The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

OK, let me start by saying, I had to return this boot because it did not fit me. I am a size 10 almost all of the time, but the size 10 was sold out in the black (the color I really truly wanted), so I optimistically ordered a 9.5. Rest assured, this boot fits true to size. Returning this boot was one of the more difficult things I have ever done, because I have been stalking it for a year now. I couldn't bring myself to spend a lot on them, waited for the price to drop, and missed out because of it. These boots are BEAUTIFUL. They are ladylike, elegant, and romantic. The pointed toe is such a refreshing, unexpected silhouette in a sea of round-toe combat boots. The kiltie is playful and had a vintage feel. If you are looking for a sophisticated alternative to biker/combat styles, this is it. They would pair beautifully with skinny jeans or vintage dresses and tights. ALSO, I called the Frye company to see if they would be restocking this style anytime, they said no. If you want this boot, get it now, don't wait! You may miss out and be broken hearted, like me...sniff.

This is a gorgeous boot! Too bad it went on sale the day I received it. The leather is very nice especially the "antiqued" finish. It even smells good. I got the tan color and it is a little less orange than the picture. It's kind of rugged looking but with a feminine touch. Feels a little stiff in the sole but I'm hoping that will soften. Size was right on the money.

I'd also recommend: Born, La Canadien

I would not have tried this boot (because of the fringe detail) had it not been for the reviews. I am glad I did because this boot looks and feels great on the foot. And, I am loving the fringe. I was worried about the "tan" color (the only color remaining in my size), but is a really nice neutral medium brown color that suits the style of the boot well. I went up a half size (a half size higher than my normal Frye size) because of the pointed toe. I am very happy with this purchase.

I'd also recommend: Orthaheel, Clarks, Montrail

Wow, I love Frye but after having to return my last pair 3 times before getting the right size, I was a little nervous. This pair was perfect, true to size and exactly as described. They are easy to get on/off and look great completely laced up or just lace half way. Very well made and worth the money. I will have these for years!

Nice boot to just use around the horse. Frye is a great brand if you need a strong but soft boot. I like the details of the boot, the workmanship is superb. I would buy it again.

I'd also recommend: Lucchesi
