This boot is beautiful but the top lip of the boot is so narrow, I had a tough time wiggling my foot in. I'm 5'8 and 135, by no means do I have chunky calves but this boot would make me believe otherwise. It's a shame too cause it is, by far, the cutest boot on the market.

This boot has a lovely distressed look - I usually avoid knee high boots as they are always too large around the calves but this one is perfect - I can tuck in skinny jeans very comfortably. A word to the wise, the first couple of time you try these boots on they will be hard to put on and take off - however, the leather softens very quickly and it becomes easy after a wear or two - they are comfortable too! Would recommend to size 1/2 size down.

Ordered these Saturday evening and received the Monday AM...Zappos is top notch with getting what you order fast the boots are superb, color and distressing is just beautiful. Although the boot is tall just below my knee and so tight on the calf. I am 5ft 5 inches tall and never have a problem with boots being to tight around my calf. I ran them to the cobbler today to be stretched and we will see at the end of the week if they can stretch them enough. Keeping my fingers crossed, because I love them, the best style of the season. Have many Frye styles under my belt from the '70s on; they are a quality company Zappos is tops with service!

Really great looking boots, but very narrow shaft makes them difficult to get on and a little tight in the calf (and I would not describe my calves as chubby). Still workable, but there is a lot of tugging involved in getting them on. 3 stars in comfort is for the narrow shaft- the foot portion is comfortable!

Frye boots are always high quality and gorgeous, but sadly, these did not fit my wide-ish calves. The foot fit beautifully, the sole was sturdy, grippy, and supportive, the toe box was the right size, but the calf was just too narrow for me. Also they looked really beat up. I'm sure it's the intended style, distressed and broken in, but I was still surprised how abused they looked. If I were keeping them I'd get some Frye boot conditioner to smooth out the roughness a bit.

About Frye
Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Ordered these 1/2 size smaller. A real fight to get them on but the footbed fit perfectly. These are extremely snug in the calf area and was tough to fit even my leggings into. The leather will stretch a bit for you, as after trying on a few times, it did get easier to get my foot in...really soft leather. (Easing foot in is always easier for me with a stocking, easier slip.) If I only chose to wear these with skirts/dresses, I would have kept, but I sadly returned. Too pricey to have and not be able to wear with skinny jeans. My calves measure 14", rather average. Even though they would definitely stretch wearing with jeans were just too tight. Then they wrinkle at the ankle and that bugs me, like all day I would feel that. The cognac color although a really rich color (orange/red brown) was super distressed -too much for me...rather do the distressing myself. Loved the scallop detail at the top. Waiting for non distressed extended calf Frye! 3 star rating overall because I feel for the style boot they should fit comfortably while wearing jeans. Too few options to wear this boot for me. 5 star style though!

I love these boots and they fit my muscular calves. They fit easily over skinny jeans. I own a boutique and work in these boots all day at least four days a week. They are very comfortable.

I know a lot of the reviews so far have complained about the calf width being small, but I have to say I think it is a perfect fit. I am 5'10", 130lbs and usually a 9 or 9.5 depending on the shoe. I have had a terrible time finding a boot to fit my calf and not look like a "bell" around my leg. This style is perfect. I tried them on in brown at Nordstoms and I was surprised that I wear an 8.5. For tall people with thinner legs it is so hard to find boots, I've tried on at least 100 pairs in my 3 year hunt for black boots. It always seems the larger the foot size the large the calf circumference becomes. The quality, style, and best of all fit, make it worth the money.

Love these boots! They look like they are 100 years old and so beautifully broken in -- yet they are brand new! I get lots of compliments on these boots. Super comfy right out of the box too!

These boots are awesome! Hard to get on the first few times, but there is a trick to them...it helps to raise your leg in the air while sitting and pull them on while holding the straps...it works for me! Super comfy. I'm usually between an 8 and 8.5...the 8.5 was way too big.

These boots are wonderful but I had to take them to an old fashion cobbler to get them stretched. My calves are a 14 inches around. The description says 15 inches...no way! They were under 14 inches around. My shoe guy had to stretch them at the ankle and the calf so they would fit properly. The leather is wonderful. They are well made but the sizing and proportion was very disappointing for the price but I was willing to put up with it as my boot maker was able to correct the problems. Frye needs to do a better job at proportion and measurements, especially if they are going to charge that kind of money.

Love these boots! Wish they weren't quite so distressed out of the box but they are super comfortable and I love the historic style. They are tall but so am I so they work well.

These are awesome boots. I love them. If you have an athletic calf like me though you'll have to wear them a bunch to stretch them out, or you can take it to a shoe cobbler, and they can stretch them. They look good, and they are comfortable, and I get compliments on them all the time.

As usual, awesome Frye boots. My normal size fits (8.5), though they are a little roomy in the toe box. I think that they run slightly large (say a quarter size). After trying these on, then the Melissa boots and the Phillip boots, I'd say that these run largest, with the Melissa a little smaller and the Phillip snugger yet (though I think I'd wear all 3 in my normal size). I can wear them over my skinny jeans without a problem. They look, of course, drop dead gorgeous and are totally comfortable. The dark brown stone antiqued is very distressed - looks like you have worn them for years and have not been totally kind to them. The black stone antiqued are more subtle; as with the brown, the leather is very thick and worn in, but there is not all the scuffing and uneven tones that the brown has. They are a soft black, not gray. There is no shine or wax on either of the colors. What a dilemma. How to choose which one to keep? They are all perfect.
Brands I'd also recommend: Nothing else is like Frye.

This is not only a great looking boot, but once you're actually able to get your foot in, it's ridiculously comfortable. You may need to get your new boots stretched a bit across the top of the foot, by your shoe maker, I've read other reviews that say that they're easier to get on after a couple of wares, but I didn't find that to be the case. Also, they're great for those of us who have small caves, as they fit very snug. I normally wear an 8.5 but with the Frye Carson boots, I took a size 8.

Fun and fabulous boots! These boots are so comfortable from the get-go. I usually wear an 8 or 8.5. I bought the 8 in these boots and they fit great even with thicker wool socks. No break-in time either! Feels as if I've had these booties for a long while. Great job Frye! And as always, Zappos rules!

The most awesome boots. The best antique leather job I've seen on a shoe. They really look like they've been through the stables and stalls for the last 20 years. Unbelievable. I got the Cognac Stone Antique...Got them in 9.5. The fit is perfect right out the box. I have a narrow foot, so there is still plenty of room with regular socks. No breaking in! This is a huge relief considering the tough quality of the Frye leather. In my view, this boot is all about the craftsmanship. These boots have a sculpted feel on my foot. The toe and heel have a nice fit; my heels don't lift up when walking. The shaft is perfect for my skinny calves. Love the 15 inch height...I'm 5'10". I've been rocking these boots every day for a week.
