Comfortable Boot for the Hard Core - I have been breaking this boot in slowly for about three weeks now and they feel great. Right out of the box, the fit was very good, although I recommend wearing thick boot socks with them, such as the calf-high Thorlo's. I also recommend a good leather conditioner followed by a preservative once a week for the first three or four weeks. The leather is very stiff and may pinch a bit 'til they're worn in. Other than that, I still get looks and compliments from co-workers. Go for it!

The Best Shoe on the Planet - I have to say this is the best shoe ever. I bought my first pair of Doc's when I was in high school and have been hooked ever since. I got into the 20 eyes when I was going through my goth phase. I'm over that, but they come handy working in security. My first 20 eyes were ruined due to snow and rain because I didn't weather treat them. I'm ordering these and they will be treated. Overall the shoe is fantastic, but breaking the shoe in is torture. My heels were suffering big time. But once you break them in you won't want to wear any other shoe in your closet.

Finally found them - I’ve been looking for these for a while and I’m glad I found them. I love the feel of Dr. Marten’s boots. They are 1 of the only 2 types of boots I buy.

The best money can buy - This boot is just about the top of it's kind, the tallest, best leather, boot Dr. M's makes. Hard to break in at first, but years of wear are ahead of you. I bought these for my husband to ride his motorcycle because they come up high enough to protect the lower leg from burns, road debris, and other probable nasties. Suitable for men because it features the orginal tread pattern, without the X's or the high heel.

Hot boots for hot people - These boots are great looking, fun to wear. Turn a ton of heads. I wear them to the office, and them out clubing at night. They look good with jeans, or shorts. They are just great boots.

Tight laced - I have worn Doc Martens boots from being a young boy, about age 5. They were ankle boots. It all started because I used to kick off shoes so my parents put me in Doc marten boots which couldn't be kicked off. I think my parents liked to see me in boots and from that first pair I was not allowed any other footwear other than Doc martens boots. As I got older my parents brought new boots which gradually got higher up the leg and tighter laced. I did have one pair of trainers that I wore for games at school, but apart from these I was booted all the time. By the age of 11 I was in ten eyelet Docs which I had to lace tight to the top eyelets. I always had two pairs, one pair for school and play and the other for best. I then progressed to 14 eyelet boots by the age of 12. On outgrowing these just turning 13 years old, a teenager. My parents purcased the9663 series with the 20 eyelet high fastening. These felt really strange at first the feeling of my legs being encased to just below the knees and I was still made to tight lace them to the very tops. At first I found it difficult to walk as they were very stiff but now they are very comfortable. I wear them all the time, even on holidays, not having any other footwear.

I own the predisesor to this boot, the 1962. I've had them for 5 years now, since then I've come to love Doc's and the long period it takes to break them in. You'd have to own these boots to understand what people mean when they speak of them. I now have 9 pairs (2-14eye, 1-8eye, 2-20eye, 4-4eye). So take it from me, these boots last FOREVER!

Great shoes if you have the right size! I thought that a size 8 would fit me because some of my shoes are 8.5 (I recently bought a pair of size 9 tennis shoes though). At first I thought they fit but then I walked in them more and in the back of the boot the leather kept poking my ankle. I thought I'd get used to it and I had to break them in but it's just ridiculous. They gave me blisters so I guess I needed the size 9! Now I am trying to sell my size 8 so I can buy a size 9.

For the DOC connoisseur- Overall these boots rock!! However, I have extremeley small ankles, so to lace these regular is impossible. I had to ladder lace them to get them on without completeley unlacing them. Now, if I could just fine red round laces long enough.

Kick A** Boots that look great too!! I've now purchased my third pair of these and will buy another when needed. They are kick a**, look good, and (believe it or not) go with almost anything! I work conservative during the week, and then either "leather" or "punk it" (or a combination) when not on the job. Never had a transition problem. Well worth it. I'd suggest the 14 eyelets if you aren't sure about the 20's.

Leather Bear's right :) I sell shoes, and the best way to keeping your leather looking and feeling its best is to give it some leather lube. Its kinda like skin, give it some lotion to keep it from drying out. :)

I have the previous version of these 20-eyes, the 1420Z, replaced by the 9663, and it has a little "bulge" thing in the back of the boot just above the ankle. Makes it easier to take the boot on and off because your heel can go right through it with ease, without lacing and unlacing every time. Don't know if these 9663's have it though. All that aside, Dr. Martens are a great investment. I wear them with casual skirts to show off the 20 eyelets and go toward the "punk" side of my wardrobe; I wear them with pants to be more conservative. I work in I.T. at a small college, and I'm often walking all over the place or carrying heavy monitors or printers. I had never known stability or shock absorption until I had to carry heavy things with these Docs on my feet, and I was instantly in love.

The Prince of Punk! If you don't ever buy any Doc's, THESE ARE A MUST, but you have to keep them highly shined! I know this is hard for some of you, but a shiny boot is a boss boot that will last longer AND be easier on the feet! I know, I've worn them for 36 hours and NOT ONCE did I feel any pain! Save the bread & buy the best!

The boots are very comfortable. For the most part I am happy with my purchase. The three things I don't like are: 1)They are made overseas (my old Docs were made in England, and made much sturdier) and 2)They no longer have speed laces (so it takes forever to put them on) and 3)The eyelets are not put in right and keep wrecking the shoe laces (grommets done poorly-made overseas seems to be the culprit again). It is not fun to get English boots and see that they too have sold out to overseas. I am searching and searching for speed lace eyelets so I can replace the ones on my boots.

Very dramatic boots, look great. I agree with others that it takes about 10 minutes to lace up. They also take awhile to break in, the leather is pretty stiff. Mine still aren’t totally broken in. I encountered blisters and skin scraps on the Achilles tendon area of my foot. The shoe laces should be a couple inches longer. By the time they are laced up, there is not much left to tie a bow. A pull strap on the top back of the boot would also help when pulling the boot on. Still, a great looking boot, but expect a time commitment when lacing them up and breaking them in.

My husband has been a long time fan of wearing Doc Marten Boots because of its durability and elegance; that's why he ordered these boots for me as his surprise gift. I got these boot here in Zappos last October. When I first fit these boots, I find it so stiff and I can't almost lace it all the way to my knees because the lace is just enough. I hope the lace is a little bit longer because I have a big calves. I need to apply at least 4 times of Dr. Marten Wonder Balsam to help breaking it. Now, the leather is started to break and almost shape my leg when I am wearing it and I can almost lace it up now. I can wear it over my skinny jeans, it is good for walking! These are our fourth order here! Thank you for the fast delivery and good service!

Different fit, but great look and feel - Though I have some more "regular" size 9 Docs purchased from another retailer (softer leather, less than 12 holes) which fit my 9.5 size feet, the 9663 models required me to go a size up rather than down for fit. After getting the size 10 replacement (thank you Zappos for a hassle-free--and free!!--return/exchange process), the break in period began. After wearing them for a few hours at a stretch for a few days, flexing my ankles and using some leather conditioner (Lexol works just fine), they are feeling more supple and look great. Figure on a good 3-4 minutes for lacing each one though!

Cool boots, but not for the thick calved - I got these boots as a graduation present, and I picked this pair since I’ve always wanted a pair of knee high boots. Turns out my calves are too fat for them to lace up all the way and not look stupid (I tried lacing them up with longer laces, but the tongue was not wide enough and my leg showed through the sides... not very attractive). Otherwise I loved them. They fit really well in the foot and looked great. But I’m going to have to send them back, since they just don't work with my chunk-o calves. I guess knee high boots just aren't for me. The boots were ordered on Friday and I got them on Monday, so hooray for Zappos' speedy service! I’ll definitely consider ordering from Zappos again.

Breaking in - I love the look and the quality of these boots (although the laces were too short for my fat calves) but breaking them in was a MAJOR chore. The heels are made for sturdy, not comfort, and I got some bad blisters (even wearing thick socks) that put me back a few days in wearing them. I do really like the look and durability, though, and I wear them everywhere now, from horseback riding to class.

Very sexy (and yes, if you're narrow, you can wear them)! These boots are very sexy!! Men notice them immediately. What 30-something single woman doesn't like that? They look great with a long skirt, making them great for the office, provided you don't work in a button-down environment. Other reviewers mentioned problems breaking them in. I bought some liquid leather softener and that worked like a charm. (You'll need to put it on the inside of the boot; it won't go through the coating on the outside.) I also wore thick socks. As the headline mentioned, I'm a narrow. The laces allow me to get a snug fit around the heel (my problem area). I also got the Dr. Marten's shoe balsam, which is great for shining up the boots and other shoes. I'd recommend buying Dr. Marten's insoles (I got them from the Dr. Marten's website. Maybe Zappos will add them?). They add extra arch support and make the boots super comfortable.
