Good All-rounder -
Got this shoe to replace my Lowa Tempest Los. Not as good for hiking, but much better for all-around. Great for running-cushy, protective, etc. Not too heavy. Sole compresses a bit too much. Great traction. Good breathability. Top hole.

Great shoe overall.
Training for 100 miler and putting 50 miles a week base building I finally ran across, pardon the pun, a shoe that has it all or at least as much as it can. The give and take in the shoe world is a tough one but at the end of the day this shoe, for me, is the best. While a bit heavy initially it can only make you stronger and you quickly get past the boxy feel and don't even notice it. The shoe is a bit stiff but when you need the support the stiffness pays huge dividends on the long trail. Your foot is snug as a bug and is extremely well protected. The tread grips the trail nicely and you're not carrying it around with you, meaning the trail doesn't stick to the bottom of your shoe. The shoes run small as I had to send the size 9 back to get a 9.5 and eventually receive a size 10, my first ever and these are a little snug. The laces need to be a bit longer, I removed them and added speed laces. I've tried many different shoes and this Montrail Hardrock works for me the best.

ZUMA SAYS -
Very nice shoe! Fit seems maybe a bit snug, but being summer my dogs swell up a little, go a 1/2 size larger and you will be golden. Nice grip and feel off road, though I haven't put a hundred miles on yet! Shoe looks way nice! Wish it felt as good. Comfort still a solid 4.

My review of the Montrail Hardrock -
Upon trying on my new Hardrocks I found them very comfortable. They were a little heavy for the shoes I had been wearing, but for the protection they provided they were lighter than expected. The cushioning was not adequate for me, so I took out the inserts and added my own. The shoes provided great protection when running over rocks on the trail. I wouldn't recommend them for running a PR in a race, but they would work well on a fast thru hike on a rocky trail.

Nice -
These were my first pair of trail shoes for a trip to Honduras and they worked great and after numerous miles of running and a backpacking trip they’re still comfortable. One con is that the tread chunked off the first few days and it not that great on cobble stone roads or any hard slick surface that’s wet, but its a very comfortable shoe and look forward to another pair.

Ouch!
I bought these for trail running and man...they tore up my right ankle! The shoes are heavy and clunky, and the material in the ankle area feels like it's made out of a cheese grater! Ouch!! The cushioning was seriously lacking, my feet hurt after 3 miles and even the skimpiest road shoes never gave me any troubles on the most technical of trails.
I will say this: Excellent toe protection for rocks.
Use this as a hiking shoe, not a trail runner.

If it wasn't broken, why fix it?
This is my fourth pair of Montrail Hardrock. In the past, not only was a great trail runner, it required no breaking in- you could wear it right out of the box.
Not any more. I just took a new pair to Thailand and after a 8 mile jungle hike, had a nasty blister on my Achilles heel which pretty much ruined the rest of my trip.
When I got home, I compared it to my previous pair of Hardrocks and found the problem- they moved that hard plastic band on the back heel (that has the word Montrail printed on it) up a full inch. So instead of supporting the heel, it now cuts deep into it.
I have no idea why Montrail would make such a change. It was the perfect shoe, now it's a torture device.
Also, I still don't understand why Montrail doesn't do proper sizing-- I had to order 3 pair from Zappos before I realized that the shoe is a full size smaller than marked.

Poor sole quality -
I picked these shoes up for light, fast hike on the JMT. Found them to have the same comfort and feel as previous Montrail products but the soles wore down ridiculously fast.
Now with about 120 miles on them they are just about shot and lacking grip.
Wouldn't recommend them for anything too hardcore...oddly, they're named after the Hardrock 100.
