Average... I am an avid runner. I run both sprints and distance. Having owned both these shoes, the 990's, and a variety of other runner shoes, I can safely say that if you are buying a pair of shoes to run in, do not go with the M587's. They just don't offer enough lateral support that is needed. Also, the sole is enormous, which makes for a kind of awkward shoe. Finally, they just don’t fit the way the 990's did. They are not as snug, and they roll out easily. If you are buying a running shoe, I would definitely go with the Asics Gel-Kayano, a much better shoe all around.

Upon opening the box and trying these shoes on, I returned them. Shoes are very wide for a "B".I would need at least two pairs of socks to make these work. Excellent customer service at Zappos.

I bought these on a recommendation... ...and I sort of regret it. I got the M587 for walking and standing all day at work. At 270, I'm pretty heavy, and I have a very pronounced heel strike when I walk, but these absolutely have to be the hardest, most unforgiving athletic shoes I have ever worn. The width and size were pretty much perfect (in fact, these are the widest shoes I have ever found--I ordered a 4E, but these felt wider), but I just can't get over that silly "rollbar" thing NB puts in the heel. It may as well be made of steel. I have owned many pairs of NB's over the past few years and I have liked most and loved a couple, but these shoes were just not right for me at all. I'll be avoiding anything with the "rollbar" in the future.

I wore my NB Men's 6.5 4E M587 running shoes for something over a year. I have worn NB running shoes since January, 1969 when they used Ripple soles which lasted only a few months in my then mile a day routine. These shoes are not up to NB standards though I was glad to get them due to my rare size requirements. They were hard, inflexible, and broke down in a novel way for me. I finally figured out that the reason my orthotic was pressing on my arch was because the foot bed had caved in under my heel into what appeared to be a hollow space. I ordered a second pair but will return them since I have found others. I still like New Balance and Zappos but hope I don't have to use this M587 again.

Expensive shoe... not worth it - I received these shoes and they have a strong ortho appearance not readily apparent in the photos. The heels are already compressing and giving out and making squeaking noises when I walk. I'd recommend a different New Balance. I'm still a fan, just not of the M587. It was not money well spent.

I had a problem finding my size at several other providers on the web. When I first visited the Zappos website they indicated they were out of stock on them too. However, they had the provision for leaving a message asking them to advise me when they did get them in stock. It was about a week later when I got an email from Zappos letting me know they found just the right size for me. I purchased two pairs "just in case". They arrived in just 3 or 4 days. I am very satisfied with Zappos and they will be the first place I go for running shoes in the future!

"Made in USA" is the reason I searched these yrs ago.. I have been wearing a pair for quite a few years. They've held up well. Last month I ordered another pair. They fit perfect. I'm sz 9, they're sz 9. Same o w/width. They last, as I have the miles on them to say so. I am flat footed, so I can't rate the arch support. I've always worn on arch with a steel or hard synthetic shank. With that, Yes they keep my ankles laterally & my knee doesn't come out.. W/proper support particular to me, they have very good arch support. Let me know if you wear out your pair... I can't.

I think these are great shoes. I got these in size 6½EEEE. It is wonderful to have the option of shoes in my size and the opportunity to fine-tune the fit.

Finally found a size 14 narrow that is not too brightly colored! Thank you Zappos, you are such a great organization! I have exercised in these a lot and they felt good right away.

A classic, very much in the New Balance tradition. Better fitting than newer New Balance models, particularly in the toe box, but a little heavier as well.

Excellent all around shoe. I drag race for a hobby and am on feet all day these shoes fit the bill. I always try to keep an extra pair on hand.

I wear size 13 4E so I always look for a shoe that has the SL-2 last. I walk 20-30 miles a week. These are much better than my last pair of NB's, which were 1540's. I like these as much as the discontinued 1012's. Great shoe.

When I retired I weighed 333 lbs. Hurt to walk. Got the NB587 and gradually built up to five miles a day. (about a years time). Now I weigh around 200 lbs. Bought these shoes locally. Store stopped carrying them. Tried other shoes, but discovered Zappos carried this shoe. Wish I had eight years ago. Better price, great service,fast delivery. No brainer here. Shoes,socks, and even a rice cooker! Very satisfied.

Bought these shoes for my sweetie's birthday...he absolutely loves these shoes! He says, "They are Heaven!"

This is an excellent shoe for running or walking. It is the best cushioned shoe I have ever worn. The only negative is, it runs wide. Even though I ordered a narrow, the laceup is close to meeting and the material in top front shows creasing. I thought about sending them back, but they are just too comfortable. Zappos service is great - about 4 days with free shipping.

Very comfortable and helps with my plantar fasciitis. I use orthotics and they fit well in the shoe.

My husband has foot issues and new balance shoes are recommended for him and especially due to they way it is built. We used to buy them in stores but when they were no longer available we tried Zappos and there they were! We love Zappos - great customer service, no shipping, speedy delivery, etc. His size is sometimes not in-stock and the back order system is great. We have another pair on back order now! Thanks Zappos!

I really like the great support that this shoe gives me. Mt left foot and ankle pronate and I was having trouble with my left knee and left SI joint. These shoes have made a difference. I use these shoes to play pickleball, I do find these shoes a little heavy, but would not stop me from buying another pair. The shoes seem just a little wide for me, my next pair, I will try a narrow if I can find them.

I purchased this pair of sneakers for my husband who complained of back pain after jogging. He has been using them for a month now and reported having no back pain. He loves the sneakers! He has been wearing them everywhere for comfort.

My wife introduced me to this web site. I ordered a pair of NB M587 and got exactly what I ordered. I have a walking problem and the NB M587 is the only shoe (that I know of) that will work for me.

These shoes are great for people who don't have the perfect running style. When I run I land on the outside of my foot and these cushion my foot and help with stability. I wish they could keep them in stock when I need them!

m587 - This is the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned, but not my first pair. In fact I have bought this same shoe three straight times. I first heard about New Balance from my aunt and uncle who are in the restaurant business and stay on their feet non-stop. They recommended NB and I have never looked back.

Terrific - I ordered this shoe because I have a heel spur. I searched Google to find out what shoes support my condition. New Balance was the brand and the 587 is the perfect shoe. I have not had any pain in my foot since I purchased the 587.

The perfect shoe - I have a love affair with these shoes; I have bought it three times in the past 10 years. It's extraordinarily comfortable, durable and retro-stylish---everything you could want in a sneaker. And as a person who is a bit of a shoe addict, this is the *only* one I wear incessantly.
