I like them -
I bought Montrail's Hurricane XCR without knowing anything about the company or the fit of their shoes.
At first, they were harder to break in than I expected, but once I got rolling, I found them to be comfortable to wear for long stretches. They seem extremely sturdy. We'll see how they hold up.

Hurricane XCR review -
I wore this shoe right out of the box in a 50Km trail run that was a muddy mess. My feet were dry as a bone. I developed a blister on my big toe, but was happy with the fit. I will keep shopping at Zappos thanks to their speedy delivery at no extra cost. Thank you for excellent service.

Foul Weather Shoe -
I have run in the Hurricane three (3) times including a run in steady drizzle. I have purchased Montrail shoes a number of times and I like the support; however, Montrail shoes are too rigid and firm to be good running shoes. This shoe is not soft but has enough cushioning to suit me for trail running. The shoe is stable and supportive for trail running. Arch support is average. Feet stayed dry during run in the rain and great traction.

Possibly the best foul weather trail runners ever -
I owned and wore out a pair of M hurricane ridge shoes from Dec 2001 to June 2003. These shoes rock in just about any condition. I was just as comfortable in New England snow as I was in Pacific Northwest wet. The waterproof on-trail-bootie was excellent in cold climates. The aggressive tread gave me traction on slippery, algae covered rocks and muddy banks. Traction was never an issue (until they wore smooth)! I put tons and tons of miles on my shoes and wish they could last forever. One drawback, in extreme heat and humidity (115+ degrees) the waterproof sock acts as a bag that collects sweat and soaks your feet. Under sane running temperatures, there's no problem with breathibility.

Tough to fit, but a very nice shoe -
I ended up having two sizes sent to me because my normal size felt too big. It took a lot of walking around the house to finally decide to go with the bigger (my normal size) shoe. I was concerned that it would be too big, but with a solid marathon lacing, they've worked out great. This is a stiff shoe that needs breaking in, but if feels tough and durable. They're a little hard to get on and off, but I still like the tight design. Great shoe for running, walking, and hiking. A little expensive, so only time will tell if the investment was worth it.

Team Total Training Coach -
As a coach and triathlete I love this shoe! One the performance is great. Gore tex keeps the foot warm and dry for cross country running. I've used this sneaker in multiple events. Ironman to sprint distance triathlon. Including 24 hour MT biking events. It provides support and comfort off the bike. I feel this shoe is great in all conditions. Mudd it's self cleaning and always a firm foot on the ground. Wet weather and snow the goretex provides protection from all elements. The only negative thing with the shoe is it's a little warm if you happen to be stuck at work. Feet tend to be a little damp after a long day at work. shoe also runs a little on the larger size.

Even running in 10 degree weather these shoes get a little warm, but that's to be expected.
A little skeptical that the stretch tongue will hold out for the long haul. We'll see.
Traction is great. Comfort isn't too bad, but I've had other Gore-Tex shoes that didn't feel as papery.

This is a great pair of shoes. They are extremely comfortable & did not require a break-in period.

Good, but...
This is a GREAT shoe. I live in Vermont and bought them this past November to act as my winter boots. They are 100% water proof and VERY comfortable. I'm often on my feet all day at work and the comfort is great! Additionally the tread is very hardcore and they grip quite well.
My only complaint is that both shoes have ripped, however the gortex inner sock thing hasn't ripped and my feet still stay dry in the rain. Well worth the money!

Extremely durable running shoe. Can handle all the elements and be easily washed off with a hose. Completely waterproof. Shoe was 1/2 size smaller than my New Balance. Also feels more narrow than New Balance. Shoe is very stiff and never felt really broken in. If you're looking for something that is basically indestructible but don't mind the stiffness, this is it. I would say better suited for hiking than running.

Most Uncomfortable Shoe...Ever.
After reading excellent reviews here, I decided to purchase the Hurricane XCR but in 1/2 size larger (I'm an 8) as the reviews generally agree that they run a bit small. When they arrived, they still felt an additional 1/2 size smaller. The usual hassle free Exchange (Thanks Zappos!) and soon enough the Size 9's arrived. They felt fine except for the inner forefoot area where they pinched the living hell out of me. There was plenty of toe room, so I decided that, like most shoes, that they would be fine after breaking in. I decided to keep them and wound up taking one for the team. Regardless of how tight or how loose I tied the laces, this shoe continued to bite hard. The more I walked, the worse it got. Wear them for a day. Let them rest. Try them again, nothing. More bite every time...different socks...bite, moleskin...bite. Rest for a few days...worse bite then before. I've never tried so diligently to break in a pair of shoes only to have them actually get worse...and no...I've never had foot problems at all.
To conclude...the Montrail Hurricane XCR is a good looking shoe with excellent breathability and water resistance: all good attributed which went directly down the toilet as soon as I began to walk in them...be careful with this one...though the service and folks at Zappos are great...it may just turn you off to on line shoe purchases as it did me.

A killer on wet rocks -
I like the Hurricane Ridge XCR and its sibling the Leona Divide in every respect but they are VERY SLIPPERY on wet rocks. I've had two nasty falls while wearing them to tour underground caves. Put Vibram soles on this baby, Montrail, and you'll have a star on your line-up.

Noisy -
I'm not sure if it’s normal for this shoe or not, but it is extremely loud. Indoors it sounds like I am walking with plastic bags tied around my feet. I am debating on whether to return this and get something different.

Looks good but fit tight -
I bought these shoes because I liked the look and loved the reviews. But after wearing them for a few days they wouldn't break in and worse they seemed to feel tighter and tighter- until they gave me blisters. They pinch me in the back of my heel. I bought some Salomon’s and I'm much happier with them. Be careful.

Great shoe if you aren't concerned about waterproofing -
Don't buy these if you want the waterproofing to be long lasting. They are very comfortable and would get a perfect score if the waterproofing lasted.
First off I must say that the customer support at Montrail is excellent to say the least. My wife and I both bought a pair and they were great for about 2 months. They then started leaking water in the toes. Montrail took them back and sent us two brand new pairs with out any hassle. Unfortunately after about 3 months with the new shoes both pair are leaking water again in the toes. I don't know if this is common issue for Gortex shoes because I have never owned any prior to these.
I would chalk up one bad pair as a fluke, but to have 4 pair start to leak in the same spot after about the same amount of wear is more than a fluke.

My wife and I purchase a pair for each of us. They were great for about 3 months of light wear. (weekend light trail walking). After about three months both pair started to leak water through the toes slightly. After 4 months it was so bad we could no longer wear them.

An expensive disappointment -
The first two or three times I ran in these shoes, in the snow, I was very happy with little break-in needed and snug, gore-tex fit and extra traction. By the fourth time, I was appalled at the blisters and bruised toenails I'd accrued. Either the break-in is deceptively hard, or the toe-box is deceptively small. I am afraid to run in these again.
