The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I love these shoes...very comfortable for the high and very stylish. I got lots of compliments with them. They go well with tights and slacks.

Love these, I had to send the 1st pair back and reorder a 1/2 size bigger. I like these enough that I'm thinking of the other colors! The 3" heel has a nice look, not to thin or to chunky.

Again my experience with Frye: the beauty and legacy is alluring, and you purchase them anticipating the joy from all of the outfits they will complement and assembled in your head, but once you try them on, the discomfort is a painful awakening process, and the disappointment settles resulting in the return of the beauties. That was my experience with not only these shoe but Frye in general. I've oogled at Frye's for a long time, and finally took that extra step and made the purchase only to be disappointed. The shoes are very narrow and the leather is very rigid so there probably isn't much hope for stretch. My foot is almost-wide, but I find that slightly stretched out med's work best over wides. So sad because I was expecting beautifully soft leather with equally soft seams, but instead I got some business major's idea of cutting costs and increasing profitability, instead of a product that honors the Brand's legacy in its category within the shoe industry. Maybe frye shoes have always been over-hyped, I don't know, but it sure looks that way to me. With all the cult following shoe brands that rob their customers craving the namesake and the illusion of status, it would have been nice to have another example of a reasonably priced shoe that doesn't compromise in quality and doesn't charge an arm and a leg. This is another example of why I ought to stick with the brand that starts with J and ends in Crew.

I love these shoes, they are so stylish and sophisticated, I feel very powerful when I am wearing them. I chose the rich dark brown ones, I have been looking for a pair of shoes in that color brown for a long time, you can never find rich brown leather shoes any more. And most important they are very comfortable.

These are my first pair of Frye shoes and I have to say, they live up to their reputation! I am thrilled with how these shoes fit, with their comfort, and with the quality of the craftsmanship. The 3 & 1/2 inch heel is a little higher than I usually wear, the only reason I wouldn't rate them a 5 for comfort. I will be trying other Frye styles because of these.
