#StyledByMyKid: With Katie Hintz-Zambrano of Mother Mag & 5-Year-Old Diego

For our new series, #StyledByMyKid, we're flipping the script and—gulp—handing over control to the kids. We're letting them dress you—their parents!—and simultaneously discovering what they really think of your personal style.

First up in this fashion trust-fall exercise is San Francisco-based Katie Hintz-Zambrano, who runs the website Mother, devoted to all facets of the motherhood experience, and is the founder of In Good Company, an annual conference for creative women entrepreneurs. Diego, her five-year-old son (and now stylist), was tasked with picking out outfits for Katie for three different activities: the morning school run, a weekend playdate, and a date night with dad. And though he embraced the assignment with gusto, “I was alarmed by the amount of black he chose,” jokes Katie. See what other surprises Diego had in store for his mama, with picks that revealed a love of sparkle, sports, and yes, the color black.

Look 1: The Morning School Run

How did Diego approach this look?
“When I walk him to the school bus we generally have about 20 minutes from when he wakes up to getting out the door, so it’s a pretty rushed time. I steered him towards the jumpsuits, and he went straight for the black ones. Taking into consideration that his favorite things are Batman and Black Panther, it probably makes sense in hindsight. It’s also usually pretty cold out in the morning so I had him pick a jacket, and again, he wanted all-black. Luckily, he saw an olive green one that he liked a lot, so he conceded to a little color.”

What about footwear?
“He liked the blue sneakers because they almost match the ones he has, and the flash of gold on the sides really sold it. Generally, anything sparkly on my feet was A-okay with Diego.”

"It was fun picking outfits for my mom! I wish I could dress my mom every day."
5-year-old Diego

Katie’s style vs Diego’s picks…
“With the jumpsuit, I slipped it on and it was surprisingly comfy. I didn’t take it off for the rest of the day. That piece is something I think I’ll definitely wear again, but probably wouldn’t have picked out for myself.”

Look 2: Weekend Park Playdate

How did Diego approach this look?
“Diego is super into soccer right now and he’s been watching more professional sports. Because pro sports these days are pretty brand-centric and logo-forward, he really loved all the stuff that to him looks sporty, like the Adidas sweatshirt he chose. Again, black of course.”

What about footwear?
“He loved these glitter shoes. In general, he loves shiny things, metallic, and the idea of gold and silver, which are exciting for most kids. I’ve always been big into not dulling that for him just because he’s a boy, so it’s basically a question of how much sparkle can he get on one shoe?”

Katie’s style vs Diego’s picks…
“I realized this look was a reflection of him thinking his dad is cool, since his dad is really sporty. For Diego, it was about bringing more sportswear into my looks, which I generally don’t gravitate to, but felt pretty comfy in.”

Look 3: Date Night Out With Dad

How did Diego approach this look?
“For this one he definitely wanted to dress it up a lot. I think he heard ‘date night’ and thought fancy. I do love dresses and wear them all the time though, so that’s where he took it. He initially picked out dresses that had really high slits, lots of keyhole cutout details and things, and he definitely wanted black or a dark blue. The one he finally chose is a body-hugging jersey piece.”

Looks like Diego did some accessorizing…
“His favorite thing out of all the pieces was the beetle necklace. As soon as he saw that necklace on the site, he was like, 'Yes!' He just thinks it’s really precious and special. As soon as he got home from school he would ask if he could wear it and he’d have it on all night until he went to bed. Then he’d carefully place it down and then put it on again the next morning until he had to go to school. It’s definitely something he stole from me right away.”

"My favorite is definitely the beetle necklace."
5-year-old Diego

What about footwear?
“He loved the Katy Perry stiletto heels and basically squealed when they arrived in the mail. He couldn’t believe that he had ordered them and the next day they were in his hands. He ran and showed his dad saying, 'Look at these shoes and all the jewels!'"

Katie’s style vs Diego’s picks…
“For one, I don’t have too many date nights these days, and I love the idea of treating yourself to a date-night outfit. That being said, when I do go out I’m not typically wearing anything super sexy and body -hugging since San Francisco is also a pretty casual city. This is definitely much more dressed up given that it’s black and dramatic and long, not to mention paired with a stiletto. I’ve never worn anything like that for a date night, but definitely might for a holiday party or a wedding. As for the necklace, I would say I’m a pretty un-accessorized person, so it works out that Diego has claimed that for himself.”
