Two For _ONE: Styling The New Balance 990v5
We’ve partnered with CNK Daily, a rising e-source dedicated to serving women in what they’ve dubbed SneakHER Culture, to bring you In HER Soles: Meet The_ONES, a series celebrating the power of sneakers and creatives with ladies across the country. Stretching across a variety of areas including business, design, fashion, mindfulness, and social advocacy, we’re sharing their stories, their work, and the sneakers they keep on deck.
First things first: classic sneakers mature with you. As a 30-something who wears sneakers every single day, I can attest to the fact that my style has matured substantially since I was slipping on my New Balance 574s for a 9AM class. They’ve grown with me. But, there are still times when I find myself asking, “Can I still wear this?” Or, better yet, “HOW do I wear this?”
When it comes to sneakers, wearing them with outfits that are more elevated (as opposed to the jeans-and-a-tee look) is an everyday thing. Dressing them up more than we did in previous years is something many women can relate to, especially when combining classic favorites with an increased desire for consistent comfort.
But, there are still some silhouettes that throw us for a loop. We want the shoes but, we’re not quite sure what we would even wear with them. To answer this question, we tapped two stylists who know a little something about mixing and matching.
Tamra Byrd and Tori Shalea know their way around a closet and have built a living out of telling women what to wear. Based in Dallas and Houston, respectively, these two stylists consistently piece together outfits that are as functional as they are fashionable. And, they both love a good classic. We asked Tamra and Tori to bring out their best project runway vibes for a sneaker that is often seen as more function than fashion - the New Balance 990v5.
Keep reading to see how these two stylists added their own individual flare to this classic sneaker and grab a few tips on how you can do the same.
Meet your Fairy (Style) Godmothers…
Tamra Byrd: I’m originally from Houston and I’ve been styling for over ten years now. Through clothing I help people’s inner light shine bright!
Tori Shalea: My name is Tori Shalea, a mother-prenuer, taco lover, and minimalist enthusiast. I’m a hair and wardrobe stylist that focuses on building an INTENTIONAL image for professionals and brands.
Personal style edit...
TB: Classic with an edge. I don’t usually plan what I’m going to wear everyday but rather, I select a look based off my mood when I wake up.
TS: Moody and evolutionary. I’m always evolving as a person and naturally my style flows with that. At this moment I would say andro-street chic! I’m obsessed with menswear.
Classics are forever. Period.
TB: I believe every woman needs a classic silhouette to show the versatility of the shoes. You can literally wear a classic sneaker with any look.
TS: It’s a friendly reminder that trends come and go but, a classic is forever. It’s a wardrobe staple and it’s inclusive, you know!?
New Balance 990 but make it fashion...
TB: Leather and leopard are a big trend for fall and just my favs in life. I paired my navy leather skirt with a white bodysuit, and leopard jean jacket. The grey 990 was the perfect shoe to complete the look!
TS: I wanted a classic suit look, but with a splash of ME. With fall in mind, I went with navy/plaid trousers with primary color stripes. To keep it simple (and non fussy) I paired it with a classic button down top. For the splash, a punchy yellow bell-sleeved blazer. I went with this look to give my 9-5’ers and other like professionals another way to rock a classic sneaker. All pieces I have on are staple pieces most of us already have because I believe it’s about making it YOUR OWN.
Styling Your Sneaks 101:
1.Don’t Limit Yourself
You can wear your sneakers with any look!
2.Get a Neutral Shoe (Like the NB 990)
A neutral sneaker (grey, black, white) will guarantee that you can get a good wear out of them with multiple looks.
3.Invest In a Statement Sneaker With a Pop of Color
Pops of color will be a good talking point when you rock them! As a Stylist who loves sneakers my clients are always looking to me for inspiration on how to style sneakers untraditionally and make it their own.
1.Know the Intention
Know the mood or intention of the shoe. Things to ask yourself: are my shoes the statement or the compliment?
2.Apply (Statement + Compliment)
Statement: keep the outfit simple with neutrals or go monochromatic
Compliment: play with with prints and bold colors
3.Rock it With Confidence
Just DO YOU!
What does sneakHER culture mean to you?
TB: To me it means that us women can also be sneakerheads and have a voice even bigger than men! We have our own unique style and can be whoever you want to be while rocking a sneaker.
TS: Women who can rock heels but prefer a sneak. Women who shift the narrative. It’s a place of acceptance and it’s a guaranteed seat at the table.
