Needs the padding to go all the way around the top opening. Really digs into the ankles. Parked my car on top of them for the night to see if it would help break in that area. No luck. Two pairs of socks are a must. If I was able to try them on first they would not be my first choice. These are my 7th. pair of Rockport's and I won't buy again without trying them on. There are no stores in the entire Upper Peninsular of Michigan that even carry them any more since they changed hands. Peeps are picky that way up here when it comes to quality. Way too much money for this shoe.

This is a nice looking shoe, and very comfortable. I ordered the wide, which fit my wide forefoot nicely, but was loose in the heel. Some drugstore stick-ons took care of that adequately. The comfort comes with a price, however. The sole is quite soft, and I don't expect these to last well. There is a much more serious problem, however. These shoes are very slippery on wet surfaces (eg., pavement), even when new, and one has to step very carefully to avoid a fall. What is the point of making a waterproof shoe that that cannot be used safely in wet weather?

I've been a Rockport Editorial Office - Plaintoe wearer for years. This shoe is not nearly as comfortable. To start, there's no padding all the way around the top edge. It is very stiff, which I've never seen in a Rockport shoe before. Lastly, my foot slips in the shoe, and it is the same size I've always worn with a Rockport. I'm quite disappointed.

Have purchased at least five pairs over the past five years. Have noted decline in overall quality. First couple of pairs lasted at least 12 months and were the most comfortable shoe in recent memory. More recent purchases have not lasted mire than 6 or 7 months. Under similar use conditions. Also, impossible to find replacement laces comparable in quality and appearance to originals

The Northfield shoe does not wear well any longer. Like the other writers said, the heels wear down quickly and the shoe laces shred. In addition the back of the shoe tends to crumple.

This would be the perfect shoe except for a fatal flaw. It is not too formal and not too casual - that isn't an issue. The leather upper construction is excellent. It stays together well. The terrible flaw is the heel. It is made out of this ridiculous foam that wears out noticeably after even a short walk. I wish I could have a professional replace it with a Vibram sole.

These are my first Rockports and I got them primarily for a comfortable shoe that I could wear to work (office) and on the weekends particularly when it rains or snows when I don't want to wear leather soled dress shoes. I have had the Northfields for about two weeks now. As for size, I first ordered another Rockport style in a 10.5 and it was way too small so I ordered these in an 11 and they were way too big but I ended up keeping them and getting thicker socks because it was easier than returning them again (Rockport doesn't include an easy return label). Not sure what that means for sizing but they may run large and they aren't consistent with other Rockport shoes. As for the style, I work in an office and these are a little too big and clunky for dress shoes but they are ok in the winter and look better with jeans than dress pants. They also have quite a large heel/sole that made me an inch taller than my other dress shoes which was a surprise and something I don't need at 6'3. I also thought the black leather didn't look great at first, too plasticy but that might improve over time as they break in. They have decent traction in the snow and ice and so far have been waterproof. They aren't as comfortable as I would like and I attribute that primarily to the laces. The puffy laces just won't stay tight or tied. First time walking more than ten steps from my car to my office, both shoes just came undone; it's a minor thing but very frustrating. Be prepared to tie them really tight, double-knot them or walk around with you laces untied all day. Other than that, they seem like decent shoes that will last a long time so I will have to learn to like them.

I love these shows and have owned several pairs. My only complaint is that the sole wears out long before the rest of the shoe which has lead me to another brand/style. :-(

I got this shoe after having a previous pair of Rockport shoes. My other shoes have lasted through years of wear and tear, but these were among the cheapest looking shoes I have ever seen. They felt alright, but I feared they would fall apart within a week. They were also very long for my size. They had a nice width, but had about two inches beyond the end of my toe. I returned them.

These are a very nice nubuck, but it's rather too thin and makes the shoe unstructured. The front of the shoe could be shaped a bit better--it's too rounded. But on the other hand, the shoe is so much larger than my size, and in fact my size in Rockport, that I quikly found myself tripping over the front of the shoe while walking.

Quite disappointed that the sole of these shoes wore out a lot sooner than expected and are probably better for non-paved area walking. I selected Rockport for past good performance, comfort (happy feet, yes!) but now am very disappointed after spending a lot for this pair on Zappos, then a few later saw an identical pair for less. Shoot.

Just received these and they are very tight in the width, and probably about half a size too small. I don't have a wide foot, I'll attribute some to the stiffness of the shoe, it seems to be known for it's rigidity for support from what I've read. Overall, for the cost I'm fairly disappointed with the quality. Maybe it's me but my whole world is suddenly more expensive than what I perceive it's value should be. These shoes in the brown leather style have a very cheap look to them. Returning, will probably try the Nubuck style half a size larger.

I have been wearing Rockports since the early 80s and what has kept me loyal is the fact that as soon as you try them on they are immediately comfortable. There is no "break-in" etc. Unfortunately I bought two pairs, Black and Brown of the Northfield. It rubbed/cut the back of my heal and ultimately became painful to wear. I sent the brown shoes back but am unfortunatly stuck with the black shoes since I already wore them. I had hoped they would quickly break in but no such luck. The only Rockport shoe I have ever questioned in 30 years.

Shoe looks institutional and requires a lot of breaking in. I have worn four or five times for a couple hours each, and shoe is still too stiff for all day wear. Still, I think once broken in, the shoe will have the comfort I would expect from a Rockport.

So I have been buying the shoes in this "line" for a while now, maybe 10 pairs total. For some reason Rockport changes them every year, I have no idea why they need to change a style that works but... All the other changes, different sole pattern, different toe shape, different laces, pointless but I don't mind. But this Northfield version that just came out a few weeks ago ruined what has been the best thing - they have always been roomy and wide. These ones are much tighter. All other times, I get 10.5 XW and they fit right out of the box. These ones are painful in 10 minutes, it's going to take weeks to break them in, I can tell. So from someone that has bought a ton of these I have to say this will probably be the last time. I don't know why you insist on changing the shoe design over and over Rockport.

I loved these shoes when I first bought them.. They were very comfortable and still are. The issue I have them is that the tread was completely gone after 3 months. I have bought much cheaper shoes that were great and the tread lasted longer than the seams. So I am not sure why Rockport would use such a non-durable material.

Rather fancier than I anticipated. Hurt pretty bad when I wore them to work for an 8 hour shift (standing on a concrete floor).

Very comfortable shoe - awful sole life. I have had several pairs of Rockports over the years, and typically find them very comfortable, pleasant looking, and durable. However, the lightweight, porous rubber used for the sole of these shoes has an extremely short life. Within four months of wearing them about half the time, the tread is nearly gone and the heel is rounded to the point of causing instability. I have never had a pair of shoes wear out so quickly. This might be excusable in discount specials (which I would not buy), but not for a shoe of this price.

Most uncomfortable shoe I've ever worn. I had always heard that Rockport shoes were comfortable, but this pair managed to produce pain I've not felt since my army days of forced marches. In fact, my old combat boots were far more comfortable than these shoes. On a positive note, this was my first purchase from Zappos and I must say that I was impressed. The price was good, the selection exceptional, and the shipping was phenomenally fast. My only wish is that the shoes felt as good as the service.

These shoes were not the same quality as the ones purchased in 2022. Poor quality sole, leather not the same either. Husband did not like these at all.

These are terrible shoes. Less than two years old, hardly worn, and the black cushion around the ankle on both shoes came apart. Have worn rockports for decades, these are my last pair.

These were fairly comfortable shoes for my very wide feet and looked good enough to wear to my office. Unfortunately, the trim at the upper back came loose after 7-8 wearings and looked awful.
