My husband has been a long time fan of wearing Doc Marten Boots because of its durability and elegance; that's why he ordered these boots for me as his surprise gift. I got these boot here in Zappos last October. When I first fit these boots, I find it so stiff and I can't almost lace it all the way to my knees because the lace is just enough. I hope the lace is a little bit longer because I have a big calves. I need to apply at least 4 times of Dr. Marten Wonder Balsam to help breaking it. Now, the leather is started to break and almost shape my leg when I am wearing it and I can almost lace it up now. I can wear it over my skinny jeans, it is good for walking! These are our fourth order here! Thank you for the fast delivery and good service!

Different fit, but great look and feel - Though I have some more "regular" size 9 Docs purchased from another retailer (softer leather, less than 12 holes) which fit my 9.5 size feet, the 9663 models required me to go a size up rather than down for fit. After getting the size 10 replacement (thank you Zappos for a hassle-free--and free!!--return/exchange process), the break in period began. After wearing them for a few hours at a stretch for a few days, flexing my ankles and using some leather conditioner (Lexol works just fine), they are feeling more supple and look great. Figure on a good 3-4 minutes for lacing each one though!

Cool boots, but not for the thick calved - I got these boots as a graduation present, and I picked this pair since I’ve always wanted a pair of knee high boots. Turns out my calves are too fat for them to lace up all the way and not look stupid (I tried lacing them up with longer laces, but the tongue was not wide enough and my leg showed through the sides... not very attractive). Otherwise I loved them. They fit really well in the foot and looked great. But I’m going to have to send them back, since they just don't work with my chunk-o calves. I guess knee high boots just aren't for me. The boots were ordered on Friday and I got them on Monday, so hooray for Zappos' speedy service! I’ll definitely consider ordering from Zappos again.

Breaking in - I love the look and the quality of these boots (although the laces were too short for my fat calves) but breaking them in was a MAJOR chore. The heels are made for sturdy, not comfort, and I got some bad blisters (even wearing thick socks) that put me back a few days in wearing them. I do really like the look and durability, though, and I wear them everywhere now, from horseback riding to class.

Very sexy (and yes, if you're narrow, you can wear them)! These boots are very sexy!! Men notice them immediately. What 30-something single woman doesn't like that? They look great with a long skirt, making them great for the office, provided you don't work in a button-down environment. Other reviewers mentioned problems breaking them in. I bought some liquid leather softener and that worked like a charm. (You'll need to put it on the inside of the boot; it won't go through the coating on the outside.) I also wore thick socks. As the headline mentioned, I'm a narrow. The laces allow me to get a snug fit around the heel (my problem area). I also got the Dr. Marten's shoe balsam, which is great for shining up the boots and other shoes. I'd recommend buying Dr. Marten's insoles (I got them from the Dr. Marten's website. Maybe Zappos will add them?). They add extra arch support and make the boots super comfortable.

Sexy Sexy Sexy - These boots look so sexy on with skirts, shorts, & dresses. I have not been able to break them in. I'm gonna sand paper them down. I know no pain, no gain but , may have to cheat and take them to leather worker. I want them to be so broke in that the shaft falls when standed up. Overall, these are my favorites!!!!!! Though I do still have a blister.

Botas Negras - Summary: Great with thick socks!!! Masochism without. =( Preface: I was looking for a good boot for riding motorcycles and wanted Docs. Review: I'm 6'1" and have a 17 inch circumference 14 inches up on my leg. There was concern about these not fitting properly but with reassurance from Zappos customer support I got them. Shipping was quick and I immediately got them on. I discovered that these boot require thick long socks like the socks used in soccer, which is the type I picked up. NOTE: Thick socks. With thin socks the leather just above the heel will roll inward and rub which is very uncomfortable. Normal uses: riding a sport bike and driving 5 speed compact car. With thick socks these things are great but once you have a thin pair on, you'll remember not to do that again. With a thin pair of socks, I tried tight lacing and loose. Loose was the best in this case. CONs: laces are barely long enough (have concerns regarding longevity) and the lacing is obviously time-consuming.

Tough, rugged, kick a** boots. I love these boots, especially the ritual of lacing the 20 eyelets! I've had them for about two years, took a little while to break them in, they were a bit stiff at first, but I never got any blisters from them. Highly recommended.

The shoes that look great but hurt your heals like HELL!!!! These shoes look so good on but after awhile they stretch and give you blisters on your heels.

Nice boots - The laces could be longer and it would be nice if they came in an extra wide, but overall I'm very pleased with them.

Boots - I have always wanted a pair of these they're pretty comfortable. They're very, very durable (probably will last a lifetime) and they look awesome...

aside from the fact that leather bear's comment below makes absolutely no freaking sense, this are still some mucho nice boots. have no fear: they do not cause brain damage or illiteracy.

Wish they stayed true English - My order came super fast; thank you Zappos great service. Now about the boots, I have Doc's from 95 & 98 in my closet, yes they are worn but still look good and wearable. (shoe polish is my friend.) This pair although good looking I find the lip (which is long) is verrrry thin and they didn't do anybody a favour with their new soles pretty sure these will be gone before the other ones sad to say. But will enjoy them for what they are worth.

This is the boot that I've always wanted and finally did, but I was disappointed. The leather looks cheap up close. The opening was also strange because it did not close around my leg properly because the leather was so stiff, although this may be due to the fact that the laces were not nearly long enough. I can see how, for some, this shoe could be great, but for me, it just didn't work out. I plan on returning these, and hopefully, Zappos is as helpful with their returns as they are with their purchases.

Not very happy with the boots but Zappos is fantastic - Zappos service and shipping is superb! The boots on the other hand....well... I could not wait for my new boots to arrive. They look fantastic and are comfortable enough to wear but they have a terrible squeaking noise when I walk. They seem to be made from very cheap leather. It’s like a cheap leather coating that just does not soften up. I have tall leather riding boots that are made of real supple leather and I can soften them up and using the same secrets on these boots it just does not work. I keep these in my closet and I love looking at them and imagining how perfect they would be if I could wear them!!!

I love Dr. Martens, but not these boots! These boots never started feeling comfortable and never stopped hurting! The upper leather of the boots is really stiff and didn't really "mold" to fit my legs. Especially the tongue! Ouch! And that tongue never would stay in place and would slide to the side.

Dr Martens boots - I am previous customer of Zappos and I would like to mention that zappos has great service. However, when it comes to this shoe, I wouldn't reccomend it. I didn't purchase this shoe from the zappos website but recieved them from another Dr Martens site and I would like to say that I too were dissapointed. The shoe material feels like a cheap plastic which I didn't expect. I don't know what happened but these dr martens look nice, but the overall material of the shoe is not sturdy like other dr marten boots nor do they appear like they'll last a long time.

Hey - Did I get different boots from all the other reviewers? These are my 6th pair of Docs boots in 12 years (11th pair of Docs total), and I couldn't be much more disappointed. This awful leather is like plastic and isn't breaking in without cracking (and I know my stuff about boots.) If these weren't such totally hot, wicked kicks I would have returned them. The construction is great, just like all Dr Martens, but this leather is miserable. I finally took fine sandpaper to them and sanded the plastic coating off the leather (which crumbled off in white flakes) to get down to the real leather where they can absorb some conditioners, soften up, and hopefully break in. I want a pair of these boots in the grizzly or greasy finish instead of this stiff shiny plastic coating that these had.
