NB 880 vs. NB 879 - I found that the bottom end of the 880 was virtually identical to the NB-879. However, I am a little skeptical of all of the reviews I have seen from people who say that New Balance took their best cushioning shoe and made it better. The only difference (and I think it is a major difference if you mail order) is that I had to size up 1 full size from the NB-879 or normal casual dress shoe. I placed the soles of my 879's against the soles of my 880's and sure enough, my 10 1/2 879's were the same exact length as my 11 1/2 880's. And even then, I think I should have gone the next wider width. It probably had something to do with the different label, the one where they no longer say "Made in the USA" because less than 70% of the shoe is made in the USA now, not that the quality is any less, just the size. Still, it is the best purely cushioned shoe I have found for my high instep and high arches. This shoe still offers the flexibility I need for my foot dynamics. I have heard that any motion control is better than no motion control. Don't believe it! I spent a year of visits with the podiatrist undoing the mess that stability and motion control made of my lower legs. If you're a heavier than average runner, and you've got high arches and a high instep, and you put in some miles, stay away from the hard plastic and rigid midsoles. This shoe might be just what the doctor ordered. I'm 230 pounds and the 879 easily carried me 350 miles. I've only got 30 on the 880, but I have no reason to believe that this shoe won't carry me just as far. I rated this shoe a 4 in comfort, but only because I don't think you can go by the "size up" recommendations.

Brands I'd also recommend: New Balance 879

880 - Nice shoe. Does not feel as flexible as others. Tread is not particularly "grippy" on road surfaces.

Good looking but construction lacking somewhat... This is a good looking shoe and I would have given it an overall of 4 except for some flaws that I continue to find in New Balance. The strengths are that the shoe design certainly aids my tight feet and arches. The weakness has to do with stiching. The tongue on the uppersole is not completely stitched down to the uppersole. The result is that after a few weeks of putting your foot in and out of the shoe this extra frabric rolls back and begins to put pressure on the top of your foot. The inside fabric also is not stiched well and it too starts to come up. This is not unfortunately the first time I have encountered this with NB. I'm probably going to end up emailing them to let them know about this. This otherwise would have been a very good shoe.

I have been running with NB shoes for over a year, and recently purchased the 880 as a replacement for a model that was no longer available. The back of the shoe is about 1/2 inch higher than the old model I was using, so both of my heels have blistered in places that never came in contact with the shoe before. HOWEVER, I don't consider this to be a big negative, as the skin will toughen up and hopefully this won't be a problem. I have a wide foot so the 4E is what I always wear. This does limit my choices in shoes, as some companies think that everyone wears a D at most. Toe box has ample room, and the cushioning is superb compared to the old model I was using. I run 25-30 miles per week, and these shoes are very comfortable and easy on the feet. I am a neutral to very slightly underpronator with high arches, and compared to the old model, these shoes are like running on pillows. My feet feel great even after my long run days. If the heels of my feet toughen up even to leave off the band aids, this is probably the model I will stay with and I'll purchase several pairs for the future.

Beware when ordering-- The overall construction of this shoe is ok but not up to older versions of New Balance shoes I purchased in the past. You have to order 1/2 size larger than previous New Balance shoes.

Comfortable supportive shoe - This shoe is much more comfortable than my previous NB shoe. The fit is very nice and there is plenty of cushioning in the heel and forefoot area. I wear a full sole orthtic with a high arch and this shoe has ample space to accept one. The sole does not have as much grip as other shoes. I use the shoe for jogging and walking. I agree with the previous comments about the stitching on the inside of the shoe. Only time will tell if the shoe provides long term durability.

Blistered heels - Follow up to my review of 5-21-04 After five weeks of running in these shoes, I am giving up. As I mentioned before, the heel is built up about 1/2 inch higher in the back than my old ones, and the blister problem has become worse. Covering both heels with a piece of gauze and two bandaids before each run has not kept the shoe from tearing up my heels. These shoes will now become my "casual" shoes as they do have a nice overall look. I will need to find another model that has a heel height the same as my old model (no longer available), so I'm back to square one. For those that use an insert or an orthotic, it may lift the heel enough to eliminate the problem that I encountered, but I am through playing around with these. I do not see other complaints about the heel in these shoes, so it may be a problem that is unique to my feet or the way I run. Don't know, and don't care at this point. My heels look like they got worked over by a chainsaw. My advice would be if you are used to a high heel covering the back of the foot or use inserts that will "lift" the foot in the shoe, you might like this model. If you are not, go with a different model.

Great shoes--just as expected - Just right for my wide feet. I only have 150 miles or so on them but they seem fine. I cannot speak for durability yet but all New Balance shoes I have had in the past have held up well.

Brands I'd also recommend: NB 878 or 879--if you can find them.

Best fitting shoe for wide forefeet. I have wide feet across the toes and forefoot. I own these in size 10, 2E width and they are by far the roomiest and most comfortable cushioned shoes I've worn. The toebox is super roomy and they don't have any poorly placed overlays to rub the sides or top of my toes. They are the only model that I've gone back to buy a second pair of. The sizing of these seems to run a bit smaller than usual. I wear a size 9 street shoe and usually get my runners in a 9.5, but I need a 10 in these. I've put about 300 miles on a pair and they still had a lot of wear left in the outsole, but I always ditch my runners after 300 miles or so and get a new pair.

Whatever happened to "true to size"? Best looking New Balance shoe I've owned. Great buy for the price. Close in comfort and stability to my New Balance 1220's. Definitely needed a full size larger & I wish I had gotten EE instead of D. Zappos return policy is excellent, but I didn't want to return them a 2nd time. It seems as though nothing is made true to size anymore.

I am extremely difficult to fit with one foot wider than the other, a narrow heel, wide forefoot especially on one foot, and under pronate. This is my first s2 last. I previously had 991. Much better fit. Zappo's was great to deal with. Made a mistake on the order called before shipping and they handled perfectly. I will do business with them again. I always find New Balance to run small compared to regular shoes and order 1/2 size larger.

Not Pleased - This shoe felt comfortable when I first tried it on, however after running in it, I found my feet aching. This was my second try with New Balance (the first was the 1023) and I find they lack in cushioning and support.

Cushioned shoe for neutral runners - These are solid shoes for runners with high arches who need good cushioning with minimal support. Like all New Balance shoes, these are not the lightest but they are a very nice blend of cushioning and moderate support. Multiple widths are available so you should be able to customize your fit. The look is understated without the bright neon colors so it can be worn with a wide range of clothes.

Brands I'd also recommend: Asics cushioned running shoes, Nike Pegasus

3 Pairs of 880's and wanting another - I've worn Nike's for years. Switched to New Balance 880 1400 miles ago. Just finishing up my 3rd pair. I have never been more satisfied with a running shoe in my life. Only foot injuries have come when approaching 500 miles on the shoe. Durable, comfortable and can handle any workout. Speed or long distance. I will continue to buy the 880 until NB updates it.

NB....Please go back to 879's..! Having worn 879's for years I happily ordered the 'update' 880's....big mistake.......NB must be penny pinching on materials as these shoes are much, much narrower than the 879's. Also, heels blistered by high heel tab. My 880's went into the trashcan after 5 weeks of trying to break them in.

Pillows on your feet - They may not look as fancy as other models, but for big runners (6'1" & 200 Pounds) like me, these shoes make you feel like you were floating. If they only came in white and blue... The SL-2 platform makes your stride more stable and firm. These are the most durable shoes I have ever had, the first pair lasted over 400 Miles.

Brands I'd also recommend: Maybe try the new NB 881
