Montrail Torre GTX review - Both my husband and I are climbing Kilimanjaro and these are the recommended boots. We have been breaking them in for a month now and starting to get a bit more comfy. However, they are no sneaker. We love Zappos, they shipped them to us over night!

I got a pair of these last summer(2004) barely a month before taking a 7 day hike through the wind river range. I was concerned that I didn't have time to break them in but I had no blisters, and it is simply the most comfortable boot I have ever worn. The only improvement could be in the foot beds. I just got some super feet insoles to make them the best. Kept my feet dry after 2 days of solid rain, multiple steam crossings etc. as long as they keep making these, I will keep buying them. Great support to with a relatively heavy pack, and on very primitive unkempt trails. A winner!

Excellent comfort out of the box - This boot lives up to its reviews. This is the first shoe I've bought online and the experience has been better than I thought possible. Zappos matched the price (beat it actually) and shipping was free. No taxes in my state made the purchase even more affordable. The shoe is comfortable for a 12 hour shift walking on rocks and uneven ground. Looks good too.

Good value - I ordered a more expensive shoe which I returned because of size issues, not quality, but this shoe came in my size and I cannot imagine the more expensive one being any better. Very comfortable, well made.

Ready to hit the trail - Extremely fast delivery; one of the best fitting boots ever! (I know because that's pretty much all I wear!) My lady and I both got boots and readying ourselves for the appalachian trail next year. We'll definetly use Zappos for all future footwear.

Breaking in my second pair - As long as these boots are available, I'll keep buying the Torre GTX. I've had my first pair for 3 years now, and they've kept me bone dry and blister free through deserts, mountains and forests. The tread holds up surprisingly well, and none of the glue or stitching has come undone. My first pair are still stiff and tough, but I had to jump at the chance to get a backup pair on sale.

Great boot - With the vibram soles and Goretex lining, you can't go wrong with these guys. These boots are killer for a day hike or a week trek. Didn't take long to break them in and they get more comfortable the more I wear them.

best boot - This is the most confortable boot or shoe I have ever owned. The vibram sole is awesome. They keep your feet and ankles well protected, and they are not very heavy. If you have a narrow foot I recommend these for you.

Montrail Torre GTX - I was looking for a good backpacking boot. I tried the Vasque Sundowner which was putting pressure on my 2nd and 3rd toes (which are longer than my great toe). These have more room in the toe box. Haven't had them on the trail but I suspect that they will perform well (Gore-tex liner, Vibram soles).

Good Boots - These are great shoes. Everything about them is perfect. They are not loose, but not too snug. They feel great, don't need any time to wear them in, and are a pleasure to wear. I am completely satisfied with my choice. I bought these with another pair of boots that I was positive I was going to keep (North Face), but these turned out to be the most comfortable pair of boots that I've ever worn. The only thing the other pair had on these (not by a lot) was the look, but then again, you don't buy a pair of hiking boots for looks. These are incredibly comfortable walking around a house, hiking up a nearby mountain and through a swamp, and simply walking around town.

500 mile road test - I walked the 500 mile pilgrimage road in Spain--St. Jean Pied-de-Port to Santiago de COmpostela--in these Montrails--the width, the support, the tread--magnificanet! And never a blister, never a stubbed toe on all kinds of terrain from sand to dry stream-beds to cobbles to city streets. And waterproof up to the ankle. It doesn't get better than this! These fabulous shoes turned a potential torture test into a romp--and after 500 miles, they seem to be good to go for 500 more. No planned obsolescence here. Thanks, Montrail!

I have wide, square feet with Morton's foot (second toe longer than big toe). I bought these when I figured out that my Asolo GTX boots were never going to work out because of the curved last, which made my outer toes into burger on long hikes, despite the boot being the right length overall. The Montrails are on a straight last, and fit much better. I have about 300 miles of hiking on these now carrying light to moderate loads (about 25 lbs), and am happy with them. They broke in easily with no heel blisters, and though they feel slightly soft when walking on side-slopes, I have had no ankle twisting injuries with them and I have to conclude that they are stable. Traction is excellent. I have had these on rough terrain most of the time, including quite a bit of sharp granitic rock, and they combine traction with good sole durability. Waterproofing is fair. A few puddles or a quick stream crossing is no problem, but in sustained heavy rain and puddles, they get soaked. I suppose anything would. Overall, the best boot I have found after several tries with other brands. I will buy another pair if they are available when these wear out.

As Advertised - This boot is functional and comfortable (in a solid sort of way). I wear them at least 5 days per week. It is true to size (at least my size). Looks? Let's just say form follows function. Not a great looker, but I was buying function, not fashion.

Good shoe for wide feet. It is difficult to find hiking boots for my wide feet. These shoes are comfortable and are holding up well. I have only logged about 30 trail miles on 4 day hikes, but the shoes are already broken in and feel good on my feet. The only drawback is that I would like better arch support.

GTX Wide review - Very supportive shoe. comfortable. Excellent box width. Needed thicker insole due to too much top to bottom room in the forefoot area.

Torre GTX Wide - I'm sure this is a fine boot, just not wide enough for my super-wide forefoot. I wear a New Balance men's sz7 4E walking/running shoe, 2E or "wide" sizes just aren’t wide enough for me. I had read a review elsewhere highly recommending the Torre GTX size WIDE for extra wide feet that are not extra wide in the heel, thought I would give it a try... I do a lot of off-trail backpacking over rough terrain; wish I could find a boot that didn't kill my feet! This boot looks and feels well-made and sturdy--Montrail is an actual hiking boot brand as opposed to city-wear so-called "hiking boots," and this wide size probably is wider than average, but is not extra-wide. (Real hiking boot=NOT cushy/comfy!--more like firm/rigid, with a good stiff sole).

Fit like a glove - These are the best boots I've had in 10 years. They fit perfectly the first time I put them on, and 1.5 years later still fit like a glove. I'm tempted to buy a 2nd pair to have ready if/when these wear out (probably years from now). My only complaint is that the gore-tex didn't make it to my second winter, so I can't wade through the slush anymore. But since the outers are all leather, I think I can fix that with externally applied water repellent.

A Substantial Backpacking/Hiking Boot - The Montrail Torre GTX’s are the first substantial backpacking/hiking boots I have purchased. Previously I have used a couple of different Hi-Tech models. I am more than satisfied as to the performance of the Montrail Torre GTX boot. After a brief break-in period, I wore these boots on a four-day backpacking trip into California’s Desolation Wilderness. My packed weight was 42 lbs. These boots kept my feet comfortable and dry. It’s the first time I didn’t feel the need to take off my boots as soon as I arrived at my destination. I tested the Gore-Tex by standing in water up to the fifth eyelet. These boots did not let in a drop of water. Hiking through the Desolation Wilderness subjects your boots and your feet to uneven terrain and jagged rocks. The Vibram soles insured my feet stayed comfortable and did well sticking to smooth rock surfaces. Another nice feature is the rubber protection around the toe box. If I had to find fault in these boots I would say the Nubuck is a little fragile, as I did gouge it on a rock. After cleaning and re-waterproofing with Nikwax, I believe they are going to be fine. If these boots are a good fit for you I highly recommend them.

Finally, boots that fit! I’m giving the Montrail Torre GTX boots four and a half stars out of five. Not that I’m dissatisfied, it’s just that the boots would have to hike by themselves for me to give them a five star rating. The boots fit great and are very comfortable. The arches are very good, good enough to not need “Superfeet” arch supports. I may replace the existing arches when they wear down. I like the look, and the Gore Tex lining needs no comment other than it’s the best waterproofing available. There are two technical aspects of the boot that needs to be addressed. First, the eyelets are way too small. I unlaced the boots in order to re-lace them in a different way. If the laces weren’t new, with brand new aglets on the strings, I would not have be able to string them through. If I happen to break a lace in the field, I would be out of luck. Solution: always pack new laces. The second problem is that the vibram soles are a little too shallow. I like the old style tread which has deep lugs and 90 degree angles . The old style may not be “self cleaning” as it’s described in the literature, but they would have much more “bite” on very steep smooth granite and especially on severe downhill slides. Here’s the real good news. I’ve had the boots for about two months and have hiked many miles of steep inclines and rocky trails including a climb up Mt. Lassen and a grueling day hike to the top of Half Dome and back (17 miles) without any problems with toes jamming the front of the boot, or heals slipping, or blisters! I also took two trips to Feather Falls which is the 6th highest falls in the U.S. If you don’t know where that is, good! The boots have performed as expected, flawlessly! BTW a size 14 weighs 4.25 pounds.

Before I got these I usually just went with Merrell's since they usually last so long, but my last pair split right at the toe (on both shoes! And of course ruined the waterproofing, so I decided to try a different brand. Very glad I did, these are really comfy both on trail and off and keep my feet nice and dry. Only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the sole doesn't have much grip on ice (not a big concern) and the footbeds aren't that great. I would highly advise getting some superfeet insoles as soon as possible for any pair of shoes.

Great all around boot - After ordering several different brands of boot I finally settled on the Montrail Torre. It has a great last that I beleive fits a wider variety of feet than most hiking boots. I am very happy with this purchase.

Not for me - I bought these boots a year ago and wore them around the house to break them in, after getting professionally fitted. They felt great in the store and around the house, but once on the trail they were oh so painful. I added superfeet insoles and wore a liner sock with a smartwool midweight sock. The problem I had with these boots was heel rub. My heel is very narrow and these boots just didn't work out for me, but my foot is different than yours so they may work. Another problem I had was how they held up. I took them on a backpacking trip and hiked 12 miles each day for two days and the rubber toe cap started to come off and the leather got a big gash on one side. I think these boots are more of a light hiker with the weight of a heavy backpacking boot. Not my favorite but maybe they will work for you.

I really liked the boots when I got them. It took some time to break them in but all was great after that. Unfortunately after 2nd winter season of light hiking (mostly 2-3 day trips on the AT) boots started to leak water in the toes area. I am puzzled because there is absolutely no damage to the exterior of the boots. I expected much more from expensive boots. I will not purchase Montrail product again.
