I have had these boots for 20 years. Backpacking, hiking and hunting. The leather is beat, but they are still 100% waterproof, and tread is great. The only thing I have done to them is changed shoe laces.
These boots are worth the money. Nothing compares.

This is my third pair in 22 years. I am still wearing pair 2, but I thought it was time to start breaking in pair 3. I wear them all winter on the farm and hiking. I also wear them for mountain hiking in the summer. They are good in snow. Good arch and ankle support. Need a little breaking in. Fit is my normal size with enough room for thick sox.

Love these. I had another pair of these boots and just worn them out. They are light and are excellent on the trail. No blisters over many miles. I have put hundreds of miles on them and was really upset when I worn them out. Thank goodness Zappos had them. If you like to hike the mountains not just a flat trail, these are the boots for you. Love them.

This is the perfect hiking boot if you are an aesthetically minded person. Simple, very comfortable, and hard to find.

My first pair of Vasque Sundowner's lasted well over 20 years of rugged use! Unlike many things these days, these are built to last and I'd recommend them to anyone. I love these boots! I ordered these on a Saturday, I had them them on Monday, and that was with the free shipping! Zappos, you rock!

I've been wearing these hiking shoes for over twenty years. They do require breaking in.
I don't backpack anymore but I still use these boots for all day hikes. I recommend them for serious hikers.

I bought my Vasque Sundowners about 1994. By the time I wore them to the first golf major tournament played in Wisconsin, the 2005 PGA Championship at Kohler (I believe), I was sliding down on my backside on ever grassy hill we walked over. My wife is next to me now cracking up. Practically rolling on the floor laughing. Those hills were topped with very long grass and I had a terrible time walking that day. My pants were all grass stained. I looked like a yahoo in that crowd. But the point is I wore those shoes everywhere, to the point where there was barely any tread left because I loved those shoes. I hiked Glacier park, Yellowstone park, Italy, France and England. I think I practically grieved when I finally tossed them. By the time we went to see Vijay and Tiger play that day there was nothing left of those shoes. The tread was as smooth as glass. They took such an amazing pounding over the years it's unreal. I plowed snow every winter in them. I never hesitated to march right through streams, even if it was over my ankles. I remember conditioning the leather on numerous occasions and they always came back to life. I'm longing for another pair. I'm diabetic and I need a shoe that will protect my feet seriously. The Sundowners are my logical best choice. Don't hesitate, just buy them.

I bought a pair of these 21 years ago, when I was prego with my son. Last year, after only 3 resoles, they finally went their last mile. These boots have more miles on them than my Subaru! I would NEVER dream of buying any other boot. 21 years? Yea, I got my money's worth.

Very cute boot. Great price compared to similar styles. Too bad this didn’t work. I tried 3 sizes. I’m usually 9.5. I tried 9, 9.5 and 10. The 10 felt shorter than the 9.5. Top of boot pressed down on big toes. Disappointed with the fit. Loved that they are both stylish and waterproof for that traditional alpine look yet functional.

Very cute hiking boot. I purchased these to compare to the Danner Mountain light to wear on a hiking trip in the Scottish highlands in a few weeks. I love the look of the Danner's but when I saw these I wanted to give them a try because they are almost half the price and waterproof. I was shocked the Danners cost almost $400 and are not even waterproof. My regular shoe size is a 9.5 and I wore a 9 in the Danner. I ordered both a 9 and 9.5 in the Vasque Sundowner based on the other reviews and was very disappointed in the fit. I put the 9.5 on and they were too small. I think they are just a bit too short but the top of the boot also presses down on my big toes. It's really too bad because these are really super cute and a great lower priced alternative to the Danners. I am going to return and try the 10. I hope they won't be too big and clunky but it will be totally worth it to save more than $150 plus get waterproof boots.

After reading all the reviews, positive and negative, I decided to take a chance on this pair. These are now made in Vietnam. Don't know how it compares to the Italian made shoes that Vasque previously offered but quality wise, I would say it is a tad less well-made than my Lowa Renegades and Jambu Flex Climbers. Style is very nice. The shoes made my wide feet appear narrow and the red oak color should go well with a lot of colors. Shoes are a bit stiff coming out of the box but may just need breaking in as some have said. All things considered, am quite satisfied with this pair and look forward to bringing them along on some walking trips that I have planned.

Very disappointed that the quality of these boots has dropped tremendously over the past 10 years. Used to be made of Italian leather, not anymore. This has lead to the boots being much less comfortable than years past. Decent boot, but no where near as comfortable.

Had same/ similar boots years ago, not sure if they were Vasque. Now bought size 8M though I need a wide shoe/ boot due to arthritis & bunions. Wide was not available until the day after I bought the 8M! That size proved to be much too large in length & width. Now have the 7-1/2 Wide (8 being returned) , which is okay, I think a 7 Wide would be too short. Experimenting with various innersoles to accommodate different weights of socks, depending on weather. I put in an extra innersole with the ones which came with the boots & are removable; seems okay with medium weights socks. Put on a heavier pair of wool socks, these are fine with the original innersole. I think you'd be okay with your usual size/width boot and then experiment with innersoles. The heel is a bit loose but I don't think it is enough to give me a blister. These are heavy duty hikers, not lightweight and will most likely need a break-in period which was the case with my 30 year old ones. After breaking in those were very comfortable. Although the leather is heavy, they are not too stiff. The sole is definitely thick and heavy, most likely great for traction and rough surfaces like trails/ rocks. And these are waterproof with Gore-Tex. Not cheap but if these last as long as the originals I may never need another pair!

Just so stiff. Wore them for an hour around the house and already was developing blisters. I tried every method of lacing there is the the hot spots on ankle bones and front of my ankle were just toast. I LOVE the style and support of these boots I guess they’re just not for me. Also the left may have been almost a 1/2 size smaller than the right.

I originally ordered this in 9 W. It ran to big so I ordered the size 8 1/2 W and still it wasn't fitting correctly even with thick hiking socks. I don't want blisters. Also, the quality of this boot was very disappointing. I had a pair of Vasque hiking boots years ago that lasted through many adventures. But the quality of this boot is poor. It looks like it won't last a summer of hiking.

This is a clunky looking boot that was stiff, and I mean really stiff, out of the box. The ankle height was awkward and the leather was a so, so quality. This is not a cheap boot, but it is cheap looking. Did not like it at all.

This boot has been redesigned with a deeper toebox that completely alters the fit and support of the boot. For some people, this may not be a problem. But for me, it is a huge disappointment after wearing this boot for over 25 years in a women's size 9 wide. My feet are swimming in the 9 wide, so I tried a 9 medium. It was too narrow. So, I went down to an 8 1/2 wide. It is still too sloppy, even with a thicker sock. I cannot go to an 8 1/2 medium because I can already tell that I should not narrow the imprint of the sole any more. For me the earlier fit with the shallower toe box was so supportive for both my arches and ankles that I didn't need to wear orthodics for support. I got all my support from the boot. (This was my only footwear I could wear without custom orthodics). I won't even be able to use orthodics in these new boots because it will cause me blisters.
In addition to the change in the sizing, the sole has changed. It does not feel as shock-absorbing as the earlier boots. I believe that it isn't just the logo on the sole that has changed. It must have something to do with the materials the sole is made out of. I have a deteriorated cervical and get headaches from the impact of hard surfaces when my footwear doesn't adequately absorb shock.
Unfortunately, wearing the boots around the house cannot really put them to the test. So, I have been disappointed with the last 2 pairs of these that I purchased, and was unable to return them. I do know for sure now, that I simply cannot purchase these anymore. Very sad.

I have worn this shoe in this style for years. These have been redesigned and do not fit properly. I ordered my regular size, too small, next size up -- way too large. What's up with my shoes? I am very disappointed that Vasque has changed the manufacture of this style. The most notable change is the lacing system, which doesn't look as effective or durable, but since I can't get a pair to fit properly, longevity isn't something I could comment on. These were great shoes. It's sad when you wake up in the morning and you find out that those other days are gone.

ordered size 8.5, it was really a 6
Big waste of my time ordering, trying on, returning
This makes me very angry b/c when I order a pair in a particular size, it may run small or large, but an 8 should never be anything other than an 8!

I have been wearing Vasque boots for over 25 years, almost always Sundowners. So, I ordered a pair this past December but this time I had a problem right away - one boot developed a crease in the toe that hit my big toe at every step causing pain. I had them stretched in the hope of smoothing the crease to no avail. I am now the owner of another pair Vasque boots - Talus - which so far are very comfortable.
