I think this is my 4th or 5th pair of Timps and definitely a fan - even more so now! I like the upgrade in the cushioning - very comfy! Traction is also better but never going to be great on slick pavement as it is a trail shoe. Like past Timps, these have plenty of wiggle room for me in the toe-box, but I have "normal" feet - maybe they are too narrow for "wide" feet? The only issue I have had with past Timps is a bit of blow-out on the side - so far so good but I've only run about 75 miles on these so far.

Have run in these maybe 35 miles, mostly trail miles, and I am loving them. I have the Lone Peak 5's, which I like, but these feel way more secure, the cushioning is much more substantial, and the grip and stability feel great. It's too early to comment on durability but otherwise they've been great so far. I would definitely buy them again.

I just finished 135 miles of the New England Trail two days ago and these Timps got the job done better than any Altra I've backpacked in to date. I beat them up pretty good but my feet never hurt once walking and climbing on rocks for eight straight days. My only complaint..I need new insoles and can't get replacements. The weave on the top of the insoles worked perfectly at preventing my feet from sliding around while doing ascents and descents. Shoes still have at least 100 hard miles left in thembut I need new insoles.

Purchased these after years with Merrell trail shoes (which I've loved) for something a little lighter. They definitely are lighter, but aren't giving up cushion at all. These feel awesome. Some folks are talking about being narrower like a running shoe... but these are way wider then my runners and wider than any trail shoe I've had. No hot spots or blisters on trail, either. I can't force my outer toes to rub the wall. Highly reccomend.

I am new to Altra and have a narrow foot. This shoe is wonderful, grabs ankle and middle foot but wide open front. I am sold. Much more padded and comfortable then the Lone Peak. I dont trail run, but this is my new daily shoe and hiker. And the green is gorgeous, not bright like the website shows but dark and nice. It feels like a sock, hugs foot very softly but has ton of support.

My very first pair of running shoes were a pair of the original Altra Timps (which I loved), so naturally I was excited to try the latest release. This line has had some 'ups' and 'downs' over the years, but my first impressions of the Timp 4 are very good. The Good: -True to Size: I ordered my typical shoe size and they fit great. Not too tight, but still plenty of room for my toes. -Cushioning: They are very comfortable yet they don't have that 'spongy' feeling I was afraid they might have - they have a more solid feel. Despite the rocky terrain, the shoes did a great job protecting my feet. -Traction: They seem to grab the trail really well, even on the muddy sections. -Stability: The shoes performed well throughout my initial run and felt very stable on the more technical sections, including side hills. Some will complain about the narrowness of the shoe compared to other Altra lines, but I feel it grips my foot well and prevents slippage and movement. I ran 8.6 miles with more than 1,000 ft of elevation with no blisters or hot spots. The Not-As-Good: -Stiffness: I was surprised at how stiff the shoes felt at first, given the light and breathable upper, but they seemed to relax after a few miles. I expect they will loosen up even more as the miles accumulate. -Energy Return: With the extra cushioning I was expecting a little more rebound, but the shoes felt a little flat to me. I'm hoping this improves as the shoes continue to break in.

Compared to the Timp 2 & 3, these are more cushioned but less stable. The 2 & 3 were better for hiking, whereas these will be better suited for flatter grounds. All in all a great shoe that looks awesome. BTW, I'm getting sick of all the people who complain about how "Altra has changed", "too narrow", "too different", etc. HELLO PEOPLE Altra has all types of customers with all types of feet not every pair will work for every person. They are a company that needs to be profitable to survive, which means adapting to the market's demand, not just making super-wide shoes for 5% of the population with super-wide feet.

Been running in Altra since 2015 and this is my first review, which says a lot. I've worn every version of the Timp and I think this new version is a game-changer. I'll admit, I was not a fan of the very first Timp or the Timp 3, but loved the 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 and now the 4. IT'S AWESOME. Altra really nailed the slim heel cup, the flashy color (orange), the new aggressive outsole design, and the 29mm stack height. I've taken this shoe out on two mountain runs on technical, rocky trail in the Sandia Mountains above Albuquerque, and I'm able to soar. I wear a size 11 in most Altras, including the Lone Peak and I've found this shoe to run true to size. Disclaimer: I am part of the Red Team and received these shoes for free, however, I'm authentic and will not recommend a shoe I do not believe in. These are my new favorite trail runners and I can't wait to crush some Hardrock qualifiers in them! Thanks, Altra!

On trails plenty of traction and even on pavement this shoe feels very comfortable. I am recovering from a health issue and getting back to walking and hiking. Have the Lone Peak 5 and I wanted a little more cushion because I have to stay on pretty level ground for a while, which does include some pavement. To me this is the perfect shoe right now .. plenty of room and the toe box is plenty wide .. I was fitted a 1/2 size up to give me a little more room, very happy with this shoe. Would highly recommend

I wear them for running and walking on some pavement, but mostly grass on a nearby cross country course. I alternate them with other shoes. They are comfortable. I have worn Timp shoes for several years and keep going back to them. They are sturdy with a wide toe box. But the laces are too short. I can barely get them tied. And on this pair the tongue is too short. Every time I put them on I struggle to get the tongue pulled up enough so that the laces are on it and not my foot.

Rooty, dirt trail running. The tongue takes some work to get situated but the shoe fits and feels comfy. The lace tension takes some work to get right as well but still love this shoe. Feels light and solid all around.

I am distance runner. This shoe lasted 8 months with lots of miles. TIMP 4 fits well, stabilization, comfortable, and great shoe for all terrain. The only thing negative thing about shoe is, the mesh and the side of the shoe tore within 7 months.

I went back to Timps after experimenting with the first edition of the Mont Blanc, which had a little bit more cushion but which didn't breathe well--they resist water but once the water gets through, your feet stay wet forever, not a great thing when you've got several hours to go in an ultra. The Timps are breathable and drain pretty quickly after running through the occasional 4 inch deep puddles I run across on trails here. The loop on the heel makes it pretty easy to get these on, too--I just wish the loop didn't ride quite so high on my heel because it sits above the low-rise socks I like to wear. They are fine with over the ankle socks, though.

Great trail shoe if you aren't running anything technical. They fit perfect in every way and there's no rubbing anywhere. In two runs I've slipped and fell twice on rocks and I've never fallen before.

I purchased for jogging. I wear it for walking and jogging. It's very comfortable. I prefer the standard fit when jogging, lessens knee pain.

I was negative about these shoes at first, because the tongues slide towards the outside immediately and don't stay centered. But after walking in them for a week, and using them on a hike today with my family I really love them. I like the cushion they provide. Plenty of room for my toes to splay, my ankles have room to move and not be rubbed. I would but them again.

I wear this shoe as Altra designers intended: for mixed-surface, dry runs and it has not disappointed. I find the rubber to be well-suited for theses types of runs as it is not too-soft nor too hard. The mid-sole has enough cushion for my mid-length runs (13-18 miles) yet doesn't feel too cushioned for shorter runs. I haven't experienced significant midsole deterioration at 250 miles and feel confident I will get another 100 before they are retired. (Note that in order to optimize midsole performance, I rotate several pairs of shoes and give each pair at least 48 hours of midsole-rest between runs.) The uppers are still in good condition and only show normal wear-and-tear.

Great shoe,I've bee rocking multiple generations and so far this one is the best as per the sole and fit. The upper should get some more attention as the top started to peel off after 40miles. But Altra support went above and beyond and replaced it by a new pair .

1) Fit is amazing. 2) Shoe lip, don't use it as intended, slide it to the outside so the cutout is hugging your leg, perfect. 3) Water drainage god. Are dry in no time after completely being soaking wet. 4) Lug system. Change it now. Just slap the LP lug system under there and we're good. Prone to wear (only got like 1/5 of the distance on them compared to my LP5) and zero traction. 5) Upper in toe box area. I think it caused all my socks to have big toe area holes within a few weeks (and I had cut my toenails properly beforehand). Also, the upper itself got holes in it quickly too. Maybe just a tad more height there? 6) The webbing at the drainage holes, love it, but could definitely be reinforced a bit for extra durability. Would buy again if they fixed at least number 4 and 5, 6 would be a great extra.

*Disclaimer: Altra provided me with this shoe at a discount as part of their Altra RED team. I've run 150 miles so far in the Timp 4's in dry rocky and wet mountainous terrains. Used in WA Cascade Mtns, CA San Gabriel Mtns, CO Leadville Mtns, and NV Mt Charleston/Lake Tahoe Mtns. Pro This shoe is Protective for long miles in the mountains and rocky trails. The midsole, outsole, and shoe overlays do a great job! Pro - The shoe fit is very specious. Which I like and find works really well during longer efforts 30+ trail miles because it prevents your discomfort as your feet swell during longer efforts, especially for multi-day events like backpacking or back-to-back ultra runs. It feels like they are a throwback to the original Timp, which I love and completed a PCT thru hike in. Pro- The Heel Pull tab is really fun! I'm excited after every run to rip off my shoes so quickly and easily. Con The shoe fit is inconsistent across versions, which I think is ok in the short-term if Altra can make this change stick and have clear distinctions between their trail line up. (Example: Mont Bs are your slim/racers, Timps are wide/trainers, Lone Peak are versatile/wide/trainers). I found the last two Timp versions to be more secure, tighter, and lighter, therefore a shoe I felt comfortable to race in. Now, I'm re-thinking and making the transition to MB for future trail races, which is good, but I just didn't realize that until I used the newer Timp's for myself. Conclusion: The Timp 4s are a go-to trail daily trainer. They're sturdy and comfortable on long mountainous trail days. They absorb mile after mile and keep ya going strong. As I approach my trail racing season next year, I'll look to other Altras models (MB or Superiors) for racing, but keep the Timp 4s in my line up for all the easy/long trail miles.

I've had these shoes in my rotation for about 4 month and have put nearly 200 miles on them, including two mountain 30s. I'm based out of western NC so I have taken them on everything from rough ridgelines, to river trails, to flowey mountain bike single track. The fit is perfect for a faster, more technical feel while still having a wide enough toebox for all day comfort. The midsole is exceptional, fast, and plain fun and the drainage ports work wonders. The one serious, and I mean serious detriment is the traction is God awful. They now only serve as my option for runs on dry single track, gravel road, and routes with many stream crossings, though I still don't trust them. Basically it's one of the best ultra marathon ready shoes I've ever worn, but it's more bark than bite.

Used primarily for competitive run n gun style shooting competitions. The tongue always moves to the side and i cannot keep it in the middle. Not sure how to remedy that. Also, the rear tread piece on the left shoe has now come off and i will try and find some type of glue or something to reattach. Very comfortable and i really like the way they look. I am not so sure that i should have chosen a "tougher" Altra trail running style.
