This boot is simply fabulous! I been searching for the perfect boot for at least 2 years, and this one hits the mark (for me) in every way. I originally got the antique leather finish, but I exchanged those for the vintage dark brown finish, which is a much richer look. I love the zipper and button details, and the top of the boot width is exactly as advertised. An excellent purchase. Thanks Zappos!

These are beautifully made. They have a comfortable footbed with some type of gel insole? It is unfortunate that this boot would be better for someone with bigger ankles or fatter/ thicker calves.

Color (Dark Vintage Brown), quality, style - everything is perfect with these boots except the calf width which was too wide for my taste. If you have fuller calves, then these boots are definitely worth the money. If you have slimmer calves, these may not make the cut.

These boots are amazing! I bought Frye boots a while ago (1999) and they were amazing too. Then I bought two pairs of Frye (last year and two years ago) that were less impressive from a quality standpoint. These new boots are terrific, excellent quality. Made in Mexico, which may be the reason for the improvement? Anyway, I always have taken a 7 in Frye boots and I had to return these for 7.5. The footbed was too tight.

About Frye
Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I have been looking for a simple tall black boot without a lot of hardware or decoration, made of quality materials (eg, no synthetic lining or sole). Unfortunately, my calves are "athletic" and although I could zip and close these boots, doing so with jeans tucked in was really tight. I'm not sure how much they can be stretched due to the zipper closure. If you have slim to average calves, these will be fantastic!

These are absolutely fabulous boots. I got them in the gray color - more of a dark gray/brown. Very unique color indeed. Goes with black and brown and jeans very well. There is a bit of room in the ankle area where it bags a bit if you plan to wear them with tights or leggings. But the bagginess is there to allow room for jeans, so you don't get the circulation cut-off around the ankle because you had to fold your jeans into the boots. You do have to unbutton both the top and bottom buttons to get the boots on and off properly, otherwise it is a very tight if not impossible fit to get your foot into the foot-bed. I am usually a 7.5 or 7 in sandals etc. I had to exchange the 7.5 for a 7. I have super skinny calves and ankles and these fit wonderfully. There is still a bit of room throughout the shaft of the boot, but it isn't bad. The foot-bed has some padding, nothing like born boots but they are comfortable enough. These will last a long long time and are an amazing investment. I will say the arch-support isn't really there, instead the heal has almost a cupping to it, and the lip of the cup is what give you a very strange arch-support. More than happy to get used to that factor.

Really wanted to like these shoes, but the zipper is really difficult to use. When my foot was in the boot, I could barely get the zipper to budge just to see how they fit. A cute boot, but not if you can't get them on!

I really love these boots. They are a bit of a splurge, but I've been searching for a fit like this for years. I'm about 6' tall with narrow calves, with size 10.5 feet. Buying boots that look okay with my legs is tough. Generally, the calf on boots always bulges out on my leg about 3" too low, not to mention that all size 10-11 boots tend to have large calves. The zipper allows the boot to fit snugly to my leg and the calf (though still lower) is really tight, so I'm happy with it. Also, it's impossible to find a size 10.5 boots. I bought size 10 and they are a little snug, but not uncomfortably so. An 11 would be a little too big.

After a couple of years searching for the perfect brown riding boots, I finally found them. After debating over the price, I finally decided to get them. I love them and got compliments from strangers when wearing them out for the first time. The only tiny thing that makes them loose a star is that the buttons often spontaneously come undone while walking. Other than that, this is a beautiful boot that was definitely worth the money!

After much consideration of basic brown riding boots in general, and more than a little hesitation over the price of these in particular, I bought the Melissa Button Back Zip and am thrilled with them. The boots zip up over athletic calves, even with straight jeans inside. The reviews inspired me to try the grey, which is, as described earlier, a perfect neutral brown: easy to dress up or down. Depending on the brand, I'm an 8.5 or a 9, and went with the 8.5, also based on reviews. One of the boots has a sticky zipper, but I'm hopeful it will loosen up with wear. A beautiful, classic boot to wear with skirts or jeans.

Quality varies, (I own 3 other Frye boots). I originally got a size 8 though needed a 8.5. The 8 was beautiful! The 8.5 is not the same boot as the 8. I don't think Frye should have sent this pair out the door. The Zipper is not very straight making it harder to zip up. What if it breaks? Additionally, the leather is not black antique soft but too much antiquing or ruined by water or? May try another 8.5. Frye used to be made in US, (as for high cost), now made in Mexico. I know there is excellent craftsmanship by people in Mexico and nothing against all of you in or from Mexico. I think the guy/gal was just learning on my boot, or something. Also for Frye, for the price I wish you offered this boot with a taller shaft height of 16.5 or 17 inches. More so Frye, hope the people who made my boot in Mexico are making a decent wage.

I love these boots! The quality of leather and the comfort of the sole are none other than, Wow. Well worth the money. My only warning is be sure to measure your calf. This is my first pair of Frye boots. I have never had a problem in the calf before, but these were tight. Almost couldn't zip up. The more I wear them, the more comfortable they get. Finding someone who could stretch the leather might be helpful.

I ordered and sent back six pairs of black boots from different websites before settling on these. Frye boots are worth every penny. They are an investment that you will wear for years. These boots are comfortable and there was absolutely no break in time. I have a standard size 7 and these boots are pretty true to size. My foot is also average width but I do have a higher arch and these boots are very comfortable. I can wear them all day walking a lot and they do not rub my feet wrong in any places at all, thus no break in time. The leather and quality is what you would expect from Frye; excellent. I will get years and years of wear in these boots.

These are beautiful boots! They run true to size and the color is beautiful. It is between a brown and a gray so they look good with black or brown. They are more of a classic riding look than the photo indicates. The snaps at the top come unsnapped when you cross your legs, but that is not too annoying, and it does not compromise the fit or look or anything when they are not snapped. They are super slippery when you first buy then, so be careful until you scuff the soles a bit. They are worth every penny!

Got these boots recently. I am a big fan of Frye boots. I got them in the gray color which is more of a greige color. It goes with so much. They are super comfortable. Very true to size and not too "western" looking like some of the Frye styles. I absolutely love them and will be wearing them with everything this fall and winter. Highly recommended.

These boots are absolutely perfect. They have a look of a traditional dressage/riding boot without the tortuous break-in period. The leather is both thick and supple and I was able to slip them on and walk comfortably right out of the box. They are beautifully made and will last a long time. I am 5'2" and fairly petite and this is the first pair of riding boots I have tried that fit my calves perfectly and there is no slippage on the heel thanks to the zipper. I ordered the black and the color is gorgeous. My regular size 6 1/2 was a perfect fit. I can't recommend these highly enough -- they are worth saving your money for!

I love the simplicity of these riding boots and the quality craftsmanship helps to justify the price. Having a zipper allows you to be able to get your foot in and still have a slim fit around the calf. I find them comfortable to walk in too.

Excellent fit right out of the box. I bought the gray colored boots, which one reviewer dubbed greige...a perfect description. This color will go with anything. The fit is narrow on the leg (I have 14"/14.5" calves), which was a must for me. I can't tell you how many boots I've loved and tried on, only to look as if I had my legs stuck in buckets. I can wear medium-thick knee socks and the rear zip snugs up just right. I'm not sure how frequently the two snaps on each boot will become unsnapped, but be aware that this can happen. Even though it does not affect wear, you will hear it. I love how this boot is casual and trim, not slouchy (stiffer leather on the shaft) and not really "western" in the usual way because I already have boots like that. This is sort of an urban, paired-down riding boot that could be motorcycle/western.
