I am in law enforcement and my husband is in security. We both wear these boots. I'm on my 3rd pair in 6 years and wear them every day. I require a shoe that is supportive, which these boots provide both in the arch and the ankle. The Goretex makes the boots waterproof without sacrificing breathability. And trust me, I've tested it... I have noticed some comments regarding the zipper and being unable to get a foot in without unlacing the boot. My husband and I have never found this to be the case. I re-lace my boots every few days to ensure tightness during movement, but it's not necessary. I can always get my feet in and out using the zipper and have never had a problem with it sticking. I hope if you make this purchase you are as pleased as I have been. The only thing that could make these better is a Vibram outsole. Even so, the tread holds up decently.

These definitely run a little bit big, at least when you get up to size 12, and even using hiking socks, I was swimming in them. I suggest that if you wear a size 12 or bigger, go down a half-size to a full size. I tend to wear a 12.5 in a Brooks running shoe, a size 12 in many other shoes, but a size 12 in this shoe was a bit too big. The styling is excellent. These are a good-looking pair of shoes. They're a lot lighter than they appear. They appear to be of good build quality. The only issue I've had is a gouge in my right shoe (no fault of the shoe) after some unknown incident. So be aware that these are rugged, but not completely impervious to attack. They will, however, protect your feet, which is kind of the point.

The last pair of Bates desert combat boots I bought were the best fitting boots I thinks I've ever had. They were size 10, extra wide. I ordered the same size with these new ones and they didn't seem to come close, could barely get my foot in. Just looking at them, the length looked a little short, but the width looked totally narrow compared to other boots I've had. It seems the sizing system has changed since they started making Bates boots overseas. Otherwise, they seemed to be well made, nice looking boots. Had to return them because thee was nothing wider available.

First pair of Bates that I owned. I needed a pair of light weight boots for construction work in Fiji, where it is always hot and humid and rains a lot. After a year of use, they are still going strong. Sole has held up on concrete work, but I did rip a side of the boot on some steel, but that was my fault. After a hard rain, the boots dry out over night after removing the insoles. They have taken a beating and still going strong. I'm going to order another pair as a backup, as they are so comfortable to wear all day in the heat and grip well in the grass and soft dirt.

Fit perfect. nice light boot, lightest boot i have ever owned. only took a couple of day to brake in unlike most boots. I do a lot of walking at work and love them so far. 5 stars

Fit true to size. Look great. Look perfect with dress uniforms for military or other emergency service uniforms.

Husband likes these boots. This is the only brand and style, fit of boot he can wear for 8-10hrs of work. His feet do not ache. He bought 2 pairs to rotate through his work week. Guess they will last longer.

Perfect fit. Break in time is minimal. Very solid, great support. A very confident boot. Get other insoles (I suggest the Timberland Pros). Great boot, I love the side zip.

The sizing is the same as my old bates lights. Snug in a 10.5 EW, and without that awful toe seam the uniform boots have. For point of reference, I wear an 11.5 in asics (gel-kayano for width and stability) and an 11 in converse and vans, always going for as accurate a fit as possible, no excessive space. I also always wear superfeet blue or (more recently) gold insoles to increase vertical space at the toebox and vamp. In regards to the width, the converse/vans only get comfortable when the side rips at the pinkie knuckle on both feet. These boots seem good, though like other extra wide bates I'd have to break em in for width. With the bates lights (not for inspections) I'd soak them in the shower then stuff anything I could fit into them. These wouldn't need something that aggressive, maybe just soaking and wearing for a day, unfortunately I won't be doing that as i intend to return em :/ Upon checking them out in person I realized the whole midsole is all foam. Thats awesome for comfort and such, but I've got some nerve pain issues now that requires a thick firm sole. Once the foam begins to compress in a few short months I'm back to having pins and needles in the right side of my face. The bates lights (USMC) have rubber midsoles (think im using that nomenclature properly), and although its soft rubber that wears fairly quick, they keep me in good health. I'd really like these if not for my physical problem. Oh!! Some big points for these! Speedlacing, no zippers, and no goretex. Those are the three stipulations I've got for good boots. Speedlacing (obvious), zippers: unnecessary/potential failure/loosening, abnormal flex EX: when crouching/pushing something heavy, and GORETEX: Shoes get wet, and they dry. I don't want anything trapping in moisture/water, preventing breathing. I'm sure customers will like these if they're okay with the aesthetics and understand that the foam will compress with time, increasing impact on the heel when stepping.

Very comfortable work boot. Easy on/off with zipper. I recommend that you spray a stain protector as they do mark up easily.

These boots are precisely as described and very reasonably priced as well. The leather is subtle making them very comfortable right out of the box and they should be perfect for the purpose intended. I’m very pleased with this purchase but I continue to be impressed with the incredible customer service Zappos provides.

I got these for my husband because he had been wearing the same pair of dress shoes for the last 20 years and complained every time he had to wear his dress uniform. He normally needs a wide shoe but with these he did not. He seemed to be in a better mood by the end of the evening and didn't complain about his feet. He said they were comfortable. The tread is quite thick so I'm not sure these were really within regulation but nobody said anything.

This boot is extremely comfortable right out of the box ! I ordered a 10 2E. Perfect fit. I normally wear new boots for about an hour at a time for the first few days to break them in. Not with this boot. I put it on, started walking around and just left them on for the rest of the day. Very good support. I wore Bates boots for 26 years in LE and they were always my go to boot. Now that I am retired, I still like the look and feel of quality footwear. I think you will like them. JJP

Second time I ordered these. First was great second time get snug. Sent them back.

even though these were marked extra wide, my husband could not get his foot into the boot. He bought another pair in wide that fit perfectly.

Normally I am a size 9 1/2 so I ordered a 9 1/2 for these boots and they were too big, no problem I called Zappos and the Zappos rep was letting me know if I would like to try a smaller size or get a refund? I went for a size 9 which was surprisingly sent the next day; what great customer service. As it turned out a size 9 was still just not right, too much room in the toe box. Feeling bad I called Zappos and had another pleasant conversation with a Zappos rep who let me know that on a second return I would be given the option of a gift card or get a refund on my credit card. I chose the gift card. A few days later I called Zappos and had a third pleasant conversation with a Zappos rep and asked for a size 8 1/2. This order came the second day after my call and when I tried the boots on they fit perfect. Super comfortable and super cool looking boot. Zappos has some really great people working the order desk. Three calls and three incredibly polite Zappos phone support personnel.

These have great cushion however the shoe is very hard and not pliable and really dug into the back of my heal/ankle. They were also a little narrow in the front. I could tell it would have been a very supportive shoe if it wasn't so rigid.
Zappos Reviewer on January 30, 2019
These are probably the best boots I have ever owned they are perfect in every way with on exception I average 15000 steps a day between two jobs and in three months the sole is almost worn through and the leather has become detached from the mesh on one side this is unacceptable boots that cost $165.00 should last at least 6 months to a year I have had cheaper less comfortable boots last longer than these.

A little stiff (might break in with time) but well made and the most comfortable boots I've tried on in a long time. And they look good too.

I bought these as my primary motorcycle boots. Comfort and protection wise they are fantastic. However, they are not waterproof as advertised. They cannot withstand a 20 minute ride in the rain. For comfort and protection I recommend, for waterproofness I do not recommend.

This is my first shoe review - hopefully this is useful. The boot is awesome. with my last boots I would get home from work and kick them off with urgency. I could sleep in these boots they're so comfortable. it's like wearing running shoes with ankle support! I read a negative review about the ankle support being too cushy, but after one day you forget all about that. I had a little trouble finding the right size but that may be because of my weird foot shape. I ended up 1/2 size smaller than usual and with the extra wide option. I highly recommend these for anyone looking for boots in an urban environment.

I bought these coyote brown Bates Shock FX boots to replace a pair of Merrell boots. I use these for light hiking and going to the range. So far these are excellent boots especially if you're looking for comfortable tactical boots that you can wear all day and that aren't black. These Bates are well designed and a lot lighter than you would think from looking at the photos. They are very comfortable and easy to get on and off although maybe a little too narrow if you wear really thick wool socks. The oversized outer toe cap-front bumper is a nice feature and protects your big toe from jagged rocks and concrete. The sole is not a Vibram sole but it grips loose dirt, wet concrete and light snow nicely. I would say these boots are for temperate to hot environments. I have worn these in 90 degree to 40 degree weather and in the rain/sleet and they have kept my feet comfortable and dry and only took a few days to break in. The only negative I can think of is that the coyote brown suede upper gets dirty very easily and its a chore to brush clean. I will definitely buy another pair when these wear out but Bates is infamous for changing their designs every year.
