First off I will say that the speed cross are an extremely lightweight and comfortable shoe. They are the best trail running shoes on the market for mild dirt trails. The fit is snug but not too tight and the grip is superb. I liked them so much on the trail that I thought they would be a great hiking shoe but was wrong. I took them on one summit hike and they did not hold up well. It was a pretty burley hike with sharp rock and boulders most of the time and the grip was very good on every surface, but the stability, cushioning and dexterity of the shoe does not bode well for rough terrain. My feet were taking a beating on all the rocks and became quite sore. When I was done, noticed that a few of the traction lugs had cut off and there was some slight delamination around the sole. I've used several pairs for trail running and never had this issue, so my thought is that these shoes aren't made to hold up in more intense hiking, which is too bad because I like wearing trail runners for hiking more than the typical heavy, clunky hiking boots.

Bought a pair in April 2020. Probably the most comfortable running shoes I have owned but within 3 months the back of the shoe has started to fall apart where my heel sits. Wife bought a pair on my recommendation in May and hers have also started to deteriorate. Disappointed as everything else about them is fantastic.

Loved my 4's! 9 fit perfect for my every other day or do so CT trail running & Mount Washington NH hikes (6 last year). They did wear out faster than expected. I was told by Salomon rep 9 would be best in 5 series. Overall they fit much looser since toe box is wider & made of more flexible mesh. It may be my imagination, but I have slipped on wet rocks more in 2 MW hikes than all last year year. Different composites? Overall they're too floppy for me since I prefer narrower, sturdier, & less flexible toe box. Plus they seem tad too long. I should have half-sized down.

These shoes are slightly narrow, and are ok in comfort. I live and train in Phoenix for work, and these shoes show wear very quickly after running in rocky desert terrain, particularly the tread. Solomon has good customer service which makes up for an overpriced product.

I bought this a couple weeks ago and was so happy to find a comfortable shoe to wear on runs, mild hikes and walks with my dogs. I use this shoe for its recommended terrain but it impossible to avoid ever rock or pavement walk back to my car. After only THREE uses (20 miles in total), I have seen the tread begin to degrade. It is very disappointing given the fact that the shoes are so comfortable and should last at least an entire season of use. I doubt these will last more than 100 miles before the traction is completely worn in some spots. PLEASE IMPROVE THE DURABILITY OF RUBBER. After another use or two I will probably submit for a replacement or refund. Not because I want to but because given the money I feel the consumer deserves a longer lasting shoe.

I've had a couple pair of these. While I like them, every pair I've had wears prematurely in the same area - right where your pinky toe touches the shoe. And it isn't just me. I'm in the shooting sports were alot of people use these shoes. Walk around and look at them - they all have the same fault.
This would be so easy to fix by just extending the plastic guard down another inch. Too bad, I like the shoes while they last but pay too much to keep buying them.

I really like how the shoes look and have received a lot of compliments. The fit works well for my feet and I really enjoy the speed laces. That being said, I bought these shoes in February and by the end of May the tread is significantly worn. I know that these are trail shoes that are intended for softer ground, but I'm surprised how soft the soles really are. I would really encourage a different shoe unless you're only using these to run on feathers.

I put a 5 on one foot and an old 4 on the other and I could feel the difference immediatly. The wider fit around the heel/ankle is a no go for my narrow 12.5 size feet. The 4's were nearly perfect for my feet but now the changes have made the 5's a no go. Guess I have to invest in what's left of their inventory and/or find a different brand.

If you thought the speedcross 4 was the best speedcross ever, I wouldn't recommend the speedcross 5.
Here are the changes I noticed:
-Seamless construction, smooth toes. Great!
-Fit is a bit loose and sloppy. It doesn't hug your ankles like past versions. This is the big thing. It just doesn't feel like the vert dominator I'm used to.
-Laces work fine. I'm not sure why they added a second pocket lower down on the tongue to slip your laces into. Weird.

Fit and size are excellent...but Salomon should be challenged for cutting safety costs!
They have eliminated the safety front toe and rear heal section reflective material. This I find to be disgraceful!
Shame on you Salomon for taking your customers for granted! You should have reduced the prices as well!!

Purchased this shoe because they were light weight and one of the only shoes that come in a wide fit. Shoe is comfortable however, the tread does not last long on them. I've had them for six months now and the tread in certain areas is almost gone.

I have the same size Salomons in my heresy, much used walking boots and this style is different - smaller in every dimension, so at a loss about what size Salomon thinks I should buy. These would hurt over a long walk. Would prefer regular, understandable, sizing.

The Salomon Speedcross 5 was very comfortable and did not take long to break in. However, the tread is beyond horrible. I walk approximately 2 miles daily and 3 months later they look like the picture below. I was expecting more durability from a shoe that costs so much.

Usually run 5-7 mile rocky trails. Didn't know what to expect with these. Had the Speedgoat before, but they were not available. These shoes are way different. Good traction and light, but absolutely no cushioning and minimal protection from rocks. Might be good for softer terrain, but didn't work for me.

I have worn Salomon shoes for many years. I have loved the way they fit - I have narrow thin feet and in the past they have served me well. I also like the waterproof version as I am often in the rain. These shoes are larger in the toe box making them sloppy on my feet and seemingly longer than the same size I purchased in the past.

Really disappointed with the wear on the sole of these, great trail walking /running for comfort but less than 300k of wear really only walking on gravel and forest paths there's practically no grip left, see attached pics. Like I say, disappointing given the price.

I bought these shoes back in May, so it's been less than 6 months. They wore down really fast. That's somewhat usual for me, since I have flat feet and the wear on my shoes is always somewhat uneven, but these went really fast. As you can see in the photos, the tread is completely worn with a hole straight through, and I didn't even use them super heavily, just walking mostly. The sizing also runs narrow. I thought they just needed some time to break in, but that didn't really fix the problem, so I think they were just running narrow.

Salomon's "wide" is pretty narrow compared to other shoes. Too narrow for me. At the same time I had to lace them uncomfortably tight to keep my foot from sliding forward while running. And for trail running there wasn't enough protection from feeling stones and roots as I ran across them.

I've ran thousands of miles in Speedcross 2, 3 and 4, raced marathon and ultra marathons and loved them all with only one complaint, the material on the toe box split on every pair I owned but apart from letting a bit more water in that didn't matter to me, I have now covered around 250 miles in Speedcross 5 including a marathon and a 36 mile racen and unfortunately I'm going to have to try another brand, the Speedcross 5 rub on my ankle bone, on technical trails there is lateral 'roll' is making me worried about twisting my ankle and, on long runs of 3hrs or more I have pain in the arch of my foot, on the plus side the 5's haven't split on the toe box yet! I'm massively disappointed and really did not want to switch brands, as I love the quick lace system.

I bought these in May after having a pair of 4's last year. Comfort of the run is phenomenal and I've obviously gotten some use out of them. The tops on the 4's started tearing after 5 months so I decided to get another pair. The soles on these 5's are far less durable than my 4's. It seems like they went with a softer less durable rubber and the treads have far more wear in them. I will keep getting the speedcross but will likely be going through 2-3 pairs a year at this rate.
