I bought this backpack for my 3+ old son. We've been using it daily for about 4 months and are really happy with the purchase. He's pretty big for his age (40" and 35 lbs), so the bag isn't overly large on him, but I can see how it might be for a child that is a bit smaller/younger. This bag should fit him for a couple of more years. This bag provides plenty of space for his lunch box and extra clothes, as well as a blanket and sheets for naptime. The side pockets are great for his cups and we don't have to worry about things getting wet from condensation. We love the front (open) pocket for items that need to be easily accessible when the bag is hanging in his cubby. We've used it a lot for a morning snack or a light coat at the end of the day. He doesn't have much use for the small zipper pocket on the top, but I can see how this might be useful for a school aged child with pencils or other small supplies. We use this bag a lot for overnight trips to his grandparents and it easily hold several changes of clothes, an extra pair of shoes and toiletries while still leaving room for a small toy. My only regret is showing my son how to use the whistle on the chest strap buckle.

I got 2 of these pacs for my kindergarten and 3rd grader at the beginning of the school year. My boys have been rough on them and they still look brand new. They have taken them for trips/pool and are able to fit everything they need. We have used them with hydration packs and the boys love them. We use these bags for everything and have no plans to buy new bags. I know these will last for years.

Loved this pack. It was perfectly sized with room to grow for my 3y/o. Nice quality. But a little higher priced than the others we checked out... didn't keep it.
I'd also recommend:

I wanted a bag big enough for my 13" Macbook Air and a few daily essentials. Most adult size backpacks are floppy and too huge. I have a short torso and most backpacks ended up hitting my tailbone (ouch). This is more like a hiking pack than a school bookbag - for example there is a hole in the top of the bag for feeding a hydration tube through. The water bottle pockets are big enough for 32oz bottles and the expanding stuff pocket on the outside is good for a jacket. On the inside, I have room for my laptop, a lunch bag, sweatshirt, pencil case, ereader etc. There is only the one big compartment and the outside zip pocket which is about the size of a cell phone. I wish the inside had another organizer compartment. I'll end up using a pencil case/pencil bag to keep small items corralled, that I don't want in that exterior pocket. Padding is good and there's a sternum strap. no waist strap, though.
