I was told I needed an ankle brace. Ankle braces generally don't work well. While looking for an alternative, Columbia sportswear provided one. A high top hiking boot. It comes up over the ankle bone and can be laced up to provide the needed support. I wear one size in woman's shoes (8 1/2) and a different size in men's shoes (7 1/2). Men's shoes often fit me better than woman's shoes. These trail shoes have a low tread and are much lighter in weight than my previous hiking boot. I think lighter weight high tops are the way to go. These are also waterproof. That's an added plus in the wet Northwest.

Picked up a pair for mid weather hiking trip in Havasu. used them around locally this fall and so far so good. very comfortable and really like the water resistant factor. Will also be good for moderate weather tailgates this fall/winter.

I have not tested these shoes in an actual hike yet so I hope to update this review after doing so. For now, I am a happy with my purchase. Shoes are comfortable, light and the traction is especially good. Been wearing in the winter so breathability hasn't been an issue yet. They run a bit large and I had to use an additional high quality insole to make them fit and also found that it increased the comfort markedly (hence the 4 stars here). Looking forward to testing them out in actual hike, especially with rain (to see how the Outdry works).

These boots are true to size and no break in period required. I have worn them twice for a 2 hour hike each time on a flat sandy soft dirt surface at Reservoir Park. They are extremely light and comfortable. I am concerned about the durability as I plan to use them on the Camino, but so far they have held up well. Overall very happy with these boots, will do a follow up 6 months from now, once I get some more mileage on them.

Used these on several day hikes around the Opal Creek Wilderness. In rainy weather they kept my feet dry even with a few dips in the creeks. The traction was impressive and the nice wide toe box is very comfortable. Where they fall short is foot protection from the sole. Opal Creek is pretty rocky and the bottom of my feet took an absolute pounding on the hikes wearing a very light day pack. They really need to have some protection to be useful for anything beyond a groomed trail shoe.

My first impression was that I'd have to send them back, but I'm glad I gave them a chance. These are unique among footwear in that they are the first boots I've ever felt had too little arch support. I have totally flat feet, and regularly reject footwear for having too much arch support. For a couple of days I used some more rigid insoles, until the boots broke in a little more. When they broke in the arch problem cleared up; it seems they need to form to your foot a bit. They remind me of my Inov-8 Roclite 286 in that regard. I haven't had the chance to really test them out, but I have done some biking, and climbing multiple flights of steep shallow stairs. They have become very comfortable, and the support is excellent. The have yet to be too warm in August, as well, which is a huge plus. I have very narrow feet, but width hasn't been an issue. The one real shortcoming I can see is that there is no heel lock type of eyelet as found on many hiking boots. Heel lift could be a problem. So far, so good. I would recommend them.
