Ultimate Direction

Ultimate Direction Logo
In 1985, Ultimate Direction invented the entire category of hydration packs. Ultimate Direction built the first waist pack designed to carry bottles, a few years later created the first bottle strap to carry a water bottle in your hand, and made numerous other innovations that helped define what a hydration pack is today.

More than 25 years later, Ultimate Direction is at the forefront again with its Signature Series, having been created by three of the world’s best ultra-runners. This innovation popularized the "vest" concept for carrying water, featuring no-bounce comfort and the ability to easily access bottles in the front. Now, Ultimate Direction is introducing the very first women's-specific line of hydration packs, designed by the Women’s Collective when Ultimate Direction asked them specifically what they wanted for themselves. Finally, Ultimate Direction has updated the whole product line with new technical fabrics, streamlined design, and contemporary colors.

Ultimate Direction’s products are designed by athletes for athletes. Some of the best runners in the world thought long and hard about what works the best, and the result is the amazing features you see today. The Ultimate Direction mission is to provide the ultimate in high performance hydration for everyday athletes. Ultimate Direction reengineers, reinvents, and redefines high performance hydration for everyday athletes.

the description from the backpack: "Removable foam back panel doubles as a seat cushion." I bought it due to its sweet designs of front pockets on shoulder strap, AND removable back panel, so I can use it like packable day pack for travel, with panel taken out. Alas, The foam panel is totally stitched in. The only way removing the panel is cutting a hole in the inside fabric... DAMN. It is still an excellent backpack otherwise, light weight, and well designed access. I feel cheated making this purchase, because I can't use it for what I bought it for. I already cut all the tags, so I can't return it now. really a bummer for me. >:-{ someone at Zappo. please change the item description. The 1st picture is the inside. 2nd picture is the top back where there is no opening, and 3rd picture is the bottom.

Zappos sent wrong vest and wrong size. What I received looked nothing like the Mountain Vest 4.0.

For me, it is going to take some fine tuning to get the fit adjusted to my body. I like the cinch mechanism in the back, but the sternum and lower rib straps in the front just hit me at the wrong level. That being said, the overall design is great with numerous pockets that are easily accessible on the fly.

I waited for five (5) and finally received the vest. But, I'm so disappointed they sent me a wrong. I ordered a blue color with water bottles but received a gray color with no water bottles. I'm so disappointed.

Pro: - large vest capable of holding four bicycle bottles plus a bladder. Two bottles in the front and two in the rear. - Plus it can hold lots of gear in a waterproof area that has no zippers so nothing can go wrong. - The size md/lg fits my iPhone 8 in the front left vest pocket under the bottle. zipper pocket under the right bottle will fit gels etc. - Fabric is very tough Con: - No where to put a bear bell. Yes, I don’t run in the mountains without it. - Shoulder straps have a weird hard reinforcement sewn into the strap and it digs into the shoulder by the collar bone. - Size md/lg was too big and bounced around. Bottles were in good spots but the side straps had to be tightened and ended up digging into my sides. - Very hard to breath in size md/lg - The size sm/md does not fit the iPhone 8 unless you take the protective case off. Size sm/md was the correct size but the water bottles were up around my chin. Very annoying. Overall, even though it held four bike bottles and tons of gear, it would not be comfortable on long runs. Returned them.

Nice vest with some limitations. The bladder holder is terrible. The sides do not adjust and the water bottle holders only allow small bottles or soft flasks. The previous version (3) is much better.

Pretty sneaky, sis. I am looking for a true 15 L vest for multiday adventures. UD advertises this vest as 16.4L. Once it is received, the fine print clarifies this vest has only 10.4 L that is secured in a zipper pocket, the other 6L is accounted for with miscellaneous small pockets and pouches. Not large enough for multi-day essentials.

Can’t stop water bottles from slipping into the pocket once they empty some and they are hard to pull back out, because I’ve cinched the elastic tight to try to keep them from slipping. Definitely can’t drink on the run when that happens and then have to stop to pull out bottles. Got a bottle with straw to see if that would help, which it does when bottle empties, but when that bottle is full the straw rubs on my chin. Unfortunately the pack is worthless to me, because it makes getting water so hard while running. Back to my Nathan pack with a bladder. The fit is great and light, but the bottle situation I can’t figure out so I just can’t use it.
