I decided to buy a new recon because I loved the one I bought about two years ago. I love the color that I chose (rabbit grey with copper), but when I got it and compared it to my older one, I realized that it seemed a bit smaller. My older one is 31 liters compared to one and it's also a bit wider, which makes taking out items easier. Also, with the first zipper that has the pockets, it doesn't run all the way down like the older one and it also has less pockets (probably because it doesn't run all the way down & because it's not as wide). Another con is that it has less padding, but it does have a separate zipper for my laptop which I LOVE (but still wish it had a bit more padding). All in all I still love my new one and it's still as comfortable, but I just wish it had a bit more padding and pockets like the old one. This is still a great backpack and I still recommend it! :)

I have back issues, and I thought buying this would solve that problem. However, the top part of the shoulder strap is uncomfortable. There is also a lot of space, yet the two big compartments are very constricting and I have to take everything out to either get something or put something back. The most annoying part is that it does't stand still when I put it on the ground during class, and it tilts over. It also does not have a laptop bag, and that was very disappointing. If you're a college student I would not recommend this backpack!!!! I do like the style, but overall it's not comfortable and does not have enough space for a college student.

This is a great backpack and has plenty of features. I like the deep side pockets for a water bottle and/or umbrellas. I wish the adjustable straps were shorter or had some way for them not to dangle. I do like the fact that the waist straps are removable.

I've wanted a north face backpack for a while because they don't look like they are bulging at the seams and it seemed a little smaller than my last backpack. I love this backpack. It's very lightweight and doesn't it add extra weight to my already heavy load. It fits my 4 thick spiral journals, two composition journals, a planner, a workbook, a novel, two pencil pouches, and my lunch. But it doesn't look like it at all. I love the two water bottle pockets, because they are so convenient. The only thing a little uncomfortable is that the first few days the straps are very firm and dig into your shoulders. But once it is broken in the backpack is very comfy.

This bag is for my daughter for eighth grade. She picked it out and she loves the colors (white/pink). It holds her Mac Air lap top and is quite comfortable. It was a good choice!

Previous versions were excellent as gym bags. This one does not open widely enough for my equipment: clothing, shoes, swimsuit, fins, cap and goggles, plus toiletries, glasses, keys, and wallet. Because it does not stand up but is also quite tall, it is difficult to reach all the way to the bottom while the bag is flopping over. The ubiquitous laptop compartment is useless and a waste of space if one is using this bag for the gym. Previous versions opened wider and could hold everything, plus a purchase or two on the way home. Previous versions also functioned as a carryon that fit under the seat when flying; this one is way too flat and narrow for items to be easily pulled out while on a plane. In addition, the zippers stick and do not slide easily. Back to the store it goes. I can find a much cheaper and better proportioned backpack from other sources. Please, North Face, go back to your more versatile and functional designs of the past.

Bought this as a college graduation gift for friend's children. My own children bought the Recon backpack when they went off to college and they loved it! They are out of college now and still using the backpack...stood up really well! It's the perfect size for a laptop, notebooks, jacket and water bottle.

I use this bag for my ever day commute - lunch, coffee, laptop, kindle, power brick, etc. and there is more than enough room but without feeling like I'm carrying a gigantic travel bag. But at the same time it's perfect for travel as a large carry on or even as a weekend travel bag if you can pack light. Really great all around functionality and a cool, sleek look that contours nicely to my back. Very happy with this backpack.

I love the design and the fact that allows you to carry a heavy load comfortably. Also, the zippers are good quality and love the laptop compartment However, I wish it had more pockets to organize cables, and that the top handle had better padding.

I actually have the older Recon, the one before this series. It is the best back you will ever get, it is VERY durable. I have had mine for about 5 years and the straps are still bright, and it still looks the exact same, NO wear and tears AT ALL. Very easy to clean as well! The only reason I'm getting another one is that I want a different color.

it's amazing and works for all my needs but it would be nicer if the front pocket, first zipper one, extended all the way down!

I use it for school. The 3rd main pocket does not go all the way down, which I thought was poorly designed. I would enjoy it more if the 3rd main packet (with the organizers) if it went all the way to the bottom of the backpack. The outside mesh pocket, and the fleece lining pockets are very nice though.

Great for school use, especially college. Durable, easy to store items and attractive. Just wish the bag was able to stand on its own.
