Felt great straight out of the box. No break-in time required. I concur with other reviewers that the sandal is one size larger than my normal size. This sandal is well crafted; there are no unfinished edges or seams which can chafe when worn without socks.

Walking Confortable - I own two pair of Sams. On burshed leather and one black leather. Excellent confort and shock disapation. It is interesting to note, that I ordered both pair in my regular size 11. They fit well out of the box and required no break-in. Thanks for a excellent sandal that can be worn casual or dress.

Lee's favorite - My husband, Lee, has been wearing his one pair of black sandals for years now. I only bought him new ones because he mentioned he would like a pair of brown ones. While his black sandals are old they still have much wear left. He has a very difficult time finding shoes to fit his foot comfortably. This has been his best shoe.

Great Shoes for the warmer season - I love my Mephisto Sam. It really feels as well as my other Mephisto Shoes. Mephisto Sam is much nicer than my old Mephiosto Sandals I own. The feet are protected because of the extra leather. The heels feel sturdy. They are great without socks in the park for a longer walk. Since I am 72 I hate to expose my naked feet and toes. I like the comfort of the cooler feet without the embarrassment. Sams are great walking sandals!!! Arnold Rom

Absolutely fantastic! I have wanted a pair of these for years, but ringed at the cost. I took the plunge and was greatly rewarded! These are some of the best sandals I have ever worn. They are beautiful and super comfortable, especially without socks. The width is perfect; roomier than most fisherman sandals. You can wear these for hours and forget you're wearing anything! They would be perfect for those places where sandals are not allowed. Put on a pair of matching socks, and you'd never know! I plan on getting a pair in brown as well. If you wear a 44 (11US) in Birkenstock, a 12US in Chaco, or an 11US in Teva, you will need a 45 (12US) in these.

"Investment" decision is a good one - Before buying these shoes, I read every single review (there were a LOT...99% positive). We can be added to that list. Big investment but well worth it. I didn't tell my husband the price, but he said it didn't matter. He really LOVES them. Zappo's was GREAT, as I needed them ASAP, and they were on our porch the next day!

Odor - This shoe is great, except after couple of months of wear the sole of the shoe has a strong unpleasant odor. Never had a problem like that before.

2nd pair - I'm ordering a new pair after having worn out a pair of these sandals after two rounds of reconditioning. The fit is great and durability is very good although not perfect. In the reconditioning, Mephisto replaced the soles, the buckles, which had gotten bent, and in the second round stitched torn leather where the straps fit in the back.

The Mephisto Sam is easily the best sandal I have ever worn, and I wear sandals all day, 365 days a year. I can wear the Mephisto Sam all day long with no discomfort at all--the width is more than adequate, the arch support is excellent and the overall comfort is outstanding--my feet have not hurt AT ALL in the Mephisto Sam, and this is the ONLY sandal or shoe of the many I have worn (including Ecco, Clark's, etc.) that I can say this for. The Mephisto Sams are expensive, but after having worn them for some months, I am absolutely convinced that they're worth it. In addition, to my taste they are extremely good-looking sandals, suitable for casual or dressier occasions as the need arises.

Great sandal - no regrets - Somewhat hesitant at first to purchase these sandals due to the hefty price. I tried other sandals - Eccos, Timberland - but none came close to Mephisto's comfort. I have an extra wide foot and size D was perfect. I usually prefer tennis shoes if I will be walking all day, but I walked in them morning until night on a 10 day vacation with no soreness or discomfort.

This is It - If you like sandals for the breeze on your feet and the flexible uppers that accommodate hammertoes and bunions and you want a footbed that has an excellent longitudinal arch, metatarsal arch (necessary if you have metatarsalgia) and is extremely well supported and cushioned, and then this is your shoe. I think that the Mephisto Tatius is almost as comfortable and is better looking. If you want to make your Sam’s a little more presentable for city wear, get the dark brown ones and shine them up with shoe polish.

Wonderful sandals- At a price - I have two pairs of these- black and brown. Undoubtedly, the best sandals I have ever worn. Comfortable, good looking and excellent durability. Probably overpriced by $100 (in a perfect world).

Mephisto Sam - My husband says these are the most comfortable sandals he has ever owned. The only thing that keeps them from being perfect is the buckle; it would be nice if they could replace it with a velcro closing.

These are my husband's shoes! The reason we bought them is that he had another pair, wore them forever and wanted some new ones. He loves them and I think they look very stylish on him. They're expensive, but worth every cent.

Best Sandals Ever - I was put off by the price and very reluctant to order these, but Zappos return policy makes it easy to at least try them. These are great sandals! The fit perfectly, comfort is outstanding and they have great arch support and a heel cup. No break-in required ... just wear and enjoy! My only wish ... the buckle is old school. Would be nice to maybe preserve the buckle look but provide a quick release closure.
