The Lowdown On Detox Water

With 65 percent of our bodies made up of water, it's no mystery that we can’t live without it.

In fact, science has proven that in the harshest of conditions, humans can only survive three days without H2O. (Side note: You can survive three weeks without food, but it won’t be pretty.)

These facts are astonishing, but what’s even more alarming is that you probably know at least two individuals who either don’t drink water at all or don’t drink nearly enough. How much is enough? It depends on whom you ask, really. Many health professionals suggest eight 8-ounce glasses per day. Others say that number depends on your health, exercise habits and how hot and dry your climate is.

Regardless how much (or little) you drink, I think we can all agree water’s bland taste can get boring. And fast. Now, I know we’ve all seen those fancy water bottles with fruit compartments or cartridges to enhance water flavor, but what are the benefits to pumping your water full of oranges or lemons?

Commonly known as detox water, these additions can produce an array of advantages and pleasing results. So what is detox water? Simply put, it’s any infused water recipe that helps flush your system of toxins and improves your health. Most people drink it as a way to lose weight by boosting their metabolism and increase vitamin and nutrient intake.

Before looking at different water-cocktail options, let’s first analyze the benefits of some popular items individually.

1. Lemons

Acidic in flavor, lemons have been used for decades for curing a cough to seasoning chicken. So how does it play a part in water? Lemon is a great immune booster and helps the body better absorb vitamins, many of which we get from the food we eat. Lemon also aids in digestion and increases Vitamin C levels, which are great for the skin.

2. Oranges

Oranges have many of the same health benefits as lemons but provide a much sweeter, tangier taste. It’s also great for lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels and diminishing the likelihood of kidney disease and kidney stones. And if you need that much-needed energy boost, consider peeling, squeezing and sipping this all-natural carbohydrate. Orange you glad I told you this?

3. Cucumbers

Made up of mostly water, this “superfood” is the perfect component to your daily detox! Among its many health benefits, cucumbers are low in calories, high in fiber and are a great source of vitamin B. Cucumber water can also help soothe your skin from the inside out. So if you’re looking for ways to keep that skin healthy and beautiful, this may be for you!

4. Mint Leaves

A personal favorite, I love the refreshing taste of mint-infused water. Mint is used to help cleanse the palette, offers great tummy benefits and has a high antioxidant content. Remember when your mom would fix you peppermint tea when you had an upset stomach? Same idea. It’s also great to help banish allergy symptoms. Plus, you keep bloating at bay with this little flavor secret.

I could go on; ginger, apples, cinnamon, strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, lavender and grapefruit just to name a few. All of these are fantastic options for a detox water recipe. Each is packed with their mighty benefits that, when combined with water, flow through our bodies to keep us healthy.

If you’re not a big water drinker, this is an excellent way to get started. If you’re a pro, get creative with your detox blends. What’s your go-to mix? Lemons, strawberries and mint, or apples and cinnamon sticks? Whatever your flavor, these concoctions can be easily made in any water bottle or glass. So step into summer with a happier, healthier and slimmer you. You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain!
