Ruffwear

Ruffwear Logo
Ruff Wear. In the summer of 1992, while mountain biking in the Los Padres National Forest with friends and their dog, Ruff Wear founder and president Patrick Kruse met with a challenge that sparked a series of innovations in gear for dogs on the go.

While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.

Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.

In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.

Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.

"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."

"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

I was hoping these boots would be THE ONES ... and they were! I'm happy that Zappos had the size we needed because they were out of stock in her size on the RuffWear site and I needed them ASAP. Ellie is healing from "interdigital furuncles" and her front paws are quite sensitive. When she began limping on hikes, I knew I needed to get her high quality boots that fit right and allowed her to be active without affecting her gait. I LOVE these boots. They are just right in every way. I will order another pair for her back paws in case we need them for hot terrain or pavement this summer. She measured 2.5 for her front paws, so I sized down to 2.25 and they fit perfectly. Her back paws will most likely be a 2.00. I will also probably order a back-up pair for her front paws in case one gets lost on a journey! I love Ruffwear ... Ellie has 3 Front Range harnesses from RuffWear and they have all held-up very well. I have confidence that these boots will hold-up just as well. I highly recommend!!

So far so good! Our 45-pound hound mix is a power chewer and hasn’t destroyed it yet. She loves to catch it in the air and I like that her teeth can’t puncture it. Nice and lightweight too.

I agree with the other reviewers that the neck adjustment runs a bit too large. My dog's girth is 19 1/2" and she weighs 21 lbs. I got XS. The girth fits perfect. I set the neck the smallest setting and it is still loose but tight enough that there is no way she will wiggle out. I have Ruffwear front range harnesses too and they have the exact same issue but they work fine for my dog even though the neck part is a bit loose for her. I got the Hi & Lite harness because it is much cooler than the front range harness (no padding, much lighter fabric). It is still comfortable and does not irritate my dog's skin (she has sensitive skin). The color (I got orange) is so cute and highly visible that it will keep my dog safe! If the neck size is not an issue for your dog, this is a great harness! I always have great experiences with Ruffwear and I was excited that Zappos was selling them.

I wanted a more comfortable harness for my baby. The chest pad comes too far and presses the bottom of his throat which chokes. The straps around the abdominal section kept loosening which allowed the chest to ride up and choke him more. My dog is deaf so I need something safe and secure for training and maintaining him without negative impact. I would not recommend this harness.

This harness is almost perfect. My dog's chest girth was right on the borderline between 2 sizes. I called Ruffwear and they suggested I size up so I bought both sizes from Zappos so that I could easily return the one that didn't fit. For my dog, the smaller size was right so I recommend sizing down if your dog is right on the line between sizes. This harness has softer fabric on the inside than most harnesses that I have seen which is nice for my dog with sensitive skin. The harness is very easy to adjust for size and easy to put on and take off. I highly recommend it. My only complaint is that if my dog tries to lay down or bend his head down to sniff, the chest fabric pushes up on his throat and looks uncomfortable. I think if the neck was cut a little lower it would be more comfortable for him.

Our dog has been wearing this collar for over 2 years now. She is high energy and hard on things but the collar and matching leash are both excellent quality and have held up well. She has a little head and big neck/body so normal collars slip right off. Also, do not love the idea of using a full choke collar so this was a good choice.

The fit and size are great, and quality too is very good. Could be a bit thicker, just a little. I got this to replace a thick leather belt-style collar, padded that made my dog appear too male, when she is a female and not at all aggressive only defending (a female doberman with normal ears). Compared to it, which was too heavy and thick but mostly heavy - the weight of this collar is very light, maybe a little too light for a large dog? Could be thicker for a larger dogs, I would like it to be, but the fabric weave is soft and still seems durable. For the price it is too little collar too, again a bit. I purchased at the same time two collars from another company online, very similar just no daisy's, same style, still to be tried out though they seem more durable. Both the former collar (big brown leather described above &!& this new collar are still able to be pulled over my dog's big doberman head if not "notched" just so. This one with no notches, still stretched over her head and slipped off with a tug at a certain tightness. That is my problem, finding the right spot - and getting it to hold on it's own, over time: everything stretches out and slips off my dog's head - IF & WHEN she pulls hard enough because she sees something she really wants to chase after.

My dog isn't much of a chewer, and she managed to loosen this by herself, take it off, and chew it to pieces. In her defense, it looks a lot like a rope toy that she has. It also seems a little dangerous that there's no way to unclip it if needed.

I love the spring part!!!! My dog loves picking up weird stuff on the street, so I used to pull the leash while walking. But do not have to worry anymore. She tries to resist and give up. It does not look dangerous at all and I can give her more space since I chose the long version. We will go for a walk to the mountain!!!!

Last year we bought our first Ruffwear product, a harness for our Havanese, and were so impressed by the quality we thought we’d try the collar this time. We’re glad we did. Unlike her previous one-color, stiff collar, this one is supple with a multi-color design that coordinates well with her pink harness. And the quality is evident, in the anodized aluminum V-ring and the thoughtfulness in providing a separate tag attachment point and silicone silencer. The small size fits her perfectly, with no adjustment needed, in our case. The satisfaction of having the best is well worth paying a few dollars more.

I have a 64-lb Greyhound and I wanted a fleece-lined but somewhat waterproof coat for her, and this ended up being the perfect item! The measurements are a bit weird; she's a large in other Ruffwear coats but I had to return the large in this and get a medium instead. But overall, this coat is great for her during the winter or on rainy days. I do wish Ruffwear had a bit more color options, including greens like they used to years ago, but I don't think my dog minds.

My dog has about 7 different RuffWear coats (I'm a HUGE fan!). They all fit him very well, but sadly this one does not. The length on top of his back/hips is great, but the underbelly portion is too long and covers his weiner (can't pee while wearing this coat without peeing on the coat). I will have to return it.
