I was looking to upgrade my 20+ yr old NF Wasatch backpack which unloaded my laptop in the parking garage when it was partially zippered - my bad! I narrowed my choices to the Recon and Surge, and finally settled on the Recon for its size and am really pleased with the functionality. Specifically, shoulder straps are comfortable and do not slide off anymore, 40 oz hydro flask fits nicely without worrying about toppling out and 15" laptop fits with room to spare and will not "spill" out even if zipper is open. With the Wasatch holding up this long w/o any wear or zipper problems there was no reason to look at anything else but NorthFace. Thank you.

This bag is great! It has multiple compartments for easy organization, the back padding makes the bag super comfortable and it's a great design as well!

My daughter plays 2 varsity sports. She carries a lot of gear along with her books and needed something comfortable and durable for her books that would support her back. She loves this backpack!

I first used this backpack last year when my friend let me used hers for my one month trip through Colombia. I was enjoyed having it more and more in every stretch of the journey. I was able to fit so much in it (including my laptop, change of clothes, a book, souvenirs, electronics, and sweets from different towns), it is the perfect size for carry on, it didnt feel heavy even when it was loaded and i was able to access everything quickly because of its multiple compartments. It made my trip through the country easier so now I have my own Recon and I am so happy to travel with it.

I ordered this backpack as a new backpack for school and it is perfect! It has a good amount of pockets and perfect for holding your computer and books. The hard backing to it ensures time that my computer is protected and even provides a nice comfort to your back so nothing is poking into it.

It was a great product. I use it for school, and traveling for games and school activities, and it was the perfect size, wasn't too big and wasn't too small.

I specifically got this bag for personal travel. I just prefer a backpack. I went for the dark color because I wanted something different than my hiking backpack. I was happily surprised by the weight of this. It is lightweight enough that it is not offensive on the back but solid enough that it feels sturdy and like it is going to be durable (time will tell). A ton of room and good pocket space. And the color choice was spot on for me. The black and silver/gray looks clean.

This is THE backpack this year for my daughter's 6th grade class, so we just had to order it. ;0 She loves everything about it so far, except that she has to wriggle her laptop into it each morning. She says after that, it slides easily in and out of the pocket the rest of the day. I'm thinking of ordering one for myself for my own laptop to take to work.

Bought this backpack for my sister, who commutes daily 1 hr to her office. She loved that she could walk around with it and have all her stuff, there was a safety whistle, and the real color was to die for!
My only complaint was the back was very stiff, but I'm sure that's part of the design for comfort.

Bought a NF Recon 4 years ago and recently thought I was upgrading with the new features. Wish it was larger on the previous veraionyhe admin section had a full comaprmemt. The new version only has a half section in the admin portion. The laptop section is no longer a pocket but a complete sperate zipper compartment. I believe we lost some valuable real-estate but it's not specified. The construction it great the reason I was up grading we had a store credit for 100.00 and didn't need anything else. We love North Face just disappointed the newer version is small then previous..

I use this product to store my school needs since I am a college student. I have never found a backpack that can be durable enough to fit my books like this backpack!

I use it on a daily basis for school and for personal use. It is very durable and can hold many things, however I think I would like it more if there were more easy-to-reach pockets.

I have an older version of the Recon and have had it for years. Love it. I've used it for day hiking, commuting, travel, and for my photography gear (adding in bottom padding). This newer version has a dedicated laptop/tablet compartment which makes airline TSA check-ins so much easier. Being a backpacker, I have an appreciation for the harness suspension system (including belt). I've been able to haul some serious weight in my Recon. I will keep my old Recon for day hiking and plan to use this one for commuting and travel.
