Portland, Oregon is one of the most well-known, visited destinations in the Pacific Northwest - and probably the “hippest” city in the U.S. What makes Portland hipster central? The city is known for its coffee shop culture, great restaurants, festivals, outdoor concerts, and its eco-conscious lifestyle. It’s a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts, but be aware that temperatures fluctuate between the city and the mountains. Mornings will be foggy with temperatures tapering from the 70’s down to the 50’s in the evenings.
Pack the Right Stuff for Your Trip to Oregon
The city is cool, but it’s cooler in the mountains - literally
Hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy the fall foliage in Portland. Be prepared for much cooler temperatures in the mountains compared to the city. Layer activewear pieces with a windbreaker and pack a beanie and scarf to stay warm and comfortable.
Leave nothing but footprints
The hiking trails will be slick from the rain and some trails can be quite bare and rocky. Here are a few great hiking shoe options, some of which also happen to be eco-friendly as well!
Wear your hiking boots on the plane or pack them in the bottom of your bag, then stuff small soft items such as socks, underwear etc. inside your boots to maximize space.
Rain, rain, doesn’t go away
Portland experiences rain year round, but more so in the fall. Carry a lightweight raincoat at all times when visiting Portland - bonus points if it’s made from recycled or eco-friendly materials.
I just moved to Portland and needed something for the rain. This is lightweight, perfect for the rainy days. I can wear it to work or out on the trails.
A daypack for everything the day will throw at you
