Ruffwear

Ruffwear Logo
Ruff Wear. In the summer of 1992, while mountain biking in the Los Padres National Forest with friends and their dog, Ruff Wear founder and president Patrick Kruse met with a challenge that sparked a series of innovations in gear for dogs on the go.

While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.

Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.

In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.

Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.

"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."

"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

LOVE this, it’s our second one. Fits my dog like a glove, and she looks so darn stylin’ in the pink! The loop for connecting a leash on the back is expertly placed, and this harness is very adjustable. We get home from a hike and she doesn’t seem to notice that she’s still wearing it. A sure sign of comfort.

I have a hound mix rescued from the pound last summer. She has the shortest sparsest fur. She is also broad chested, long torsoed with narrow flanks and waist, and thick-necked. Hard girl to fit! But this does the job! She is very active and needs protection from the cold. This is a great jacket that fits well (you get the hang of the zipper really quickly. The material on the quilted part is rather fragile though. Ours is ripped from running in the woods, but I've sewed and patched it. Highly recommend this manufacturer for dog-clothing.

gorgeous martingale-style collar that seem very comfy on our pulling dogs—like a gentle reminder. there’s a plastic clasp, too, that makes me feel like it would be less dangerous in the wild in case they ever got out on their own.

The Cooler Harness worked well for short, hot hikes here in Texas and I thought that it was going to be a great solution for our chocolate lab - but the velcro closers caused severe chaffing and bleeding on long distance packing. The velcro closers rub on the inside of the fore legs during packing trips. One of our labs tired to chew through the Roughwear pack straps due to discomfort. *Please see photo of affected area taken after 5 days of treatment.

Ruffwear is our no-fail brand for dog gear. We have had four large doodles over the last 15 years and all of them have had a Webmaster harness and a Ruffwear leash. I can’t remember the name of the leash but it’s the one with the locking rappelling hook at the end. This harness is totally adjustable and has fit all of our dogs just right. It is padded and well made, and each harness has lasted the life of our dogs. Ruffwear is a little more expensive than some other brands, but it’s worth the price for the quality.

Jet Stream™ Cooling Vest

We love the Jet Stream! Living in Flagstaff and hiking a lot, we need this cooling vest for our pup. We have the Swamp Cooler, too, but prefer this lighter style that’s also bright and makes our dog visible when we let him off leash in our neighborhood’s private park. The fit is perfect for him as he has a deep chest and the space around the arms pits means no chafing. We get pretty dirty and the vest washes clean easily. We bought our first Jet Stream in 2018 and it lasted 3 summers, which is really impressive since we use it daily usually from June through September. Adding two photos to show the old vest (left) and the new vest (right). Great job, Ruffwear!

Our pup Luna loves her Jet Stream vest! She's a black dog in a hot climate and we struggled to keep her cool on hikes. We tried this out for the first time this past weekend, soaking it in a creek along the trail, and it worked great! It stayed damp the entire trip back to the trailhead in the hot afternoon sun. It's super lightweight when dry, so no problem to throw in my backpack, and while at first I thought it was too tight, I realized that snug fit on her back is how the vest keeps her cool. And plenty of room on her chest and full range of motion for her front legs - love those large arm holes! I highly recommend this product.

Grip Trex Pairs Boots

I have had my dogs wearing Ruffwear boots for quite a while. They are well made and stay on good once you learn how snug to wrap the Velcro strap. You want it snug enough that you cannot pull off the boot. I live in Mesa, AZ and the sidewalks and streets get very, very hot. They are flexible and the soles aren’t too thick. They come in pairs, instead of fours which seems weird, but I guess some dogs have bigger front or back feet. Also if you lose one you don’t have to buy four to get back to a full set. I also like one strap per boot. (Some boots have two and that takes more time to put on). The red looks good on Scarlett, don’t you think?

I measured the dog based on the sizing video. However, it doesn’t fit around the shoulders-even on the tightest setting it is way too big. But it doesn’t fit around the chest area.

I love Ruffwear products and have always appreciated their design and quality. But this product misses those points. It is way too short to even protect a dog against a strong sunshine. My dog is of average length. She’s not a long dog like a corgi or dogs of similar built. The girth is fine but it doesn’t work with the length. It probably will work for a bulldog or a dog of same profile.

This collar is perfect! My dog tries to squirm out of her collar each time she sees another dog because she is very social but this collar keeps her from getting out and running over to other dogs. For size reference my dog is a thick weimaraner and the 17-20" collar fits her perfectly.

The leash was very expensive compared with how lightweight the webbing that’s used for the leash. I imagine this leash is so pricey because of all the buckled and adjustability, but it really wasn’t a great leash and felt really flimsy. I mean it looked good, but functionally it wasn’t great.

I like this much better than the old martingale type (w the chain ) the chain was super heavy ! I have 4 dogs but only one has to use martingale only ( regular collars can wiggle her head out ) This was quite a relief , it has an added clip on which made it easier to put on her , it matches the new “ instant “ leash ( the only you pull a tab and it makes a 12” leash like for trails if you see someone and need to have your dog leashed quickly ) She has a lot of other collars but this one is one of my favorites! It’s super lightweight !

It’s thin and light compared to most harnesses especially ruff-wear harnesses but not at all flimsy and more than I need for my medium sized dog. Pulls on overhead and then clip on either side around the mid-section. Two things I appreciate in the design are the reflective striping around the chest and shoulders and the little pocket on the back panel. Perfect size for poop bag roll. We never leave home without them.

Basecamp™ Mat

This is utter garbage! Its not made from material that can be easily rinsed off or washed....it's a very weird, spongy type material that allows the water spillage to kind of "gel up" and get "soupy" and even moldy if left longer than a day. Washing it is a challenge because everything kind of sticks to it and scrubbing by hand just moves it around the mat. I had to spray rinse for a really long time in order to get everything to truly be removed. It's just so weird and not at all what I expected or wanted in a drip mat for my dogs bowls. I normally love Ruffwear products but this one is a NO!
