Fred Perry

Fred Perry Logo
It was at the end of the 1940s that Fred Perry was approached by Tibby Wegner, a former Austrian footballer, with an idea for marketing a sweatband bearing the Fred Perry name. Fred had previously used gauze wrapped around his wrist to protect the racquet handle from perspiration. The original sweatband was made from bath towel material and "weighed a ton", according to Fred in his autobiography. The redesigned prototype, made in Leicester, was light, soft and pliable. From that moment they were in business. They marketed the sweatbands by giving them away to the top players at the best tournaments, persuading them to wear them on court; the players did, and Fred Perry Sportswear was launched.

Fred Perry soon developed the business with Wegner by making Fred Perry polo shirts. The Fred Perry logo was skillfully merchandised by offering these polo shirts to BBC cameramen, whilst Fred Perry and Dan Maskell both wore them when commentating. They gave polos to all the leading players; it was the era of Hoad, Rosewell and the young Australians, who were only too keen to get their hands on these new items of clothing, since they looked better than the baggy, ill-fitting alternatives.

It was a clever and successful marketing initiative. People became aware of the Fred Perry logo and associated it with Wimbledon, the world's premier tennis tournament, and the world's finest tennis players. The Fred Perry polo shirt hit the jackpot. It was a good product; customers saw it, liked it and bought it. The construction of the cotton piqué shirt, with its open honeycomb stitch and great fit, made it perfect as performance wear for tennis and soon became the shirt of choice for several subcultures throughout the world.

Being very popular among youth again, Fred Perry once was the shirt of choice for several distinctive groups of teenagers throughout the '60s and '70s. Although those days are long gone, the Fred Perry laurel logo (usually found on the left chest of the polo shirts) has remained an important staple in the style of today's generation. Especially popular in the indie subculture, the signature fit of the Fred Perry shirt has proven to bridge the gaps of diverse demographics.

100% cotton. Fits great, feels great and looks great. I wear XXL here in the states so I was'nt sure if there would be a little difference in sizing but I ordered my size anyway and it fit perfect. I'm so pleased I came back to see if they had other colors besides navy. They don't as of right now but if and when they do I look forward to buying a few more.

Shirt fits well but order a size larger than you normally wear as it will shrink a bit after washing and drying.

Athletic fit - classic Fred Perry. Buyers may want to size up for looser fit. Comfortable and stylish cotton pique. Very bright white and rich red and blue striping.

This is a true classic. I found the fit to be true. I am 5'11, 170 pounds, the large fit just right. appreciate the heavier knit material and the restrained decorative touch of the stripes. I will wear this shirt with confidence for years.

Top notch quality. A bit stiff before break in, but that’s to be expected with thicker leather. Overall fantastic looking/feeling shoe!

The shirt's fabric and its look were fine. But it fit like a medium when I ordered a large. Same shirt in a different color fit fine. Had to return.

I've had these for over a year and they're still very uncomfortable. I'm going to have to get rid of them. The heel is unusually rigid and it juts into your Achilles.

I thought that the collar was stiff and came up too high. They look really nice but the material is stiffer than what I imagined and the shoes felt a half size too small.

Great polo. However, Fred Perry polos run small so order a size up (they will shrink to fit perfectly after one wash).

Super stylish, great look. The leather is quite hard, which makes it a bit uncomfortable when wearing no-show socks. I figure it needs some time to break in. I'm pleased overall.

Great looking shirt. Does run a bit small, but that is the current style. Fabric is nice. The review which says it's for a shorter, rounder man has to be for a different shirt. I'm 6-4 230 - it fits great.

Just a fine looking polo all around, I especially like the length of the sleeves. So often polos have these overlong short sleeves, often hanging to the elbow or more. Fred Perry polos have sleeves with the proper length. Fit is good, I'm an XL on most things, but the 2X slim fit shirt fits perfectly. Really like the color edging on sleeves and collar, not easy to find these days.

I really like these shoes! You will too if you like flatter/thinner and more flexible shoes. I find them very stylish and appropriate for a casual office look. Similar in comfort to Converse shoes, but thinner sole. They run just a little bigger than expected, not an issue though and since they don't have half-sizes I think it's OK. I noticed some of my socks add a lot of friction and the shoes will squeak when walking. Non-cotton socks seem to work better with the shoes.
