I was skeptical reading the reviews, but am very happy with this fleece.
I heeded the recommendations to buy a size up but ended up swapping back for my usual size as it was too big. Stick with your usual size if you want a mid-layer, and buy the size up if you want it as a baggier jacket.
As for the complaints about quality, I see why people don't think it's as nice as the usual super-sleek 100% merino products as it's half recycled normal wool, but this is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something thicker that I could guarantee to be super warm and not thin and fragile that had more of a real, traditional wool feel, and this is it.
Time will tell how it fares in the long run and if I'll have the same issues as other people, but if it pills and sheds it'll feel like more of a real material rather than these forever-unchanging modern products!

Great fleece! Well constructed, fits exactly to size, breathable but warm, smart appearance and washes like new.

Love the fit and feel, but disappointed how much piling of material under arms, at wrists is obvious even after one day.

I bought this as a versatile layer, to wear under a shell or wear in the house/office when cold. As others have noted, it fits much too small in the arms, and it pills. It is itchy, but the real issue is that it sheds on everything. I guess I can still wear it for outdoor pursuits when I don't care about how I look or making a mess, but I avoid even wearing it to the gym because it leaves a layer all over my bag. (I have washed it several times and it still sheds just as much.) Giving two stars rather than one because at least it's warm.

I have had an excellent experience with Smartwool, I have many pieces of you. That's why I decided to buy to my best friend several pieces for Christmas, including a fleece. However, after she used it the first time, she told me that it got "pills." Most of the fleeces that I have are from other brands, and they have never had "pills", so I was very surprised by the appearance of "pills" with a single use. She asked me if thats was normal, and I said not... however, its that normal in your fleeces?

This is a beautiful jacket and my wife loves it but you should wait to get your refund first before reordering. I have paid twice, plus return shipping cost for one jacket.
