The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I don't know what to make of Frye shoes/boots, nor this boot in particular. There seems to be such inconsistent sizing from one shoe to the next in this brand. I have a pair of low-heel oxfords in a 7.5M that fit perfect, another pair of combat boots I tried in an 8.5M and they are too tight, and then there are these Dakota boots that in the 8.5M were too big. While I do love the product, it's very discouraging and a bit irritating to have to constantly send things back and try again with another size with the same brand. I like the style, and if I could find the right size so that my heel doesn't slide out constantly, they would be worth keeping. For reference purposes, I typically run in most brands between a 7.5 and 8, and am probably closer to a "C" width than the "B/Medium" width shoes. I like that this boot has some traction on the bottom unlike some of the other Frye boots, and that they are very rugged, yet softer in the leather. I think they are worth trying, however, be prepared for a bit of a battle with sizing, or think ahead and order three different size to avoid the order/return/order/return cycle.

I ordered in the dark brown. This is a nice boot. It looked big out of the box but when I tried it on it felt true to size. Once I put them on the laces were not stiff at all which I was expecting on account that they are leather. They are very comfy, but when I started walking the leather was very squeaky and the boot pinched my foot on the top. Also, I was little disappointed that the boots were made in China.

These are comfortable with next to no breaking in. I needed a work boot and a trudging-through-mud-and-snow boot, and these have really endeared themselves to me. I'm a 6 1/2 and they fit true to size.

These boots feel incredible and look so very very cool. The quality is top notch. There's room for toes yet they aren't wide. Insole and arch support are really, really nice. I can't really afford them but they might not go back.

I'd also recommend: Palladium

I have been eying these shoes for a few months now, and I just bought them as a gift to myself. I couldn't be happier. This is my first Frye purchase, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. The quality is excellent. I ordered the brown waxed suede. I got a half size larger than I usually wear because i planned on wearing thick socks.
