Ruffwear

Ruffwear Logo
Ruff Wear. In the summer of 1992, while mountain biking in the Los Padres National Forest with friends and their dog, Ruff Wear founder and president Patrick Kruse met with a challenge that sparked a series of innovations in gear for dogs on the go.

While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.

Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.

In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.

Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.

"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."

"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

This is a high quality collar but the metal clasp is stiff and difficult to open. If you have arthritis or similar difficulties, look elsewhere.

Bought this puffy in medium for our 6 year old female Doberman. Have had previous difficulties finding outerwear that fits our dog's wide chest and narrow waist. This Ruffwear puffy fits her perfectly through the belly without sagging and the stretchy panel reduces underarm chafe on the run. Adding an offset zipper eliminates the anxiety of pulling something over our dog's head. The color (larkspur purple) is cute without being pink. Our dog really seems to be comfortable in this vest!

When I measured my little Chihuahua she was 17". I didn't want the sweater tight so I ordered the XS. I had to send it back and exchange it for an XXS. I haven't used it yet but it fits her really good.

Bought this in XXS along with the Fergie and Powder Hound for our rescue chihuahua. Though they could be a tad smaller, they still fit well enough to keep them all. I've found that other XXS apparel items from the manufacturer that don't have this type of underside are too large and have larger-dog sized hardware. The Blue Moon color is a little darker than the pic. Very tasteful!

These have been excellent for our elderly arthritic dog who could not get her legs organized under her on the slippy wood and linoleum floors. Gives her confidence to move around wherever she needs to. Was not as difficult to get her into these because they're short, and they stay on well.

Ruffwear is such a great brand! I’ve had so many issues with other brands not fitting my Great Dane. Ruffwear doesn’t discriminate against large dogs! This collar actually fits her but doesn’t choke her. I only buy Ruffwear for all my dogs because of the awesome quality.

The jacket seems decent quality, but the buckles feel a little flimsy. I was disappointed that there isn’t an opening in the back to attach the leash to my dog’s harness, but I’m hoping there is some way to make it work because collars don’t work well on my hound. My dog was at the very low end of the medium and the very high end of the small, and I ordered the medium. It fits how I would imagine it should fit, if not the tiniest bit too long.

Doggy wear is so hard when you have a dog with a long body. My dog is a corgi/chihuaha mix so most clothing is too wide and too short. The fit of this jacket is long enough and only a little bit baggy around the torso. It seems to work quite well but when I go for a long walk, I take a bottle of ice water to wet the jacket periodically.

In preparation of getting our new puppy, I researched many types of leashes. Some vets in our area don’t allow retractable leashes in their office; slip leashes aren’t for regular use; and I’ve seen too many garden-variety leashes with broken clips and frayed lines. When I saw this leash, it cast all those concerns aside. I chose the wider rope and it feels like serious business. The locking carabiner tells me my little guy isn’t going anywhere! And the handle is so human-friendly; it’s super squeezable and it fits the inside curve of my hand. My only criticism: offer more colors and lengths. But that doesn’t have a thing to do with how effective and satisfying this leash is so far.

Our pup is a 40-lb mixed breed dog with a pretty deep chest. I measured her and ordered the XS after checking the Ruffwear sizing chart. It fits perfectly and covers her from neck to the base of her tail. I especially like how much coverage there is on her chest because it keeps her cleaner when she goes into the grass. We used it last week when we had rain 5 days in a row and it worked like a charm!

This is an insane price for a life vest for a dog! Originally I purchased an Outward Hound life vest for a quarter of the price. My 7 month old French bulldog could not go down off of our front steps without tipping over. I did some research, and the Ruffwear vest seemed like the best choice. It killed me to spend the money, but I’m glad I did. You hardly know she is wearing it by the way she gets around. It was well worth the money. The size chart was spot on. She measured 20” around the biggest part of her chest. The XS fits perfect with room to grow.

I've tried a few no-pull harnesses and this one is by far the best. It uses quality materials that will last. The sizing works as a L/XL for an 80+ lb German Shepherd with clearance for front legs so there's no chafing. The harness does twist when the dog pulls like all other front attachment harnesses but it works and that is all that matters. I'd like to see an even more robust, much larger version in the future specifically for big dogs with an integrated handle that could be even better for trail use but this is my recommended no-pull harness right now. It doesn't replace training but if you were looking for a no-pull harness this is your best bet.

I'm really enjoying this harness on my 25lb shiba inu. The bright blue color is really nice, and I appreciate that the harness does not shift from side to side. I use the handle to lift him sometimes on our hikes, and he is relaxed and tolerant during those moments. I ordered both a S and a XS because I wanted the extra length that the S would offer, but I wasn't sure if it would be too big in terms of the girth and waist straps. The S does fit my shiba inu when every strap is adjusted to the shortest length. The waist strap is borderline too close to his penis, but fortunately my dog is pretty good at aiming and does not soil the strap when he pees. (Yes, I checked.) Overall, I'm happy with the fit of the S and will be returning the XS. My dog's measurements: 25lb., 21 inch girth, long and lean.

This leash is not for dogs who enjoying pulling. After a little over a year, the bungee started to stretch out and it has continued to stretch out more and more. The leash is 3 years old now and has virtually no stretch left, it's just all stretched out. Now it is so long that whenever the dog is next to me I have to hold the leash up a little or she will step right over it and get her legs tangled. We had a previous version of the leash (bought 6 years ago) back when they made blue and used a different type of bungee, that leash is still in great shape and the bungee still works great. If your dog only occasionally stretches the bungee, you will probably be fine, however, if your dog likes to pull then this bungee WILL stretch out on you.

Ruffwear is a wonderful brand and I have yet to be disappointed by the products. However, in this case the customers should be warned that they may receive a product slightly different than the one pictured. I received an older version. It has a different buckle that makes it much more difficult to wear around the waist. The version I have also can not be used as a tie out (which I know is not the purpose, but it would be handy to use for a minute or two when I need my hands to be free).

The medium fits my 55lb greyhound (she's a small one) nearly perfectly. The only fit problem is that it pulls a tad between her front legs; if the leg holes were just a bit farther apart she wouldn't even know she is wearing it. But as it is, she is reluctant to run in this sweater because she hates things under her legs. It will be just fine for keeping her warmer while we camp in the summer though.
