I was thrilled to find this mixer at a good price, but was distressed to find it did not live up to my expectations. I have had a KitchenAid Artisan for a few years, and it was okay to begin with; I actually like the basic better. However, the Artisan seemed to be wearing out fairly fast, and there is a cookie recipe my family loves whose somewhat stiff dough was a challenge for my KA’s 325-watt motor. While having seen mixed reviews elsewhere of this item (no pun intended), I was hopeful that the 800 watt motor would kick cookie dough b*tt the way one would think a motor with over twice my current wattage would. (It is apparently difficult to review mixers without unintentional plays on words.) Alas, no such luck. While at times the power seemed sufficient, there were other times that it labored and whined while attempting to subdue the glob of refined sugar, white flour, and other toxic elements. I will say, when I mixed something with little to no resistance, e.g. chocolate frosting, it beat any other mixer I have ever used. (See? It’s happening again.) While the general appearance and style is quite nice, the bowl handle sticks straight out from the front, which can make for awkward handling. If it had been everything I had expected, it still would have been a splurge for my budget, but worthwhile.

The mixer works perfectly and handles a heavy load without issues, and it looks handsome on my counter. I give 4 stars because a knob (the little one on the top right that opens up the housing for repair) fell off just getting the mixer out of the package. I couldnt exchange it because I couldn\'t get it back in the complicated and tight packaging. Seriously, no one could get it back in this package! I sort of jammed it back on and I will order a new knob as a replacement. If you order this mixer or anything that is packaged to the hilt, take pictures as you excavate your purchase so you can get it back together again.

I purchased this somewhere else a year ago. After 3 days I called and returned. It looks so nice. The red was gorgeous. It seemed sleek and stylish. If only it ran as great as it looked. It was like meeting the hot guy with the great abs on the beach - all is great until he starts to speak and you realize no abs can cover up for a complete dolt! The slow start-up was fine but the noise was incredible. We do not have a quiet house and this was really loud even to us. Not worth the money - didn't mix that great.
Brands I'd also recommend: Breville, KitchenAid

Bought this mixer over Christmas, right after my KA melted a gear. I don't use it a lot but when I have used it, it's had plenty of power. Hasn't really let me down. However, I do wish it would do a better job getting to the bottom of the mixing bowl. As far as the overall design, it's a quarter of an inch from the bottom of the bowl from being just about perfect.

This unit gets an A+ for power. It even breezed through my bagel dough. I like a low hydration bagel dough which is extraordinarily tough and the Viking was not phased by it. My KA Pro600 always smells and feels hot after a session with bagel dough. The tilt top latches in place with a hook over bar mechanism. Very sturdy, but does not provide for a close tolerance when hooked in place. There is a bit of play which allows for a gap between the beater or dough hook and bottom of the bowl. Frankly that is a bit annoying to find some dry unmixed ingredients at the bottom of the bowl. You can involve all the ingredients by exerting some downward pressure on the tilt head but design could be improved here. The dough hook is pretty average for this size mixer. It does not do a great job of pushing the dough down during mixing, dough tends to ball up and stay on the hook. A few scrape downs during kneading takes care of this. In fairness, good dough hook functionality tends to start at 6 qt capacity and above so not really apples to apples comparison to my KA. I like the turn knob for on/off/power adjustment settings better than the slide bar on KA. Overall design is fine and I am glad to have it. Knowing what I do now I would buy it again.

My husband bought me the Viking 5Qt stand mixer for Christmas as I do a lot of baking. I can not begin to tell you how Wonderful this mixer is! I have used it just about every day for making breads to pie doughs, cookies etc. And with Zappos' next day shipping it was even better. I did not have to wait until Christmas. I used it Christmas Day to whip my sweet potatoes and do my pie crust. I love it! The red is a beautiful color! My husband thinks it is an awesome power tool for the kitchen!

I had the Kitchen Aid 600 for about 10 years and loved it. When it got old it would overheat, wobble, struggle, etc. Reading the Kitchen Aid reviews made me decide not to get a new one. The Viking got great reviews. It is a very nice, powerful, stable mixer. I love it! The only thing it cannot do is mix in the chocolate chips into a double batch of cookie dough. Other than that it powers through bread dough and cookie dough without a problem.
