown, but really cool somehow. I have super wide feet and had no trouble getting them on. As soon as I put them on my feet I fell it love. Felt like Christmas morning. Nothing like a pair of Fryes.
One thing - watch the buckles when you use them. They have a little bit of oil on them.

I'm writing the same review for this Frye 12R that I did for the 8R since they are virtually the same boot, just a higher shaft. I have both the 8R and 12R Frye Engineer boots but in different leathers. I much prefer these brush off leathers because of the way they break in and mold to my feet. Once on, they feel like butter. Super soft and flexible. I have VERY difficult feet to find shoes for, however, these Frye Engineers, are the most comfortable shoes I own. I highly recommend them. Also, order your normal size if you want them to fit properly! You are supposed to have wiggle room in the length and toe area. Zappos is the best. They are so friendly and helpful, as well as patient while I order and return, order and return.

I love these boots. They fit snugly so heel slippage is minimized. Initially there were a bit stiff on top of the foot, but that's subsided after wearing them. I also bout the 8Rs but find I like the taller height better, it helps keeps the cuff of my jeans from getting all buggered up when I sit down. I ordered my usual size and had no problems breaking them in. I have a very high arch and these boots do a pretty good job with support. Sturdy enough to last a long time.

I am a Frye addict. I know it. I accept it. I love this boot. I have the 8R and the 12R and I much prefer the 12 R. I first got the 8R in my regular size. Tough to get on and off but perfect while you are wearing them. Except for the very ends of my toes after a few hours. So for the 12R I ordered a 1/2 size bigger. Oh so perfect. And the slightly higher shaft? Cute as can be. Love them. Wish I had ordered 1/2 size bigger on the 8R.

I love these boots! Fit perfectly the instant I put them on. Now I see why the Frye label has withstood the test of time. Smoke color is awesome (grayish brown worn leather effect). I would definitely recommend.

Just got them in the mail and they are beautiful. I can fit them on fine without socks but with socks will take some breaking in. Smoke is much lighter than I though it would be but I know they will darken with wear. Overall I love them. I say they are true to size. I ordered a pair of Frye ankle cowboy boots a while ago in a half size larger and now after I've worn them in I feel like they are huge on me. I'd stick to usual shoe size! Got them in probably about three days after purchase. Good ol' Zappos!

I was coveting a pair of the plum colored Engineers - my fall/winter wardrobe is primarily grey, brown, black and burgundy, so the plum was a natural choice. The next decision was which ones to get, the 8r or 12r? I used to have a pair of the 8r in black, and while they looked great, they required a lot of break-in to get comfy, and I didn't think the shorter shaft height looked great on my leg. So I decided to try the 12r, knowing if they weren't for me I could exchange them. Zappos was their crazy awesome selves and got my boots here the next morning, I happily cracked open the box, and inhaled the wonderful leather smell. The color is gorgeous, it's a rich plum color with lighter burgundy on the toe caps and heels. The buckles are sleek, bright silver. The leather is really supple and smooth, which surprised me because my 8r Engineers had such heavy leather they felt like they were coated in rubber. These were not at all like that, they seemed softer right off the bat. Though while the texture/feel of the leather was different, I can tell they'll still last forever with proper conditioning and care. After admiring them, it was time to try them on! I normally wear my boots with comfy socks and skinny pants/jeans or tights and dresses/skirts. I had on skinnies and a pair of wool boot socks, so I began the try-on. I have to admit I was nervous, because the break-in with the 8r pair was really rough. I was afraid I was going to have to do a lot of wrangling to get my feet in these! But to my surprise, my feet slid in so easily, and I just had to adjust the top buckle a bit to accommodate my jeans. (I have thin to medium calves.) I was so happy! I walked the length of my room in them a few times, and my feet were comfy! I have very narrow feet so I was expecting my heel to be slipping, but that didn't happen at all! These boots were 5 minutes out of the box and they already felt like they were made for my feet! Amazing! They were such winners I wore them right out for lunch and shopping, they felt so comfy and I got compliments on them as well! I wore them again this morning while I was out for a few hours, and they're only getting better! I've walked around in them for about 5 hours, and not once did my feel feel uncomfortable. They're not heavy at all, either - I forgot I was wearing them until someone said "Wow, I love your boots, what brand are they?!" I'm really happy I got them, and I'm going to start saving for a pair in another color! :) So to sum up, If you're on the fence about these, snap them up! Like I said, I have a few pairs of Frye boots, and these will absolutely be in heavy rotation! 5 stars all the way!

I love the look of this boot in the sand color. I wear them with leggings or tights and they look amazing. I'm a Frye fan in general, and I am rarely disappointed with my purchases. The only thing about these that needed fixing was adding a strip of moleskin to the interior of one of the heels because it rubbed my skin raw. Weird, since this is my second season wearing them! I'll wear a band-aid on the spot and add more moleskin if necessary, since I love these boots!

Great shoes. Really comfortable for such sturdy shoes. I even wore them to fly across the country last weekend. They did take some breaking in, but after the first weekend they've been fine. Definitely recommend these!

After multiple attempts at finding the perfect Frye, I do believe I'm finally there. Started with the Veronica Shortie. It was cute, but poorly made and had a weird fit. Short in the toe box and very large in the heel. Moved on to the Engineer 8R - love the style and the workmanship is impeccable but I found that I had to go a half size down in the 8R and the Charcoal Old Town was not available in the smaller size. After scouring the Internet with no success, I decided to try the 12R fully expecting to send them back. Much to my surprise and delight, the height did not overwhelm my small frame and they are awesome! Once again I went down half a size from my regular size, and they are difficult to get on at first...for some reason more difficult than the 8R but once on, fit like a glove. The color is gorgeous, a very dark smokey grey that will go with everything. Love!

I love these boots. The style is exactly what I was looking for. I was a little worried after I had worn them walking around for a long day, the back of one of the heels really started to hurt and gave me a blister. But I decided to try loosening the buckle, and this seems to have worked. So I'm very glad!

Amazing boots. Yes they're tight on the top of the foot at first, but if you unbuckle them and get determined, they break in quickly. I have high arches and was able to get these on and off quickly enough to get through airport security about a week after I got them. Great color, style, and quality. Do it.

The boot is beautifully made but if you have a high arch, there's no way you can put the boot on. If you have a high arch and were able to put them on, please tell me how you did it! My arch is moderately high and I couldn't get it past my instep. Regretfully, I have to return these.
