I had the original Lone Peaks and then went to the trail glove, by Merrell. I decided to go back to the Lone Peak for the rock plate and cushion. They are super comfortable and there is less stress on your feet than most other minimal/barefoot shoes. If you're looking for your feet to stay super stable in the shoes I would not recommend these. I have taken them down numerous rocky trails, the grip is excellent, but when you do slip a bit you feel your foot jostle in the shoe. My major complaint is with the glue holding the front rubber bit over the toe box. I've got maybe 60 miles on these and the right toe rubber is starting to peel away. Not a lot, but more than it should be. I run and hike on some pretty rocky stuff, but almost every other trail shoe has held up better around the toe area.

Great concept with ridiculously cheap construction. I love my Escalantes for road running and had such high hopes for the Lone Peak 4 as a trail shoe. Within five minutes of wearing around my house, I noticed the severed stitching. Pathetic for a shoe at this price point.

My previous Altra shoes were 11.5 so I knew I had to order a little larger than other brands. These are a considerable improvement over my Paradigm 2 and Olympus shoes. The main difference I've noticed so far (day 2) is that you stand about half an inch lower in these things. The footbed is more solid; I don't rock around like in the Olympus shoes. The padding is a little better so I don't feel the tread when walking on hard surfaces. And the black/red ones don't look too bad. I don't know why Altra thinks we only buy running shoes to run in; I'm prefer a subtle, solid black over the neon colors they offer. But that's a small complaint, and overall I like these a lot.

I bought these for my husband. He has always worn New Balance and Nike in the past. I bought my first pair of Altra for myself a few months ago and was extremely happy with them. He decided to try some and he also loves them. So much more comfortable than NB! We will definitely stick with this brand in the future.

I love these shoes. They are great for all but as an older runner I can highlight that the wider toe box can make a very big difference in comfort and, by extension, the distance you cover. Highly recommended.

I love the color options on this shoe. The shoe is excellent for what it was designed for...trails and hiking. I would suggest using some inserts to have better support and more comfort. The one thing I am not in love with is the toe box....but that is just a minor cosmetic issue for myself.

I discovered Altras about a year ago through the recommendation of my foot surgeon. I need a large toe box. I wear them with custom orthotics (mostly extra cushioning). They are wonderful- my feet never get tired and they are more comfortable than any other shoe I have tried. The reason I got a pair of Lone Peak 4’s was for a surer grip on trails and hopefully for balance. I haven’t been on real trails yet but they are great on uneven sidewalks. I don’t know how well the treads will hold up since I’ve only had them a few weeks.

I love these shoes! I've been hunting for a trail shoe that will work for my wide forefoot and high instep. These do the job, they are very comfortable, and seem like they will hold up for the trail. One thing I did to accommodate my higher instep was to take out the middle lace tab that cuts across the top, and use the eyelet tabs instead. The style looks pretty good - I think Altra could tone down their colors a bit. I'm going to switch out the bright laces for gray ones.

I’m a huge fan of altra trail shoes and this is probably my seventh pair. I love some of the design upgrades of the lone peak 4. I’ve always liked the tread, but they always seemed to wear very quickly. Maybe just because of the desert rocks chewing it up. The new tread on the 4 seems to be more durable. Anyways. I have always ordered size 14. These definitely feel longer. However, they still feel great on my first couple of runs. My second toe is actually about 1/2” longer than my big toe so this might be a welcome change.

If you like Altras, with their zero drop mid soles and wide toe boxes, you should like the Lone Peak. They have a good sole weed with enough traction for trail or snow running. They have more cushion than the thinner Altras like the Escalante.

I am blown away by the LP4s. The traction is better. The sole stiffness is better... not too stiff but just a little more rugged. The lockdown is better way better so the stability is vastly improved. Both models are the best trail running shoes I've ever owned, and ever tested, a real treat for the feet.

Great fit and feel immediately. I've had no experience with such a wide toe box, takes some getting used to but by 10 miles, feeling good.

These shoes fit perfect to size, and I love how lightweight they are. Great trail/hiking shoe, but I love wearing them everywhere they are so comfortable. Not waterproof though, so not good for in the snow.

I repurchase Lone Peaks when they wear out, they are that good...nice wide toe box. I have a pair for the gym and daily wear as well. Running in them is a joy.

These are an excellent choice for a trail running shoe for those who like a large toe box and good, grippy ground feel. They fit true to size with enough volume for a supplemental arch support as well as those hikers who prefer a sock liner and wool sock. I’m very likely to get another pair. Great “barefoot” type feel.

Like reviews of previous writers: this shoe is awesome. The fit for me is fan.tas.tic. I've run 700kms on them and they're still good as gold. (I actually prefer them over my new 4.5s). Great design, no flaws. Even though I like the soles too (after those 700kms there's nearly no wear & tear on them) they would have been even more perfect with Vibram soles. Maybe. I've done long(ish) runs on them (47kms) and my feet don't feel tired or chafed or hot at all. They've served me well. I think I'll buy 5 more pairs and not worry anymore about any other shoes for a good time to come. Great work Altra!

Finally! Shoes that fit my feet! If you have Fred Flintstone feet like I do buy these shoes! They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned and (perhaps) the first time in my life that I've worn shoes that actually fit. I am honestly thinking about wearing nothing but Altra from now on.

After I slipped my feet into a pair of Torins for exercise and long distance walking a few months ago, regular heal drop shoes no longer felt comfortable. I had to ditch my Columbia trail runners for a pair of Lone Peaks. I am sure glad. The Lone Peaks made hiking so much more comfortable. It took a day or two to get used to the little extra lip around the sole near the heal, but now I do not notice it. After a long hike, my feet still feel great.

I've been wearing Altra Escalante 1.5's for road running (size 11.5). After reading reviews on the Loan Peak 4, I went with the size 12. Very happy with the fit of the 12, so these do run about ½ size small. I purchased these for a 20-mile or so section hike on the Appalachian Trail and they worked great. They grip the trail like a mountain goat. I've had no issues with quality after about 50 miles on trails. I'm happy with the Altra signature zero-drop and foot-shape toe box on these and the Escalante. I plan on sticking with Altra for now. I also have wide, high-volume feet and these have enough room to be comfortable.

Former runner, now just a hiker (age 67). Have only used twice so far, but really like the fit and comfort, even on a 2 hour hilly route with many rocks and roots. My 3rd pair of Altras (Lone Peak 1 & Olympus 1.5) and have really liked them all. Especially good for people, like me, who need a wide toe box.

Bought these for hiking originally. So comfortable that they became my everyday shoe. Bought a second pair to hike in. Performs well and are holding up nice. Fits as expected.

5 days and 4 hikes, zero drop concept and wider toes box is a legit thing, my feet, knees, back...anatomy reaping the benefits. Not enough use yet for durability review but no issues so far, I’ve done rugged trail hikes including a sharp edged lava flow yesterday near Mt. Bachelor, a lot of Smith Rock trails, off the beaten path. Slick river polished rock and other rock, they are surprisingly grippy, didn’t think they were climbing rubber but they climbed surprisingly well with the loose toe box, just playing around on boulders. Not like a La Sportiva Boulder approach shoe (I literally free soloed the Wittich crack on the Grand Teton in a pair of those...yes a little nuts probably) but if you have decent footholds the Altras are predictable. Some reviews mention the wide toe box which helps anatomically does leave a loose feeling, but I’m getting used to it...I don’t think it really lacks for support. I may just get a second pair for everyday wear, at work etc. and one for my trails and hikes and backpacking...a cleaner office set and one for workouts. Super comfy.

Love these shoes! I’m a 55 year old avid hiker / climber. The wide toe box is an amazing evolution in shoes. They look a little odd, but the performance is WOW! Amazing. Down hill traction incredible, super sticky gnarly tread. I was initially concerned about rocks poking up through the sole because there so light. My concern was immediately removed on a recent scramble, not a problem at all the rock guard is very effective. The zero drop sole propels me forward, I love it! Honestly I don’t even want to take them off there so comfortable, by far my most favorite light hikers.

This is the best running shoe I have ever owned. Been through several pairs running the front range of Colorado as well as trips elsewhere. I've used the RSM version to run in the snow in the winter, which are also great. I wish there was a road version of this shoe as I have yet to find an equivalent from Altra.
