Can the laces be tightened

They cannot be tightened. They are supposed to fit like a slip-on loafer type shoe, the elastic laces are there for style and to help them fit a bit more fitted like than a standard loafer.

I am returning these shoes. I have a very narrow foot and need a good solid arch support and a solid footing! Normally, "narrow" shoes are too wide! This shoe was so uncomfortable and narrow with not enough toe room. My foot really felt squished! and on top of that the heel and sole narrowed, placing more weight on the center of the foot and giving a very unstable feeling to the shoe. Totally uncomfortable!! For Trotters? Not good.
