Inspiring Ladies on their 2020 Resolutions & Goals

Bring on the New Year

Ever come across somebody and think “dang, she seems cool”? Well that’s us and these three women—trailblazers across art, fashion, and food—so we tapped them to share their approach to 2020, talking creativity, recalibration, hustle, and that #momlife.

Meet Elise

She’s illustrating children’s books. She’s asking moms our burning questions on her new Cool Moms podcast. She’s designing a sustainable kids' shoe line. She’s starring in Mara Hoffman campaigns (while pregnant, natch). She’s momming her adorable son Sargent and putting down roots in L.A. after a recent move from NYC. Elise Peterson is doing the dang thing—day in, day out—a modern renaissance woman, diversified in her pursuits and always keeping an open mind as to where else her creativity could take her.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE BREADTH OF YOUR WORK?
Part of my purpose is to explore and share a limitless practice in storytelling. And storytelling has allowed me to be a conduit for community. So you could say I’m a community organizer by way of storytelling.

HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVELY MOTIVATED?
I don’t always! Sometimes that sweet spot of creativity and productivity comes with ease. Other times, I can’t find any motivation. I try to be easy on myself and know that I am inherently creative and the motivation will return.

WHAT IS ONE NON-WORK HOBBY THAT BRINGS YOU JOY?
Anything outdoors. I love hiking and more adventurous stuff like rafting.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU DO DAILY THAT MAKES LIFE SWEETER?
Dancing, praying, and reading to Sargent.

AS A MOM, WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR YOUR CHILD IN 2020?
To love and feel loved.

WHAT ROLES HAVE OTHER MOMS PLAYED IN YOUR LIFE?
Sargent is truly a tribe baby. Being away from my family on the east coast has me challenging the way I define family. Even the warm response from my Cool Moms community has been tremendously uplifting. There is limitless inspiration in mothers who prioritize their purpose outside of motherhood—sometimes it’s really messy and complicated—but they push through. That visual is invaluable to me.

WHAT ARE YOU PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON FOR 2020?
I’m deeply focused on my mental and spiritual health. Deepening my connection with myself, my son, and my partner.

MEET EMILY

Emily Vartanian is the best friend you maybe didn’t know you needed. Cool, down-to-earth, with a closet you’re gonna raid every time you hang. The mom-to-be (edit: brand-new mama) is an og blogger. She’s been at it since 2011, covering fashion and beauty on Stiletto Beats, with a tone of sharing secrets that’s insider-y yet relatable. For her, 2020 is the year of the new baby, and she’s more than here for it.

HOW DID YOU CONQUER THE UNCERTAINTY OF STARTING YOUR OWN THING?
I'm pretty analytical and number-based so I gave myself a goal of how much money I needed to make before I quit my full-time job. Once I hit that number I jumped in with no fear!

HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVELY MOTIVATED?
I love getting lost on Pinterest. It's actually my favorite social-media platform because it doesn't focus on the person but rather the content & images. I always feel so inspired after a good Pin session.

HOW DO YOU PRIORITIZE YOU?
I give myself at least one day off a week and don't use my phone when the hubby comes home from work.

WHAT'S THE ONE NON-WORK ACTIVITY THAT BRINGS YOU JOY?
Secretly...baking! I don't share it much on socials but I love to bake...mostly because I loveee cookies and desserts. The go-to is this copycat Levain Bakery recipe. It's so easy and the cookies are so big and delicious!

YOU'RE ALMOST A MOM! HOW DO YOU PLAN TO FIND BALANCE?
I'm going to take it day by day! Easier said than done, and I know motherhood is such a wild journey. My husband will also be there to check me when things get tough!

WHAT'S THE GO-TO LOOK WHEN YOU HAVE 0 TIME FOR DECISIONS?
Depends on the season, but for winter: a maxi dress, boots, and a cozy coat! Chic and easy.

MEET JESSICA

Woman gets laid off. Woman turns passion-project side hustle into the beginnings of an empire, starting with an obsessed-over jam line and a couple jam-packed L.A eateries: brekkie hotspot Sqirl and L.A.-meets-Mexico City hotspot Onda, inside the new Proper Hotel. Jessica Koslow is busy af, constantly in-demand, and endlessly entrepreneurial, yet her pooch is her bestie and sweats and classic sneaks are life. Our kind of gal.

WHERE'S YOUR HEAD AT FOR 2020?
My 2020 word is focus. I want to focus on the things that really matter, so the stuff that is priority stays priority, and the junk doesn't get in the way.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO START THEIR OWN THING?
Just take one small step forward. Everything is built step by step, brick by brick.

HOW DO YOU PRIORITIZE YOU?
Oh, you know—I click on a button to go to a fitness class in the morning! Working out and staying healthy is important to me.

WHAT'S SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I grew up figure skating and was a national champion in 1999.

WHAT'S THE GO-TO LOOK WHEN YOU HAVE 0 TIME FOR DECISIONS?
Sweatpants and a sweatshirt and either Vans or Nikes! But, my 2020 resolution is to not wear sweatpants unless I’m going to the gym...though this was also my 2018 resolution, but then my 2019 resolution was “f— that, wear sweatpants.” So we’ll see what happens.

WHAT DOES YOUR ULTIMATE COZY NIGHT IN LOOK LIKE?
Lots of popcorn, a glass of wine, and watching some ridiculous show that can be background noise because I’m also catching up on emails. Oh, and of course, curling up with my one-and-only-dog Munk.
