Terrific experience ordering from Zappos. Got my boots next day and over the next couple of days did 5 or 6 miles in the woods to see how they felt. I do an annual hike up Mt. LeConte in July and was nervous about doing it in new boots. On top of that I have been struggling with chronic plantar fasciitis. I was really surprised when it turned out to be the best of probably 18 or 20 trips up the mountain. No boot issues at all this trip and my feet felt better than they have in months. They did feel a little roomy compared to my previous sundowners, but I really like them so far.

When I received my Bitterroot boots I discovered there were two sets of shoe laces included with the boots. At first I thought the inclusion of an extra set of laces was a nice gesture and not a necessity. On these boots the edges of the lacing hooks are sharp and over a short period of time they will shred the laces (the Vasque Summit hiking boots appear to have the same lacing hooks and reviews indicate they also shred laces). The second problem I encountered with my Vasque Bitterroot boots was the rubber/synthetic cap on the toe box came unglued/delaminated from the Nubuck uppers on both boots in the same place. The two materials appear to be incompatible. This design flaw/problem makes me wonder how this boot design got passed the designers at Vasque before the boots went into production. Zappos has excellent customer service and allowed me to return these defective boots. I replaced the Vasque Bitterroot boots with Zamberlan 992 Panthers. You might want to check out reviews related to the Zamberlan 992 Panther before making a decision on which hiking boots to buy.

My new hiking hobby quickly outgrew my Nike boots, which were really not intended for rough terrain hiking. Searching online for hikers recommendations, I came across the Vasque brand of boots, with many variations available. I read the online reviews and studied the photos and decided on the Bitteroot model. The price was quite steep. I have never paid that much for footwear in my life, but I needed some serious foot protection. My last outing on very steep terrain gave me what hikers call black toe syndrome. It's where, after several miles, your feet flatten out, and boots that you thought fit perfectly are now quite tight. Going downhill, your toes slam the front of the boot, and days later your toenails turn black. That's when I decided the price for the Bitteroot might be worth it. They have very tough laces (with a spare included), and really sturdy eyelets for a strong grip on your foot. After a three week break-in period, I gave them their real test; a fourteen mile hike in the Collins Gulf region of the Savage Gulf Natural Area in Tennessee. They were great. My feet thanked me.

I was looking for a black pair of boots w/a Vibram sole and Gore-Tex to wear daily during the snowy winter months. I was not specifically looking for a hiking boot, but these boots met my requirements. They were exceptionally comfortable right out of the box w/o any break in, but the ankles are a little on the stiff side if you lace them up tight, so I just keep them laced a little loose. I've only owned them for about 3 weeks, and so far I'm pleased w/my purchase; I would buy these again.

I bought these after returning my Wasatch because reviews for the Bitterroot said they were better in the snow and wet surfaces as far as traction goes. And I can tell you they are right! We have had several snows back to back with some ice formation. I had to snow throw my 600 foot driveway and I usually wear Stabilicers so I do not slip, but I forgot today and these boots were totally secure and awesome! They had a more stable footbed than any other boots that I have ever worn. I highly recommend them for those of us who wear them all winter long.

This shoe is the best. I walked 6 miles right out of the box. And what can you say about Zappos? They're the best too.
