Shallow pockets. The 2006 version of these pants has front pockets that go almost all the way down to where the legs zip off. You can put an Amazon Kindle(!) into a pocket. More importantly, you can put your wallet, phone, and keys into a pocket without worrying about them falling out if you're sitting on a bicycle or playing on the grass with a child. This latest version has fairly shallow pockets. I don't know why North Face changed the design, but the old pockets didn't seem to have any disadvantages.

Quality has slipped in recent years, I wore out the pair I purchased 6 years ago. After one washing the stitching started to come apart, I compared the new with the old and the differents in construction and material quality was clearly there. Don't expect these to last long.

I purchased this item to replace an old pair which has wonderfully served me through almost four years of hiking and casual wear. They are very comfortable, presentable and versatile for almost any occasion. They dry very easily and are easy to pack. The elastic waistband accommodates a broad range of "intermediate" (between size) fits. The shorts likewise drape very well. Zappos.com customer service is just as excellent as the product in providing outstanding convenience and customer satisfaction.

I bought these for my husband as a second pair and he was super happy and wears them alot-very comfy and versatile!

What can I say? Bought these pants for hiking and loved them so much I came back and ordered one of each color! Best pants ever! Wear them all the time now.

These are great hiking/outdoor pants. Very versatile and light weight enough to be cool when needed and heavy enough to stay warm when needed. Fit is very accurate to size ordered. Tried these out at Big Bend National Park in TX and they held up great.

Love these pants! These are great for long plane trips. Good stuff! My wife says my keister looks good in 'em too, which is a bonus!

This is my second pair. Very comfortable. I wear these pants fishing, easy to zip off legs.

I've had these pants now for almost two years and I wear them pretty regularly around the house, in the woods, in the summer, and in the winter. I love them, they are definitely in the top five pair of pants I have ever owned. They are durable, dependable, and comfortable. I've slid down hills, (not intentional) tangled with barb wire on occasion, crossed streams, and hiked lot of miles in them. I've also surfed the web, flown to foreign countries, built furniture, and sat on a couch drinking beer in them. They handle all challenges with panache. They are easy to clean, hard to stain, and the zippers and the belt have continued to function exactly like the day I first put them on. The pants themselves show some wear but not as much as you would expect for the abuse they have been through. Frankly I expect these to last another couple of years with no issue. One thing to note, I got them slightly larger so I can wear polypro under them in the winter if needed.

Love everything about these pants. This is my third pair. My first is four years old and still going strong! Glad to see them on sale.

All around great pants. For the most part they have replaced my Levi's jeans as part of my daily out and about "uniform". They look great with a simple black T-shirt. They are very comfortable too. And functional with many deep and useful pockets. Have yet to use them in a serious outdoor jaunt, but I'm sure they will be absolutely great there too. As always, Zappos is the BEST.

Love these pants! I took them on a rafting trip to Idaho and they dried very fast and most splash and spray beaded up on them without soaking in.

I love these pants! I own 3 pairs which is actually like having 6 (3 Shorts & 3 Long Pants). If you love the outdoors and North Face, these are the pants to buy. My only complaint is that the excess belt material is sometimes too long. Seems to be a different length on each pair. Otherwise they are perfect! I plan to buy 2 more pairs so I have all the colors. Thanks North Face!

These pants worked great for my backpacking trip through Yosemite. The additional zip pocket on the side was great for keeping any valuables safe.

Bought these for my boyfriend. He loves them. They are well made and comfortable. The convertible zipper is covered so it doesn't rub. They look nice on.

Purchased these pants for my son for Father's Day. He went to the coast for a week of fishing wearing them. They are useful in changeable Florida summer weather. They are fast drying and great overall quality!

These are amazing Pants, I wish that I had bought five pairs of them for every day of work. These pants look great, feel great, and have the perfect fit. I am in Iraq and the temperatures here make these pants perfect work pants for keeping the moisture away from the body, they do not fade from the sand, and are just great overall pants.

Comfortable and great casual look. Warm in cold temp and cool in hot temp. Great pant, I own all colors.

I'm impressed with these pants. They seem to keep me warm against a heavy wind, and they keep me cool in hotter temperatures. When it gets humid the conversion is easy, especially with the boot zipper so you can slide them straight off. Lightweight too. I was caught in the rain a few times with these and move of the water rolled right off which surprised me. I wouldn't say they're waterproof, but they will resist a light rain. I have 3 pairs of these now, very satisfied!

These have been my favorite pants ever. Kept me dry and warm in Alaska last summer. However, after less than a year, having been washed quite a bit but always in gentle natural detergent, they are not longer water resistant. Got soaked last week in a driving rain! Otherwise only complaint is that the waist is designed to sit a little high for me and if you pull them down the belt sits above the pants. Still would order again though.
