I'm going backpacking in India in November and so shoes will be of paramount importance. After much research (so I thought) I chose the lightweight, waterproof, Merrell Moab Mid Gore-Tex. The first pair was too small but the next size comfortably enveloped my feet well, so I thought...until I began to walk some distance. In summary I have never had a pair of shoes that have caused me such deep, overall foot pain, and I'm not even carrying my backpack. I don't mean discomfort but deep down pain! I wear all sorts of shoes (Hush Puppies loafers, heavy English wing tips, sneakers, and cheap steel-toe work boots) and I never have pain, whether I am walking on hard surfaces or working around the farm. I never use insoles or orthotics. I discovered the Moabs have NO arch support. I purchased orthotics and that helped, but I continue to get severe foot pain after walking a few miles. You have tried to wear these shoes for over a week now. I noticed the toes on the shoes are ridiculously curled upward, there is a overly-thick lump of sole under the ball of the foot and the down-projecting front points of the heels catch hard on surfaces. I have tried four different types of socks, from thin dress socks to thick hiking socks. The pain occurs equally with all of them. I'm simply dumbfounded. I can only conclude that the culprits are the severely curled up soles at the front and the lack of any longitudinal support in the sole.Read more » « Show less July 20, 2010 by Milt M

Let me begin by saying Zappos rocks. But this isn't a review of Zappos...so that's all I'll say on that. And one last thing before I get to my review... if you bought these boots for someone don't just give it 5/5 for everything! Anyways, onto the review. I tried the plain old non GORE-TEX® version of these at a couple retail stores to get a feel of the boot. I decided that the non GORE-TEX® boot was really comfortable. However, none of the places had the GORE-TEX® version. I ended up ordering from Zappos.\After trying the GTX boots on I found that the GORE-TEX® lining really changes the feel of the boots. It's not as soft and cushiony as the plain version. I will also add that my left boot seems to really pinch the top of my big toe. The right boot is absolutely perfect but the left one is very bothersome. Anyways, I have worn these boots around for a couple hours for a few days. I've gone to class in them, walked the dog and just ran errands for a feel. It's been raining too so that was an added bonus to test out the GORE-TEX®...and the GORE-TEX® lining really works. I stepped in a giant puddle that went to the top of the toe box and my feet were totally dry. However, as nice as the GORE-TEX® is, the comfort leaves a little to be desired. There isn't as much cushion as the non GORE-TEX® version. Ankle support is minimal for a mid height boot. This is due to the mesh uppers. Full leather boots provide much stiffer support. Just be aware if you need support. Personally, I like it. These boots are very lightweight and sometimes I forget I'm wearing boots... until my toe gets pinched. And yes, I got my feet sized at the store and got the size they recommended, only from Zappos rather than from there. I don't know if I got a dud left boot but I'll try to talk to Zappos about that later. So to sum it up, if you think you need waterproof Merrell Moabs, then go ahead and get these. If you don't need waterproofing then please, get the regular ones. They are much more pleasing to wear.

Dark Earth is not what it claims to be. It's purple; don't be fooled when they say the color is Dark Earth. I don't know why Merrell went this direction but it kind of sucks. Other than that these boots are awesome. Merrell is top notch and the Moab is the best I've owned several mid and low tops. Extremely comfortable and stable and the Vibram gets grip on even the slickest surfaces. You won't be disappointed unless you order dark earth and expect to get something other than purple.

This is a great boot. I use my custom made orthotics which provides a very stable platform. The EE width gives me ample room in the toe box; no more sore toes. I used them brand new on a five-hour hike in the Dolomites. Waterproof membrane makes them a good choice for a winter boot.
