These are a great-looking hiking boot. Very well constructed, and I really wish they would have fit more comfortably! It may be the length (or lack of LOL) of my legs, but the top of the boot hit at an uncomfortable place on my ankles. It was better with a tall hiking sock that prevented the friction but I could see it being very annoying/uncomfortable after a long hike. I am very reluctantly returning these because I really love everything about them!

I initially ordered a half size larger than my actual shoe size because the reviews advised me so. They ended up feeling too large and clunky. Maybe I just like a snug shoe? Whatever the reason, I shipped them back (which Zappos makes ridiculously easy) and ordered the next size smaller and they had it on my doorstep in a flash. Without even an initial break in periods, these shoes went right to work doing roughly 15 miles a day over very rugged trails, boulder fields, cobble beaches, slippery, algae-coated, granite outcroppings and crazy-steep hiking paths for 7 days in Acadia National Park. My feet loved them. They had great grip, support across the mid-foot while boulder-hopping, water resistance through some shallow streams and breath ability through some heat throughout the whole day. I loved them. I will buy the new edition of these when these wear out, which probably wont be too soon because they hold us to all that Mt Desert Island and I cold dish up on them so far.

I had been wearing an old pair of hiking boots the previous weekend and hiked about 5 miles, and mangled my little toes as well as my bunion. Clearly my feet had changed in the last 5 years and I needed a new pair. I found this pair as a highly ranked model and decided I should try it out. I was a little apprehensive about the "medium" width because I have a bunion on the left foot, which requires me to buy wider shoes lately. My feet have also grown somewhat larger and I have been ordering 8 or 81/2 shoe size in sneakers. So I decided to order the size 9 hiking shoes, to allow for thick hiking socks. As soon as the new pair arrived, I put it on for my evening 1-mile walk with the dog. It was very comfortable, sturdy and supportive. After a couple of days, I wore the pair for my weekend morning hike, 5 miles one day and 6 miles the next. I walked on paved trails but the recent rains created puddles and muddy slippery stretches, which I negotiated safely, and comfortably. My feet have been very comfortable, yet supported in the arch and the ankle area. I am very pleased: this is the best pair I have ever worn! They are fairly lightweight and stylish enough to wear around parks and restaurants.

Compared to my Keen sandals that are a 9. I ordered a 9.5 to give extra room for a thick sock. exchanged for size 10 with a thick sock it’s absolutely perfect the padding around the ankle gives outstanding support and comfort not to mention the always comfortable Keen Sole. This is an Out of box comfort No breaking in needed.

I'm a size 8 shoe across the board and read the reviews to order up so I purchased an 8.5 and a 9. Let me tell you, my husband was ready to throw the shoes out the window because I was back and forth on both of those sizes for weeks. I've never owned a true hiking boot so I wasn't familiar with how they should feel. Immediately trying them on I felt confident in the 8.5 but was worried I might need a little more wiggle room so then I'd lean more towards the 9's. We were going on a 6 mile hike in the White Mountains and I didn't want to be stuck on a mountain top in pain so I was torn. I ultimately read up on some info as far as how they should initially feel, tried them on with a variety of sock sizes (thin to thick) and at different times of the day when my feel were smaller or more swollen from the day. I'm rambling because I was hoping for a review like this in my search so I'm hoping this is helpful for someone else :) Leave a fingers width behind your heel after you push your toes to the very top of the boot UNTIED. I did this with both thin and thick socks, climbed some stairs, wiggled my ankles around then went with the 8.5 size. The 9's just didn't feel right on the ankles so make sure you take that into consideration. Day of the hike, I was so happy I went with the 8.5 size. My feet were comfortable the entire time and it was the first time I wore them, no breaking in prior to the hike. My only con is that they have zero grip on slippery rocks. I learned that the hard way and then it was a tough trip down trying to avoid most of the rock walking paths. Unfortunately it was raining so it was just bad luck on that. Dry land was great. Would definitely recommend for day hikes.

These are lightweight and versatile hiking shoes. I ordered up 1/2 size from the size I usually wear so I coiuld use heavier socks and the shoes fit very nicely with my favorite hiking socks. I have had some ankle issues with my right leg (as in I broke it and had surgery that included both sides of the ankle to have it set) and it has been years since I have actually wanted to put anything around the ankle. Even with scars, screws on one side and a plate on the other, it fits my ankle nicely and doesn't rub. Same foot also has a hammer toe and the extra toe room in Keen shoes makes that work as well. Most of the walking and wearing I have done so far has been mild, but we are getting ready for some more moderate hiking and I am looking forward to it.

I love love LOVE these boots. They are light but supportive and have good cushioning. I have wide toes and narrow heels and these are perfect. I had a pair of 8.5 and ordered them again but the new ones were big, so I had to go down to an 8. This is still my favorite boot. I put them on and walked 2 miles - comfortable right out of the box. My old ones are two years old and still usable but I wanted a new pair for hiking.

My daughter has owned 3 sets of this style of Keen and has been very happy with them. My husband has also owned the Targhee Mid II and says they're a great shoe. I had to get a pair of hiking shoes for a paleontological dig in the Plains of Montana and know the Keens to be a nice supportive shoe with room for a wide foot, which I need, so I bought them. I usually wear a 9 but I wanted to make sure they had the room for hiking rugged terrain so I got the 9.5 and they're perfect! They did exactly what I needed for getting over steep rocky ground, and tough enough to protect my feet from cacti, yucca, and other harsh vegetation. Never got a blister and I was in them for up to 8 hours per day for a solid week straight. LOVE KEENS

i hiked the Peruvian Andes in these boots for two grueling weeks. They kept my feet well protected and were very comfortable even on the most rugged terrain. They run 1/2 size too small. I normally wear a 6.5 but the 7 was perfect.

I think this was the most satisfying shoe purchase of my entire life - and I have bought many a shoe. If you could only see my Zappos purchase history... Having never hiked or ever wanted to, I bought these for a dream-come-true trip to New Zealand in hopes of seeing the picturesque landscape shown on desktop wallpapers and Lord of the Rings movies. The journey and the shoes did not disappoint. Firstly, without breaking these in at all, I endured a tedious 12-mile hike and they kept my feet comfy, stable and sweat-free for over 8 straight hours. When my body was giving up, these shoes kept my feet going. Three additional grueling, but beautiful hikes later, I rinsed off the dirt, muck, blood, sweat and tears and they still looked like new. Wearing sandals in a size 6 and dress shoes in a 6.5, my medium-bordering-on-wide~ish feet were cozy in these boots at a size 6 while wearing thick hiking socks. They were lightweight, water resistant and breathable at every step and the extra cushy ankle support saved me many times over on questionable terrain. I would repurchase these boots in a heartbeat although I may not need to because they seem very sturdy and well-made. I wish I could say the same for my knees. Buy them now!

I bought these boots for a trip to Costa Rica, where I would be doing heavy hiking in both dry and humid, muddy conditions. We were required to have leather boots to protect us from snake bites, and to wear snake chaps while hiking. I was so impressed with them. I wore them once before I left to break them in, and they were not uncomfortable at the first wear. I wore these boots every day for 12 days on my trip and only got one tiny blister. In the dry forest of Costa Rica, these boots allowed me to be on my feet for hours with minimal discomfort, and had great traction for intense hiking and climbing rocky trails. In the rainforest, I often found myself in ankle deep mud, and my feet stayed relatively dry! I would recommend these Keen boots to anyone doing moderate to heavy hiking in almost any condition! They were perfect for doing field research, comfortable, and I love the pink tongue.

After reading all 448 reviews, I thought this boot was too good to be true. I am ECSTATIC to report that everything I read was true! I have high arches, weak skinny ankles, horrible arthritis in both big toes, and these boots were actually comfortable right out of the box! I have tried 100's of boots on over the years and finally succumbed to the fact that my goal was to find the "least" most uncomfortable boot... what a wonderful surprise!

So pleased with these. I almost sent them back right after trying them on because there was pressure on the back of my calf/ankle from the boot. (I usually prefer low cut boots). Luckily, however, I absolutely had to have a pair of boots for a hike that day, and decided to give these a go. They broke in within 10 minutes. I do not believe boots need to be "broken in" over a period of time - I buy them when they fit right out of the box. I'm ever thankful I decided to break that rule and keep these. They are wonderfully comfortable, have great options for adjusting the laces at various points (important when boulder hopping) and I have confirmed that they are moisture resistant. I say that only because I did not give them the "oops I was leaping for a rock in the stream and missed" test. I did, however, splash through some shallow puddles and kept my feet nice and dry. The soles provided just enough traction to do the rock hopping I needed to cross a couple of streams, and apparently more than my hiking partner on wet grass - he slipped, I did not. Love these boots. I am not a hard core hiker. I live in Alaska, do 5-10 miles of hiking in a day, and avoid the super steep off-trail hikes. I have thick calves that sort of just end at my foot (I hope this is an anonymous review) and create a problem for me finding hiking boots and ski boots that fit correctly without putting too much pressure on my ankle/calf area. These adjust beautifully.

Best hiking boot ever! No breaking in required and no blisters after an 10 mile hike. Usually shoes hurt due to my bunions and flat feet issues, but they felt great after the hike! I love love love them! :)

Love the boots but love Zappos better. I ordered these boot late in the day and thought since it was late I would not get next day delivery. They arrived next day early afternoon. Love it.

I originally wanted to get the shoes at REI, but they only had limited selection on colors, but Zappos had the color I liked. So for same price (without tax) I went ahead and bought it online. I ordered it on Friday and received it on Monday. Great service. I have only wore it once, so I cannot go in detail on how shoes fit me, regards to hiking yet. Will update after few hikes.

If you have wide feet, these are fabulous boots! I have a bunion on my right foot which has made it very difficult in the past to find boots that does not eventually cause pain! Not so with these boots. Right from the box they were comfortable enough to do a three mile hike over rough rocky granite terrain without a problem. I had ordered both a size 10 and 10½ after reading all the reviews saying to order up half a size, but I found the size 10s (my usual size) to be just right. I love my Keens!

These are wider than other Keen shoes like the Alamosa, so if others seem a bit narrow, try these instead! They are comfortable, and require little to no breaking in as advertised. They provide good arch and ankle support. Highly recommended! Definitely need to order a half-size to full size up (for me, a half-size up from my running shoes, or a full size up from dress/everyday shoes).

I bought my boots three years ago, and they are still in great shape. I recently injured my foot, and these are the only shoes that allow me to walk comfortably all day long. I highly recommend them for city walking and trail hiking.

I ordered these shoes because I was looking for an "urban" hiking shoe - for people who spend a lot of time walking around in rain/slush/weekend outdoorsy activity etc. These shoes are actually excellent - they are comfortable and the right level of "rough" for an urban hiking shoe. My only discomfort was that they are quite wide on the toe on the outside. They give this impression of a very broad shoe. I decided to send them back because of aesthetics, but they were outstanding in comfort!
