Osprey FlapJill Pack: I've had this backpack for six months now. Going back to grad school, I really didn't want to buy a book bag, but after lugging too many heavy textbooks to class, I succumbed. I had seen Osprey products and had always been impressed by their sturdiness, function and style, so it was a no brainer to buy this one. Definitely pricier than most, but I also use it for day hikes, so it is multi-functional. Overall, well pleased with the bag. Sturdy, comfortable straps which were a must since I walk to school. I also like the separate padded compartment where I put my laptop. Being able to change the straps is kind of fun. Quite roomy. And, I get a lot of compliments on the pack from my younger (and much cooler) classmates. Two complaints though: I would have loved a side mesh pocket to hold my water canteen. Admittedly, it would have ruined the streamlined design, but I really miss that feature. 2) While I love the flap design, the drawstring cord to close the interior can be irksome. While day hiking this is actually a good feature (nothing will fall out), but for school, I find getting folders/binders in or out of the bag to be tedious especially when I am carrying a full pack. Otherwise, though, it is a great bag.

I love the looks of this bag, the padded interior, the interchangeable colors of straps. What I don't like is the drawstring top and it's narrow opening. I'm used to bags that zip up the sides to the top allowing you to remove/add items easier with a larger opening. This top is very narrow which makes it difficult to get things out of.

I've had this backpack for about three weeks, and am really enjoying it. Pros, finally a pack that has straps that fit the width of female shoulders. I ordered 10 backpacks, and this was by far the best fit. I knew it wouldn't be the most lightweight pack--it's a little heavier than, say, a basic Jansport with no special features, but not a big deal at all. Especially given the comfortable ribs on the back. The built-in laptop sleeve means I don't need my other laptop case. Also, the chest and waist strap are just right for tightening the pack for my uphill 4 mile bike ride back from work. Cons, I wish that it came in other colors. I do think this pack is beautifully designed, but I love the orange color in the equivalent man's FlapJack pack, and wish that female products didn't necessarily entail flowers and light colors. (I know, there is the charcoal one, but I wanted some color.) Also, the long side pocket just barely fits my tall skinny water bottle OR an umbrella, but nothing else. It could be either a little larger or designed into a different shape. As others mention, the internal pocket is pretty deep and some might prefer more pocket and space divisions besides the two other small front pockets (which fit my pens, wallet, etc. very well). However, I've been enjoying the medium volume of this pack as a good reminder that I don't need to haul my entire desk to and from campus most days, which is also saving my back some stress. All in all, I highly recommend this pack!

This is a great backpack, exactly what I expected. There is plenty of padding for your laptop, pocket is off the bottom by about an inch for extra protection. There is not a ton of room for stuff other than the laptop - enough for a book and lunch maybe. Several pockets for small stuff, one on the side. My only minigripe is that I wish it would have velcro under the flap, so I could just close it without bucking, like Timbuk2 does.
Brands I'd also recommend: timbuk2
