I called customer service to ask about size since I usually get petite. She advised lrg. It fits a little big even with a hoodie underneath it.
Problem is-it's not that warm. Was expecting it to be spectacular after reading the reviews and paying $200+ Would be helpful if there was a pull in the bottom so cold air doesn't circulate from bottom of coat. Not that crazy about it. Especially since it was so overpriced!

I had bought this same coat without the hood five years ago and have loved it. I was ready for a new one so since there was not the option of no hood, I ordered with the hood, same size. The quality was fine but the sizing is off. It fit in the chest and arm length but it was huge around the hips. I then ordered the x-small, which fit perfectly through the hips but was just a little too small in the bust to be comfortable. I returned both. I am so disappointed. I really wanted the coat. Also, the "mariner blue" looked like navy when I received it.

This long coat is new and nice; I like the shape, plum color, deep pockets, nicely fitted hood and it is lightweight. I wore it in London recently and it stayed dry and warm. Two concerns one is that I find a coat feather every so often and I wonder if that should be a concern? Also the long zipper is troublesome; takes a little time to zip it up. (Maybe it's me.)

Quite a few years ago, when this Austinite moved to Boston, I researched down jackets and fell in love with the L.L. Bean parka. It has the same quality down fill and life-time guarantee as other more expensive brands so I went with it.
As that was a quite a while ago (13yrs?!?), it was time to get a new one.
I would love for y'all to bring back some of the features from the previous model (from 2006?):
- the adjustable inner elastic drawstring at the waist for a customizable and more flattering fit
- the soft fabric lining at the wrist cuffs, so keep out the cold and keep in the warmth
- the soft fabric lining at the neckline, which is more cozy and warmer along the neck
- the inside left breast pocket with a zipper, to make "light" (e.g., wallet and phone only) super easy access while outdoors and traveling (the current inside pockets require me to unzip the jacket much, much more and expose myself to cold weather)
The new model has a new large pocket without a zipper. Could y'all have zippers for all pockets?
Ok, so things I love about the new model (and the old model!):
- 850 is fantastically warm and super lightweight, meaning it is a fun "puffy" coat that is still lightweight and relatively thin for such a warm coat.
- its uber warm. I used it for walking my dog in 7F (without the windchill in Boston with a t-shirt and sweater underneath) and, because its magical down, I can wear it indoors at 68F and feel cozy.
- the outside pockets are super deep, so my phone, keys, wallet, etc can fall to the bottom and be secure in the pocket and there is still room for my hands
- the soft lining in the pockets means that my hands are warmer in my (down!) pockets than in gloves
- the zippers on the pockets - the two outside and one inside - adds functionality
- the tags on the zippers which make it easier to use, especially with gloves
- the double full-length zipper allows me to zip down around my neck and also zip up the bottom if I want
- the hood has an adjustable elastic, so I can adjust it smaller to stay on my head in the wind
- the cut is flattering (comes in a bit at the waist)
- the dark gray / brown on the inside is a nice touch - to go along with the black jacket
- the new model has a storage pocket - for stuffing the jacket into its own pocket for easier packing!

The jacket is so light weight I thought it wouldn't be warm enough, but it is toasty and comfortable even for driving. The only complaint I have is with the zipper. It should be heavier to hold up under winter use.

This is a beautiful coat; but it did not fit me right. I have short arms and a short waist. It's hard to find coats to fit me. I had to return the coat.

I love the coat and the color (olive green/taupe). When I read the reviews they seemed split on whether the coat was warm enough. Here in the mountains, even in Denver the coat is great with layers or in high 30's 40's. But when it gets colder, I which it was warmer. Also for colder weather I wish it was longer. I decided to keep it, because the color, the fit, the hood, the ease is great, but unfortunately, I have to look for something else for colder temps.

I debated whether even to get this coat because of the price. Overall I like it but wish it had cuffs. Also wish the hood had a bit more room and removable. When zippering it all way up, it's very tight around the neck. It's warm and comfortable. I tried a 2x last year but was way too big. I'm able to wear a layer underneath and it's fitted but not tight. Also pleased the logo isn't stamped on the front. That has stopped me from other purchases. I don't like to feel I'm an advertisement for LLBean. Wore it out in the snowstorm today and it kept me warm and dry.

I purchased the 850 several years ago and the style was a bit different but I loved it. It's a great coat for cold days and is great to drive in.I have to purchase another as I lost mine and cannot find it anywhere. On the newer style I do miss the LL Bean logo that use to be on the older 850's. Also, I'm a color worshipper and I wish the longer styles were available in the same colors as the shorter jackets.

I'm 5'5, 120 pounds and I bought the medium -- thinking I needed something slightly bigger to layer clothing underneath. A medium is WAY TOO BIG. I even put a thicker hoodie underneath it and was still swimming in the coat. I'm sending it back for an extra small and we'll see how that goes. (I'm picking an extra small because if you look at sizing, a small is only one inch smaller than the medium.) Otherwise, the color is a beautiful blue and the length was perfect.

This is a good coat, but it could be a great coat if they strategically incorporated some fleece on the inside. Granted this would likely kill the ability to make it a coat that is packable in its own pouch, but my niece (4yo) has the LL Bean kid's down coat with fleece, now that's my dream come true on a cold winter's day, but for now, I'll settle for the next best thing. This fits my petite dimensions great BTW and I usually wear a size 10 bottom a LL Bean Med top. Lrg in other brands.

Basic coat, good lines, flattering. Length is perfect for walking and driving. Light weight and packable. Packed in my tote easily on a recent trip from cold climate to warm then back to cold - super!

I bought this coat to take on a trip to Russia in late October. It was perfect. Fit well, comfortable, light weight, warm and stylish. My only concern is each day a feather or two has popped out. I don't think this should be happening with a brand new coat.

I love this coat! But, a style change disappoints me. My older model had no hood; this year's style has a hood that is not detachable. Also, on my older model, the collar has a flannel lining that this model does not have. I personally wouldn't buy this year's model for those reasons, but it is a great coat for mild winter temperatures. I really hope L L Bean will come out with a detachable hood next year, because the zipper on my older model is getting worn and won't last forever.

I find this down coat to be very comfortable and runs true to size. I have enough room to wear a warm sweater - which I will need in colder weather. I personally like inner elastic cuffs at the wrists to keep warmer, but this coat does not have that feature. Coat is super light weight and soft. Has not lost any feathers! which is a huge plus - I had to return the first coat I purchased (the puffer coat which looks very much like this one) because the feathers were constantly coming out all over the place. Feathers also stuck in the seams (visibly showing) making it look like I had lint all over me (my coat was black). Love the outside zipper pockets and the deep inner pocket, as well as the length (just above the knee).

I love this coat. It's roomy enough to layer without feeling constricted and shaped so I don't feel like the Pillsbury doughboy. I have 2 minor complaints - the strings on the hood would be better if they "held" in place when you pulled them for a tighter fit. And the sleeves - I'd love them 1" longer. If you're just walking it's fine, but the minute you reach for something your wrists are exposed. I also love that it's lightweight and still keeps me warm.

I just received this coat and I'm generally very happy with it. It's comfortable and very warm and will suit my needs well. Typically, I buy clothes in size large, but I checked the size chart and ordered a medium. This jacket is giant! (I like room for thick sweaters and bulky scarves so that I can bundle up in the winter, but there's still tons of room.) I would exchange it for a small except that I'm worried the sleeves will be too short.
I wanted a warm winter jacket that wasn't too bulky. I grew up in Wisconsin and so I'm used to cold, but live in Washington, DC now, and we rarely get much (if any) snow. I don't like hauling around heavy coats when it's not actually that cold outside. I liked that this could be folded down into a smaller size that was manageable for travel, but was warm enough to keep me protected from the wind on the metro platform.
I didn't have a problem with the zipper like some reviewers mentioned. (It is a "double zipper" so that you unzip it from the bottom to make more room for your legs when you're sitting. I have enough room that I don't think I'll need that feature, but it's nice to have.) Additionally, the hood can't be folded down or zipped off when not in use. I rarely use hoods on my coats (I prefer a hat and bulky scarf or an umbrella) but I liked the design of this coat better than some of the others with this feature.
All in all, I'm pleased with my purchase and I'm looking forward to staying warm next winter.

This coat fit well, so light and warm! The reason I didn't give it 5 stars: the cuffs are rather cheap looking and the zipper is also on the cheap side and sometimes hard to zip.

like that it has a hood. purchased a similar coat 4 years back and I continue to wear it but it didn't have a hood. A hood can come in handy so I decided to purchase this one since LLBean was offering 25% off.

I am mostly pleased with this purchase...tried on small in store but decided medium gave me room for layers, but feels a little big. The down is warmer than other faux down jackets I have, and I do like the longer length. Color not as bright as pictured and main worry at this point is the zipper! Over the years, LLBean zippers have declined in quality on most items. Why??

Purchased this coat and liked it. Unfortunately, within a month or so, the zipper.failed. I exchanged it easily and new zipper works fine. Coat is warm but light weight which I love.

Like this coat. Long enough and wide at bottom so you don't have to unzip from bottom to drive. Warm without feeling really bulky. Good for moderately cold, above 0! I usually wear a couple of layers under coat and sleeves are still long enough.

This is my 1st season with this coat. I really like it so far. Until this year, it really didn't get below 20 degrees very often in the winter...but this season put this coat to the test. With temps in the teens and 30 mph winds - I DEFINITELY needed a mid weight sweater under this coat. It can't handle 20 degrees forget 20 below - LOL! As for fit - I love it - it's design flatters my hour glass fig. - however it does hug a bit around the hips...but the double zipper helps with that - especially in the car! What I like about this coat: it's light weight, packs very well - fits very well in my carry-on luggage; the blue is very flattering; the 4 pockets are deep and roomy. For me, this is a good coat for shopping, running errands, shoveling show; general walking around & traveling. While I do like the feel of the shell it does not seem tough enough to handle serious hiking, an hour in windy cold temps (e.g. - blizzard) or any extreme weather.

Love this coat. It is so warm. I typically wear a medium, and I wonder if I should have gotten a small. My one minor complaint is that the zipper is a double zipper, and it is sometimes hard to get it to zip up. Still recommend this coat though!
