Allen-Edmonds Reviews
Bought these in Blue after thinking about it for months. I should never have hesitated and bought them a long time ago. Love these shoes! Were very tight when I first got them but after a few hours the first day I wore them they really started to relax and loosen up and now after having them a couple of weeks they fit great.
These are great shoes and I would highly recommend them to anyone. I have both the black and burgundy. I have worn Allen Edmonds for more than 10 years.
This is my first pair of Allen Edmonds shoes, and most of the dress shoes I have were ~$50 cheaper, thus that is my frame of reference here. These shoes were easily worth the extra money. They're possibly the most comfortable pair of shoes I own (more comfortable than my Nikes!), they're light and fit great, easy to walk in. They also have that classic look, going great with a suit or dress pants. I don't dread dressing up anymore, as I at least know my feet will look great and be comfortable, I'm actually looking for more excuses to wear these shoes! To me, these seem to be a great "gateway" into Allen Edmonds shoes, I'm probably going to splurge on a pair of their more expensive shoes next, knowing the quality of this pair I'd imagine those should last me a lifetime.
I'm writing this review on the first day of wear. I chose the Allen Edmonds Amok as an alternative to Alden's Unlined Suede Chukka, which runs a pricey amount. THE BAD I was disappointed with the condition of the shoes, especially since they're AEs. Minor cosmetic defects. Not the worst I've ever seen but still unacceptable for AE & price. I have a hunch Allen Edmonds sent 'Factory Seconds' for sale on Zappos. I'm not sure if/how Zappos QCs footwear but AE would never sell these direct to a consumer. Far too many imperfections for an AE shoe (and for less): scuff mark on left toe (wood sole), eraser sized imperfection in leather of left shoe (almost like someone dripped crazy glue and tried to scrape off with a dull knife) - 2 scuff marks on right instep (wood sole), oil stain on right tongue. THE GOOD: leather is soft and buttery, wearing without socks and are pleasing, great summer boot I called Zappos and advised them of the QC issues. Unfortunately, they were out of my size and no other retailer had the shoe in stock. Zappos offered a meaningful credit for the inconvenience. Even though minor cosmetic defects exist, I've decided to keep the shoes.
After experiencing the quality and differing style of Allen Edmonds, via the Lombard pair of shoes I bought a couple of years ago, I decided to stay with the brand when I was looking for a replacement pair of black dress shoes. After quite a bit of research, I decided to purchase a pair of Park Avenue shoes. I have to say that after a month of owning them, and having worn them about 5-6 times, I am not very impressed. Now, despite the existing positive reviews of this particular style of shoe on Zappos, I find this pair of shoes to run a bit larger than the advertised size, as well as feel wider than expected. Since all of the shoes, to include dress type, I have bought in the past few years, have always been size 12 and medium (D) width (to include the Lombard), that is exactly what I have ordered. The pair that I got did not feel as well-fitting as the Lombard, in the same size and width. Hence, the advice I would give to anyone considering purchasing this style - do try them on at a local store if possible. They may not fit you like other AE brand shoes. I would also like to add that as far as style and appearance go, I am not impressed with this particular line. The leather looks a bit cheap to my liking and the toes of the shoes seem to point upward.
If there is a "problem" with Allen Edmonds shoes is that they take some time to break in and good high quality leather uppers on a leather sole should indeed take some time to break in. I thought these shoes would be the death of me when I first bought them so I matched them up with socks when I wore them in the winter and after about six months, they are comically comfortable and I wear them 2-3 times per week.
I buy Allen Edmonds because I can get a last that fits my foot. With a limited amount of shoes I like in my last, I chose these to see if they would fit. (They are a different last than my other AE shoes.) First pair were a little too big, so I returned and went down half a size. My first day wearing them, I spent all day walking through a warehouse on a concrete floor. I was amazed that I had no foot pain at all. No "hot spots" on my feet, not pain in my arches or heels, no cramping in my toes. The fit was great and they were comfortable all day long! I think I found another last that will work for me!
The only issue I have is comfort or at least the lack of it. Everything else was great so this aspect was a little disappointing.
I gave this shoe several months, and despite trying my best to like it, I'm donating the pair to charity. The style is attractive, but the leather AE uses is more suited to saddles than shoes. It's hard as a brick and never breaks in, and the narrow runs a bit too narrow. Go with the Cole Haan Pinch Penny. It fits, is soft leather, and easy to break in. Plus, unlike me, you'll save money.
Previous reviewer is correct in stating that the shade of walnut in the pics is not true to real life. In fact, it is very different. To the point of me wondering whether it's even the same belt in the online pics. Otherwise I find nothing wrong with this belt, per se. But for this much money I was expecting more. For a casual belt I ended up keeping the Ariat Work. It's more substantial and clearly better quality while being much cheaper. If you can get on board with the triple stitching I highly recommend it. Returned the AE. As always, Zappos is amazing in every way.
A little stiff at first, but after a few wears the leather softens up and starts to feel really nice. After a few wears they have become pretty comfortable dress shoes. These shoes look great with dress pants or with some dark jeans. Keep them polished and in shoe trees and these will not only last a long time, but will also get a lof of looks and compliments. Very happy with the investment. I love being in a room with other guys wearing clunky, unpolished, cracked square toe slip ons. Great lace ups like these will give you a sophisticated refined look.
I own 6 pairs of Allen Edmonds and these are by far my favorite. Trust me on this, bite the bullet and spend the money. They are so comfortable and good looking that you'll want to sleep in them. My only regret is I didn't find them 20 years ago. This is my go to when flying as it makes walking around the airport so much easier. They dress up a pair of jeans and shows you have class instead of wearing a pair of tennis shoes. Buy them now, you won't regret it!
Most comfortable shoe I've ever put on. I thought the stitching was going to be to pronounced or would stand out to much, but it didn't it was perfect. These are very fine looking pair of shoes.
The style and fit is nice but the leather looks cheap for an AE shoe. Seems like a very comfortable shoe for those on their feet all day. Reminded me of an Ecco shoe.
Shoes are super comfortable. Did not take long at all to break in. Being an Allen-Edmonds, the quality if fantastic
I've had several pairs of maxfield's, but this pair was incredibly painful. I tried shoe trees and a cobbler, but could never get them to loosen up across the toe box. Probably should have returned them earlier, but I kept hoping they would break in.
Very pleased with the belt. The color is a perfect match to my AE shoes. Very sturdy and well crafted, absolute must have! Zappos never disappoints!
I like the classic lines of these shoes, as you can easily dress them up. As other reviews mention, they take some time to break in, but are decent once you break them in. One issue I have is that it seems my feet are rather tall, and although the length/width of the shoes is appropriate, I feel a fair amount of pressure on the tops of my feet. I don't know what to make of that.
Head hanging low...not because of these shoes, on the contrary...the are so handsome you can't help but look down at them. You will stand taller because they are that superior. Nice to know American pride still exists. Quality you can smell from the leather to the stitching.
Allen-Edmonds does not offer EE, only 3E. These were very wide around my ankles but very tight in the toe box causing blisters on my big toes. I wore them thinking they would break-in, but this was not the case, and now I cannot return them as they are worn.
