The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Just ordered these boots yesterday and they arrived via ups today! Zappos customer service rocks! So I have been searching for the perfect riding style boot and I have finally found it after many failed attempts. These boots are absolutely gorgeous! I got the dark brown leather and I just can't say enough how beautiful they are. I have had many pairs of Frye boots and I have to say these are by far the most comfortable because they actually have a cushioned insole. I am 5'9 and I have thin calves and these come about 1 inch below my knee. These boots may be a tad wider at the top than what I would consider perfect but because they have the adjustable strap around the top they can be tightened to make the fit just right.

These boots looked beautiful out of the box, but the love story ended when I put them on - they are scrunchier than I'd expected them to be, which makes the half-zipper at the ankle really hard to zip. With the boots off, I could get the zippers up and down, but on, neither would budge. The brown leather is lovely but the design isn't.

This boot is pure decadence, as evidenced by the steep price tag and the rich, buttery leather. Testing out these boots was a bit like picking up a cute, stray puppy; I'm so in love that I don't want to give them back, even though I know that I am being too self-indulgent. These boots fit perfectly. I usually wear a size 9.5 and I ordered that size. The little zipper is quite helpful. I love the strap! I hope that my husband agrees that these are the perfect anniversary, Christmas, and birthday present combined.

I love my Shirley Strappy. Wore them for the first time yesterday (all day on my feet) and they felt great. Very relaxed hip feel to them. I wore them with skinny jeans yesterday and today I am wearing them with dress and tights. Yes, they are expensive, but you buy Frye for life not for just a season!! *True to size IF you want to wear boot socks or thick ones.* Buy half size smaller if you want to wear with thin trouser socks.

I'd also recommend: Old Gringo
