I use for when running hard surfaces but is a great choice for getting around town if looking for comfort and ease. Only downside to every Hoka shoe I've owned is that they don't last long - by 6 months of normal use the shoe starts to tear away from the sole. The shoes are comfortable enough that I haven't given up on them...I just mix in other brands now.

I was a big fan of the ATR 4 but it is no longer available so I thought I would try the ATR 5. Tell Hoka to go back to the ATR 4. The 5 has a tongue that is too thick, the fit is loose and the laces are too long.

Overall, I like the support and the grip of the shoe. Unfortunately, the toe box is just a little tight feeling.

Yes. So far so good. Excellent fit.....great support for my 30 minute runs in the morning. It is difficult to rate them by stars just now because they are so new. The real test is how they hold up over some time.....If they last a long time (2 to 3 years) then I will be happy and likely buy them again. Time will tell. I need to see how well they hold up over time before I can give them an overall star rating.

I've now used the regular and wide version. I liked the wide as it allowed for good toe room and let you really open them up. The regular or medium width is nice just a little more snug. I'm 5'9" 195, so a little heavier runner. At approximately 150 miles in the regular width it's breaking breaking down. The outside mesh has ripped a little, no big deal. The outsole still looks good. The support however is starting to degrade and not support me well in a neutral position. For the cost of these they should last well into 300 miles. I'll have to try a different model I guess.

I returned two pair of HokaOneOne sneakers because their widest width, labeled 2E, was way too narrow. Did not wear them so I can not comment on feel after use.

For a show described as EE wide these are way too narrow. I would never make it through a full work day on my feet. Back to Zappos they go.

Perfect shoe for dirt roads and pavement/trail combos. The upper and midsole ripped apart after 180 miles of use. I expect at least 300 miles out of a pair of shoes.

The Good - supportive, good shock absorption, low flexibility The bad - the inserts do not provide sufficient support for a normal foot type. Foot does not feel secure inside. Feel rather warm. Overall it took few days to get used to the fit.

I recently started my health journey and these shoes fit great, give support without being heavy. If you are a large person, know that these may be perfect for your journey! The only problem I see after a month is the navy blue outer sole is flaking off in specs showing the orange color.

Great shoe for some I'm sure. I have purchased probably a dozen pair of Hoka shoes which are all great but only a select few models turn out to be wide enough. I need wides and some wides simply are not wide enough. This model was one that was not wide enough for me.

They feel weird for now. Sorta of a reverse of the 'forward' or 'neutral' feel of a regular shoe. These feel like the heel is lower than the bridge of the foot. We'll see. Normally, I wear a 9M in womens so the 7.5 D in mens should have been a bit more roomy. May return them but are giving these 'guys' a try. My nephew is a DVM with terrible back problems and he loves this brand. EZ on this back.

The fit was right on and they run true to size. I wanted to like these shoes but they are too soft. Feels like walking on marshmallows. I need a more stability type shoe with good support. Sadly these were returned.

I ran in the Challenger ATR 1, 2 and 3. Loved all of them for fit, cushion, versatility (trail & road), and light weight, though they all had bad durability (never got more than 250 miles before the upper ripped). The ATR 4 was a major flop as Hoka replaced the signature marshmallow cushion with a new, firmer cushion that completely ruined the characteristic ride. The Challenger ATR 5 was slated to return to the classic cushion of the ATR 1/2/3. It's definitely softer than the ATR 4, but still feels moderately firm to me, like they went with a middle ground between the ATR 3 and ATR 4. Doesn't float my boat. If you want signature marshmallow cushion, I recommend you go with the Speedgoat 3. As far as I can tell, they haven't messed around with the cushion in any of the Speedgoat iterations. However, the main issue I have with the ATR 5 is the higher volume of the upper. In all previous versions of the Challenger ATR, the upper would gently hug my foot, comfortably securing it into place and preventing my toes from bottoming out on downhills, as well as general movement/friction. In the ATR 5, even when I cinch the laces all the way down, the shoe is still loose/roomy around my foot. That makes for a very sloppy feeling. My foot slides around inside the shoe and I get blisters far sooner in ultra runs. If you have a higher volume foot (not necessarily wider, but especially taller/fatter) you might find the ATR 5 more comfortable than previous versions. I think Hoka was really catering to those who have larger feet with this release, as they have wide EE width sizes available for the first time. But it seems they went too far by making all versions of the shoe with a high volume, roomy upper. If I add a couple old insoles to the shoe to fill up all the space, I can make it start to hug my foot, but it's a lame workaround. All in all, I'd give the ATR 5 a rating of so-so. I think the Speedgoat 3 is superior.

I have been a HOKA customer since June of last year and have loved the Clifton 5. The support that it offers for my high arch has enabled me to log over 700 miles since I started running. I thought I would try out the Challenger 5 because it offers a lot of the same features as the Clifton. However, the toe box is a lot different. The Clifton offers a lot more room than the Challenger and I formed blisters on my toes within the first 20 miles in the Challenger. Even though these shoes were not the right fit for me, I would definitely still recommend them. They ARE a comfortable shoe and offer great traction both on the road and the trail. Also, even though they are a neutral, they are a very stable shoe.

Only lasted 7 months with minimal use… The sides blew out and the crappy shoes fell apart. $100 shoes shouldn’t disintegrate.

The top part of the shoe where the laces cross completely came undone from the rest of the shoe. I was pulling on it to lace up my shoes and I heard a pop, all of the stitching came out at once. The shoes were very comfortable but the stitching quality was such a disappointment. And sadly they are out of the shoe in the color and size I originally had so now I can't even exchange them plus I already threw away the box so returning will be a pain. I've heard great things from my friends who own Hoka shoes but having my first pair break in a week makes me question the quality of the brand.

I have worn these for about 4 walks and I am having pain on the outside of my right foot? I wish I would have returned them for a different model. I was really excited about the shoe but not happy. :(

I bought this same pair a second time in a row because the first pair was phenomenal. This one is almost as nice, but the right one has rubbed one spot on top of my foot raw when I've worn them for running. I've loosened my tying and that has helped a bit, but still a bit uncomfortable. Strange for this shoe, because my last pair was great with no issues.

I own several pairs of this model. I know this shoe. For some reason, I developed a blood blister on my left foot, big toe. This has never happened.

Wide was too narrow , had to return. Also, the heel strength is lacking (too soft) so foot is not supported, which leads to Achilles injury potentially. Reinforce the heel, and the shoe would be awesome.
