Ultimate Direction

Ultimate Direction Logo
In 1985, Ultimate Direction invented the entire category of hydration packs. Ultimate Direction built the first waist pack designed to carry bottles, a few years later created the first bottle strap to carry a water bottle in your hand, and made numerous other innovations that helped define what a hydration pack is today.

More than 25 years later, Ultimate Direction is at the forefront again with its Signature Series, having been created by three of the world’s best ultra-runners. This innovation popularized the "vest" concept for carrying water, featuring no-bounce comfort and the ability to easily access bottles in the front. Now, Ultimate Direction is introducing the very first women's-specific line of hydration packs, designed by the Women’s Collective when Ultimate Direction asked them specifically what they wanted for themselves. Finally, Ultimate Direction has updated the whole product line with new technical fabrics, streamlined design, and contemporary colors.

Ultimate Direction’s products are designed by athletes for athletes. Some of the best runners in the world thought long and hard about what works the best, and the result is the amazing features you see today. The Ultimate Direction mission is to provide the ultimate in high performance hydration for everyday athletes. Ultimate Direction reengineers, reinvents, and redefines high performance hydration for everyday athletes.

I'm 5.9, 140 lbs. The medium fits perfectly--tight but just enough so that they don't bounce around or chafe. The built in shorts were noticeable at first, I think because I usually run in shorts with a liner brief. But after a mile or so, I did not notice them anymore. I suspect that for people with muscular thighs, they might ride up a bit. I have not tried running in them yet with the water bottles installed. Overall so far though, I'm happy with this purchase (especially since I got them at a Zappos sale price!)

I absolutely love this vest. It is far more comfortable than I thought it would be. (I'm 5'9 and 139 pounds and I bought the sm/med.) I've been running with a backpack for years and finally decided to get a running vest and it is far more comfortable than a pack. I run with two extra bottles in the back and I switch them with the front bottles when they are empty. There is room for sunscreen and a snack on the front of the vest. I have a large phone so I have to put it in the back but that is where I want it anyways so that is fine. I love having 2 500 ml bottles on the front because I drink a lot of fluid in the summer. The only downside I've found is that when I load up the back with a lot of weight it sits low on my back on my waist. I wish this vest had compression straps on the top of the shoulder so I could pull the back of the pack up higher on my back. (If you are familiar with large backpacks they often have this feature.) So I have to stuff a buff or something in the bottom of the pack so that the heavier items are not banging on my waist. I don't know how this pack performs with the hydration bladder, but I will probably have to purchase one as my runs get longer and I need the maximum fluid capacity of 3 liters. I am not sure how much room will be left in the pack with a 2 liter bladder. Probably not much room at all. If you want to carry 3 liters of fluid and have room for clothing and more food then you'll probably need one of the larger models like the adventure vesta.

Race Vesta 5

Great for a short/ mid run, but too small for me. I'm 5'4" 32C or 34B; about 35" at the bust and 30 - 31" underbust. Based on the size chart I bought the xsmall / small. With the back fully extended there was plenty of room to close the chest straps, but it was too tight in the torso pocket area. The pockets are made of stretch material. When the vest was fastened the pockets were stretched so tight it would be hard to add a gel; there's no way I could add a phone. I'm going to try the size medium/ large. Hopefully the pockets will be loose enough for a phone. There's not a lot of extra space in this, so I need every pocket to be functional. Otherwise, it's a cool design. This vest has a surprising amount of features. I kept finding extra details, like the compression bungees that can be added over the front pockets, or the tabs that make it easier to release the draw string around the bottle pockets.

Based on the size chart I should wear a XL, however; had to return it for a Large. After running in the large, I probably should have got a medium. Overall it works well, but occasionally I have to pull it up.

Can’t stop water bottles from slipping into the pocket once they empty some and they are hard to pull back out, because I’ve cinched the elastic tight to try to keep them from slipping. Definitely can’t drink on the run when that happens and then have to stop to pull out bottles. Got a bottle with straw to see if that would help, which it does when bottle empties, but when that bottle is full the straw rubs on my chin. Unfortunately the pack is worthless to me, because it makes getting water so hard while running. Back to my Nathan pack with a bladder. The fit is great and light, but the bottle situation I can’t figure out so I just can’t use it.
