Patagonia's values reflect those of a business that started as a band of climbers and surfers who wanted to stay out as long as they can, doing what they love, no matter the weather. Patagonia's design approach to every product, from technical shells for snow and ice, to moisture-wicking underclothes, to everyday clothes, demonstrates a functional bias toward simplicity and utility. Quality is impeccable, and the guarantee lifelong.
Patagonia's love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of the planet. They use organic cotton; most polyester is recycled. They give moral support - and 1% of sales, $25 million to date - to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

I don't want to be a Patagonia fan boy, but definitely echo the earlier comment - I wore this for a week trek on Kilimanjaro and it was flawless. Push up sleeves when warm; pull down when cool; thumb loops when cooler and hood when needed. My first time in tech-wear and I am convinced. I only gave 4 stars for style because it made me feel like I should be in the deer stand.

The pinnacle base layer? I can't imagine a more versatile base layer, having tried many different materials and styles. I bought a "small", and it fits my 38" chest, 143lb body just right. I did try to get a long-sleeve CoolMax shirt underneath, but the sleeves wouldn't slide under the R1. As it was, I didn't need the other layer and now that I know how good the R1 feels, I will never try anything under it again. The hood is handy when you need it. Quality is what Patagonia is famous for - excellent. It insulates & wicks as well as I expected, again – excellent.

Very rarely do I take the time to write a review but it's been a very long time since I have found a piece so perfectly put together. I am an avid outdoorsman and run daily 5 miles plus as part of a marathon training plan. I have "messed around" with just about every base layer out there. I own all the different brand names and this hands down is tops. Warm, combats the wind about the best a fleece can, has hood in the event I don't grab a hat. This and a windshell will take me down into the 20's. Fit is slim fit. I take a medium in everything Patagonia and this is medium as well. I am 5'11, 175lbs average build (beer drinking in my younger years hasn't been kind despite daily training). Fit is designed to be worn under a shell or fleece although I do wear by itself. Amazing must have piece if your serious about layers. If I could take one piece of any of the 10 activities I do, this would be it.

This is a great heavy base layer or light mid layer. I have worn it on many multipitch climbs in RMNP as a primary layer with just a Tshirt under it. The abrasion resistance could be a bit better as after to long climbs it is pretty scuffed and pilled along with a few little holes around the wrist but then again I don't know what stands up better to deep hand jams and scumming up off widths. The neck on the hood was clearly designed by a giraffe because if I zip it all the way up, it almost comes to my nose. But other than that it is the best you could ask for.
