I love these shoes! I had 3 pairs of the black and salmon Brethos before these. They didn't last very long, but lived a very hard life running 30 km a week though the jungle in Bali, so I always felt I got my money's worth. The traction they provide in wet, slippery, muddy conditions is awesome! The black and salmon Bretho is hard to find now (somehow different colors seem to fit differently) so I went for the Trail Freak. Love the color, and the name! The toe box is wider than the Bretho! and the way they lace up is a huge improvement. I will run the Rinjani Ultra in them, and am sure they will be great!

So far I love these! I wore Vibram Fivefingers for a long time (and still do) but I wanted something with a little bit more tread for hiking (if it was muddy or rocky I tended to slip - Fivefingers have a lot more models nowadays but when I used to take my old ones hiking they had a very smooth sole). These are really comfortable, not quite as minimalist as I was used to but pretty much exactly what I was looking for for light hiking and walks on dirt. At first they seemed a bit stiffer than I thought minimalist shoes should be but then I remembered that Vivos (at least these ones) have that optional insole, and although it was comfy with, once I took them out they were even better. My toes had room to splay and I felt very in control of my foot. These will be the most substantial shoes I own since I really don't like the feel of being constrained, but will be a great compromise considering the kind of support and traction I was looking for for hiking. I have also bought the Synthetic Hiker for longer hikes, and look forward to comparing them. I will say that the fit and sizing of Vivos has been inconsistent with my feet - I have sent back or exchanged for a different size 3 other models due to this. I'm not sure if it just varies by the type of shoe (sneaker, flat, athletic, etc.) but these ones in particular were true to size for me and fit great right out of the box.

I'd also recommend: Vibram Fivefingers, Inov-8, Merrell

Runs small & narrow. I returned the first pair for a bigger size. Still a little narrow, but otherwise good.

My recommendation: get this shoe for casual wear but not for exercise. I own and love many pair of Vivobarefoot casual shoes, but this was my first trail/athletic style which I purchased for walking on rough, country asphalt roads. The Trail Freak is a disappointment as an athletic shoe for me. The tread on these shoes is much stiffer than the thinner Vivobarefoot styles, though it has loosened up a little with the break-in period, but the soles still feel stiff and make my feet work against them. I added gel liners underneath the soles, but the cushioning is still not enough for walking for exercise beyond about 2 miles. As a basis for comparison, I've been walking in softer, thin-soled Teva shoes (that style now discontinued) for about 2 years, around 3 miles per walk, and I was hoping the Vivobarefoot Trail Freak would add a little more resilience against the roads, but they don't. My feet tire quickly with the Trail Freak. So, I switched to a padded Altra, zero-drop style "Intuition" and am very happy with it now for walking for exercise. I am still wearing the Trail Freak around town as a casual shoe, where it works great. As I was shopping, several store personnel told me the minimalist trend is declining because too many people are getting injured with shoes that don't offer padding during exercise. I see plenty of reviews from people who love the minimalist shoe experience and emphasize that proprioception technique is what makes minimalist shoes work, but most of those are runners. I'm a walker, and for now, I am loving the Altra brand for walking.

I'd also recommend: Altra

The jury is still out on these shoes. I am a complete convert to the barefoot concept, and these are pretty comfortable. But I want to use them for hiking, and they could use just a bit more padding. Not the perfect fit, but the best I have found yet for my female 11N feet! I would prefer "real" shoestrings and will probably cut these off and replace with real ones.
