Not loving the ankles - In many ways, I love this boot. However, the softness of the leather makes the ankles bunch up on me in an unflattering way, since the fit on calves "fits" me well (I have average, not thin nor large calves). If this were in a stiffer leather where it didn't fall down or get pushed down so easily, I would be very happy, I think. Also, I did go down a half size from my normal shoe size (though this is typical for Frye boots).

These boots are gorgeous! I love them and I wear them every day! They are super comfortable, sexy, and go with everything. I ordered a half size smaller, because my last pair of Frye boots needed to be a half size smaller, but then had to return those to get my real size. So definitely order your real size!

Having very thin calves, I have spent years searching for the perfect tall boot. I have finally found it! Although the shaft is supple and not at all stiff, it manages to stay up and perfectly accommodates my skinny jeans tucked inside. They are pricey (I admit) but are well-made and "classic" in style with a vintage feel. I know I\'ll be wearing them for many years to come!

Great boot! Super comfy fit, right out of the box. I am 5'10" and these are knee high for me. I'd say they are true to fit, I ordered my regular size. If you have thin/average calves, there will be plenty of room to tuck your jeans in. It is true that they slouch a little around the ankle. However, I would recommend to buy; these will be beautiful and comfortable for years. They are timeless boots and I will rock them long after the equestrian trend is gone.

Additional Brand Information

The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye is the oldest continuously operating shoe company in the United States. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

These Boots Are So Perfect!! Just got these boots in the dark brown suede. They are so soft and beautiful. Exactly what I was looking for. I'm tall (5'8'') and slender, with normal sized calves, and they fit perfectly. Other reviewers said they were too tight around the calves and that they were unable to tuck jeans into the boots, but my "skinny" jeans fit inside perfectly. Oh, and they are so comfortable! I wore them today for the first time and there was no break-in period. They were a bit loose in the back, but heel cushions fixed that problem right away. These boots are sexy, simple, and of Frye's usual high quality. I'm thrilled!

So good - I love this boot! Excellent quality and fit. Seemed true to size to me. The suede slouches ever so slightly, but I think it works. They're just tailored enough to make hippie skirts look polished and just slouchy enough to suggest vintage cool with a straight skirt. And on sale!

GET THIS BOOT!!!! It's soo beautiful in person! Again, Frye runs large so order at least a 1/2 size down from your normal size. Absolutely no arch support so look out for that...but otherwise I'm *very* happy with this boot!

Great quality but not quite perfect - The buttery soft suede contributes to both its appeal and downfall. It is such high quality leather that it drapes rather than stands rigid, which unfortunately contributes to the cankle effect that other reviewers have mentioned. However, even when "cankled", the slimness of the shaft and thinness of the leather still make the boots appear streamlined and modern on the leg. I suspect the shaft is narrow to prohibit even more slouching. The heels do slip, but that is often the case with pull on cowboy boots and in no way means that your foot isn't secure. Overall, while not perfect, I have yet to find a better grey-colored boot. I expect to wear them for years.

I was really looking forward to these, but they were not what I expected. The Frye quality is just not there. And be warned...the shaft is very narrow!

Not what I expected - I actually returned this shoe, so please disregard the comfort analysis. I tried them on and they seemed that they would be comfortable, but didn't wear them enough to actually know. But customers beware! The boot shaft is not very thick leather; it could never actually stand up on its own. For the price, not what I was expecting at all!

Perhaps a lifetime of happiness. These are the perfect pair of plain black riding boots that don't look too rugged or too Western. I wanted them since August 2006 and finally bought the black leather ones online in January 2007 when I saw the tan suede ones in person at a store. At first I was apprehensive when I got them in the mail; they looked a little galoshy. But the more I wear them with jeans and tights, the less they look like rainboots. The leather is so soft and buttery, but prior reviews said that the heel slips are true. I haven't remedied that yet. The size was true; I normally wear 6 but recently found that other shoe brands were sizing up so I had to buy 5.5s. These were just perfect -- a half size smaller would have squished my toes. My one complaint is about the cankles - the ankles are slouchy and I don't know how or if that can be fixed. Even when I'm wearing knee socks to keep the shaft up, the ankles are still slouchy. Anyone have suggestions? Also, the shaft isn't too narrow for me. I don't have chicken legs but maybe my calves aren't as big as I thought they were -- I even wish the shaft was a little narrower. All in all though, you’ll wear these boots every fall when the fall trend goes back to equestrian boots and corduroy blazers. They are pricey but it's such an investment. If you wear them for four years, the boots will be worth $100. But you'll wear them for so much longer than that. I wish I could get them in the chocolate or gray suede too.

AMAZING - I just received these boots in the brown leather. They are fantastic - everything I was looking for. The fit is a little bit problematic, but nothing that can't be solved...they look too good to give up! I found them true to size and just comfortable width-wise, but don't try them if you have wide feet. As other people commented, the heel is a bit loose. Although this was a little unnerving at first, a day or so of wearing them around broke them in and they feel much better. I bought some CVS heel pads (Dr. Scholl's make them as well) which makes it a slightly snugger fit and stops the rubbing that you sometimes get with loose heels. I also invested (for 8 bucks!) in some gel heel cushions, which make them more comfortable - because the shaft is narrow, you can't really wear normal socks - I would recommend "tights" knee-highs (sheer hose knee-highs would be too thin). My calf is pretty muscular and they stay up OK with a little slouch, but not as straight as the photo...I also probably couldn't tuck in anything other than thinnish skinny jeans. If you are worried a shoe-maker can easily put an elastic gusset in the back...something which I am considering. This may sound like a lot of work, but once you touch the leather and see the warm, glowy color you will not want to send them back. They look so fabulous with jeans, and with the small adjustments I made they are really comfortable; just persevere until you break them in (a couple of days of solid walking). I ride horses and you have to do all this to real riding boots, so you're getting an authentic experience!

I received these shoes as a gift and I really love them. I purchased the dark brown suede. They look really great on. They have just enough structure, but they also have a little bit of slouch on the ankle. The only criticism that I would have is that they are very tight around the top of the calves. This is helpful for keeping them up, but is problematic for fitting over jeans. If you are planning to wear these boots with jeans I would recommend purchasing riding boot socks to pull over your jeans and help the boots fit better.

Feels like a fine leather glove for your leg - I bought this boot in black leather and also in grey suede. The black leather is elegant and goes with everything, the grey suede a little more casual but also has that go-with-everything quality because the grey is dark and cool and almost has a purple cast to it. The first thing you notice about this boot is how the shaft fits on your leg. Aah! It feels like a soft, sensuous glove climbing up your leg all the way to the knee. The boot looks great on, and pulls on easily with the two pull-tabs. My calves are a good 15" and I had a perfect fit with the leather, the suede slouches a little bit. The boot can be worn either straight or slouched, as you prefer. I have somewhat wide forefeet with narrow heels, and a flexible flatfoot ("fallen arches" or "overpronation,"), so I prefer more arch support than this boot provides but unfortunately bought my true size, and when I put an insole in the boot it was way too tight, immediately putting pressure on my first metatarsol-phalangeal joint (where you get a bunion) and the inside of my heel. Fortunately, without the insole the arch support is acceptable, although as other reviewers have commented, the heel is loose. The toes do not pinch in my true size. Be very careful if you have a wide foot. I bought both an 8.5 (my true size) and 9 to see if going a half-size larger helped the fit in the forefoot, but it really didn't seem to add any width, just length, which I didn't really need. I am still not sure which fits me better, the 8.5 or the 9. However I am completely, utterly and totally in love with the look of this boot and the way it feels on my leg, and will have them stretched at the shoemaker's if I have to because they are so sexy -- in an understated way, which makes them even more sexy.

I love them - The look and feel of this boot is exquisite. The leather is beautiful. The sizing is about 'real'. I have a high instep and had to have one of the boots stretched to accommodate squeezing my foot in. I'm still breaking them in so they're not perfectly comfortable yet, but, I can tell they will be. These are beautiful boots and I expect them to last my lifetime.

Love them! These are gorgeous. The leather is beautiful. I have a 9 in the harness boot, which is a little too big (I use a heel pad) so I got an 8 1/2 in these, which works well with thicker boot socks. The foot is very comfortable, and the shaft stays up even on my thin calves as long as I have knee socks for it to cling to. I think I'd prefer a stiffer leather on the shaft, but this is so pretty I'm willing to live with it. :)

Pricey, but gorgeous - Bought these in a store in because I wanted to see them in person. I normally wear an 8 1/2 in the harness boot, and recently took a 7 1/2 in the harness clog, but bought an 8 in these. They are pretty low volume, and if I try to add an insole/heel pad, they're very tight. Maybe I should have gone up a size? There’s no padding in the sole, but if you're used to all-leather/non padded shoes, you'll find these comfortable. I’m relatively short (5'4") with short legs, and like how they pull up to just below my knee. The shaft'll stay there, or you can scrunch them down (it's made of extremely soft leather). I think I have fairly big calves, but have no problem with the boot's shaft fitting. I have the brown leather, which has a gorgeous patina to it, as though you've owned and cared for them for years. Highly recommended. Wish I could afford them in every color and texture!
