The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Love these boots! I've been looking for vintage, warn looking boots that are great quality and happy to have found them here. These boots do run small. I usually wear a 6.5 and I couldn't even squeeze my feet into them. I exchanged them for a 7.5 and that fit just fine. I have yet to wear them and break them in to comment further.

These boots are just okay. The inside leather lining on the foot bed peels up after just one wear. I had it professionally glued back down by the shoe salon at a high end department store and it did it again two wears later. I've heard from other Frye owners that this is a common thing with Frye boots. For this price I expect more. My cheaper boots don't have this problem! C'mon Frye!

I love these boots. They are so well made. If it was not for the patience of Zappos and their great customer service I would not have them now. I first tried a 7.5 then an 8 and then I gave up. All too small and tight. But then I tried an 8.5 and that was it. They fit great. For me a full size bigger than what I normally wear was right for me. I just love them.

I'd also recommend: don't know

For some reason, this boot has a more masculine vibe in person than it does on the website. Maybe because once you strap these puppies on -- and you'll remember doing that every time because there are no zips or hooks to make the lacing quicker -- you immediately feel their solidity. They are heavy on your feet and you can see why people are always going on about how Frye's boots last forever. The dark brown is a beautiful burnished mahogany color: dark almost reddish brown topped in places by almost black. Very nice. My only concern at the moment is that my heels are rubbing up and down against the boot as I walk. I know that'll be blister city if I don't wear them in gradually.

I'd also recommend: Naot, Merrell, Rockport, Born

The distressing was ultra-cool. Very comfortable and true to size with typical Frye quality. No need to break in as in since these were comfortable out of the box. Color was exactly as shown and the Zappos service was excellent as usual.
