Masai Mara Safari, Africa
Located in the southwest of Africa, Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s flagship safari park. Sightings of the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo) are pretty much guaranteed especially during the dry season. From July to October, over two million animals cross from Tanzania to Kenya during the Great Migration. When preparing for an African Safari you must consider the wildlife, desert heat, dramatic temperature changes, and certain luggage restrictions traveling between sites.
Stay neutral to avoid the heat, predators, and bugs
Temperatures can get very hot on safari; wear lightweight breathable clothing made with quick-dry fabrics. Pants that convert into shorts are a versatile item to pack. Stick with neutral colors (not white) to stay cool and to blend in with nature. Avoid dark blue/black which attracts tsetse flies and red which attracts predatory animals.
Things can get a little toasty on a long safari walk
Safari walks take you up close and personal to wildlife; stay comfortable on these long walks by wearing hiking shoes with ventilation. Protect yourself from the beaming sun with a full coverage sun hat with UPF as well as a pair of sunglasses to avoid getting a headache from the glare.
Quick dry undergarments to get you through the day
With limited access to cleaning services on your trip, the ability to wash and quickly dry your items comes in handy. Pack quick-dry undergarments that you can easily wash in your sink. We suggest you opt for quick-dry sports bras which will provide more support on those bumpy safari rides.
Cover up and layer up when the temperature drops
Don’t let the daytime heat fool you, the temperature can drop pretty significantly in the early morning and late evening. Pack a sweater and a light jacket to layer, especially if you have plans to go on a night drive safari.
Travel light to avoid leaving your luggage behind
Going on safari usually means traveling between multiple destinations, so travel light! Small planes that connect safari destinations may have luggage limitations as light as 32lbs. Safari vehicles are often tight as well so to avoid having to leave your luggage behind and pack a lightweight duffle or backpack.
